- 25 years ago, Antony Beevor wrote the definitive account of the Battle of Stalingrad, a formative moment in the forging of modern Russian identity.
The book won multiple international awards and soon became a million-copy bestseller.
Now, Beevor turns his attention to the birth of the Soviet Union itself, with an in-depth look at the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the five years of conflict that followed it.
Using the most up to date scholarship and archival research, he weaves a compelling and complex narrative, telling the story through the eyes of everyone from the worker on the streets of Petrograd to the cavalry officer on the battlefield and the woman doctor in an improvised hospital.
This event is chaired by multi award winning presenter and the BBC’s Chief News Correspondent, Clive Myrie. In a career spanning more than 30 years he’s been the Corporation’s Africa, Asia, Europe and Washington Correspondent. He’s reported from more than 90 countries around the world and last year led the BBC’s coverage of the war in Ukraine, reporting live on the day of Russia’s invasion.
Met Beevor at Cheltenham Literature Festival in 2023……erudite and urbane…..completely first class
Fantastic discussion and questions. He filled in many gaps in understanding more completely. Thanks.
Fascinating. Love Beevor's books.
Thank you for keeping up with the bloody Russian history. Many interesting facts were revealed here.
Brilliant!
Did you hear the one about two men chained to a log....the first one asked "what are you in for?" ....Nobel prize for Literature.
Excellent
What a "branchy cranberry tree" 🥱
No library’s left
Putin is an extraordinary combination of things... Orthodox (or eastern Christian as he now self describes), ex KGB (he controlled a cell of the Bader Meinhoff in Berlin), a lover of Imperialist icons (He's just nicked Potemkins remains from Kherson to keep them 'safe)... and amateur historian. he has some quirky ideas about molotov/ribbentrop pact for example... seeming to ignore everything except page 1.
Would be better with Beevor alone--he's wonderful!
Clive line of questioning is so boring - constantly trying to bring comparisons or lessons for the present
yes, imagine trying to draw lessons from history, such an unorthodox approach
Funny. Telling a story about politically inspired lies to someone from the BBC. Nice
It's not KEEVE. IT is Kieff.

mmm Mr Beevor...I can´t wait for your 10 volume book on British genocide in India ....I will be so delightful to check how much you know about it and all the different perspectives you can give us on the matter I am sure you are the worlwide leader.....mmmmm
It would be more enlightening to study the Hindu caste system than to tilt at that particular false windmill.
Any books you can recommend on this topic?
Is it just me or can anyone else feel the dishonesty dripping from every word Beevor stammers out?
It’s you
Maybe we should form our opinions about the UK , Belgium and Germany from the Indians, Congolese and Namibians .

Neither of these propagandists can be trusted on this subject.
