Canvas printing on the Epson XP-15000 printer. Using A3+ sheet canvas for an A4 stretched print

  • Keith Cooper looks at using canvas for printing, with the Epson XP-15000 A3+ printer. The canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher. Using the free Epson Print Layout software, a photo can be printed with the right border for covering the side of the stretcher, for a 'gallery wrap' style.

    • @KeithCooper

      No different from a matte art paper - the important bit is that the canvas needs to be an inkjet usable canvas.
      Economic?

    what is the purpose of the extra 4mm of overlap and where does this happen? Does it extend the actual print by 4mm to wrap around the edge, then the mirrored image appears?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's just to extend the overall printed areas a little bit beyond what is set with the border size. In the past I've ended up with a thin white edge where the print folds over underneath.
      If you look at the example, you can see how it expands just a bit beyond the (optional) cut marks.
      If you want the main print area a bit bigger you can specify a custom canvas size slightly larger

      I don't do canvas very often, but when I do i use a gloss canvas (on a bigger printer).

    Ty for the video. Do you have to turn on the thick paper setting in the printer settings? On the control panel? Or it doesn’t matter? I bought Epson radiant white watercolor paper 13 x 19 and was wondering the same thing….do I need to turn on thick paper setting? Thx again 😊

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If the media selected is a thicker one then it should be automatic. If I needed to I'd likely select it in the settings.
      Where the 'thicker' setting is useful is, for example, you use the glossy photo paper setting for a thick baryta paper [or canvas]. So the actual paper is thicker than the chosen media setting would set for the printer.
      I'm going from memory and other printers here, since it was some time ago that I tested the 15000...

    • @KeithCooper

      It shouldn't touch the head, otherwise it would smear. You have to use a thick media setting.

    Question: Lets say I bought a roll of canvas with the intention to cut it to size as needed, and soon realized that the curl of the roll I have is going to make feeding it a pain, how would you flatten the sheet out for printing? • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've long done testing of new equipment/software for several manufacturers (over 15 years). That means that some of the software I use is not publicly available versions - it also means I do not have a license to distribute profiles commercially. However I've been told that passing them on for personal research/use is OK.
      There is also my personal feeling that if someone wants to use a profile in their business, and make money from it, they should pay someone to create it for them.

    Hey Keith got the Epson xp-15000 as a gift. I’m guessing it’s better to print with ones computer vs cellphone? My main question is about canvas printing. You recommend a3+ 13x19 canvas and an a4 stretcher I wonder what size is the stretcher? Love the video

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From my POV, there is no good use for a phone in this process - the screen and printing isn't colour managed and there is no way of adequately editing images.
      The reason I use A3+ canvas is purely because I have a box of the stuff ;-) Normally I'd print canvas from a 24"/36" or 44" roll, but obviously not with the XP-15000!
      For A3+ (13" x 19") it just happens to fit nicely over the A4 stretcher I have sitting around (it's A4 size).

I would like to have a color printer for printing gift cards on heavy papers that I send to my customers when I ship their online purchases. I am not using so much at the beginning of my business so inkjet or ink tank doesn’t really matter. And I also prefer to be able to print my professional photos as well of course on A3 or smaller sizes. I also have a budget limit and that’s max 350 €. Thank you.

      Thanks
      I'm afraid I don't follow prices, here in the UK, yet alone overseas. But... More to the point, what do you actually mean by 'professional photos' - are these prints for sale?
      It's a term with a vast range of marketing interpretation ;-)
      I wouldn't sell my pictures other than using pigment inks - but that's because I want them to be reassuringly expensive as much as anything else ;-)
      Pick a printer like the xp-15000 for gift cards but it's not one I'd associate with prints I'd sell though - YMMV
      Prints to sell - spend more! ;-) :-)

      @@KeithCooper Thank you for your reply. I actually meant both prints for sale but also my private photos that I take with my Nikon DSLR camera. And for printing thank you cards on thicker papers like 300 grams, you recommend the xp-15000. Thank you @ keithcooper

      Nope - it's HP Artist Matte Canvas 380.
      HP sent me stacks of the stuff 12-15 years ago for a printer review [z3200]

      @@xeroglitches3474 A colour management issue - the right way is to have a profile for the canvas, and that the monitor is not too bright (it can be calibrated, but still too bright)
      Without a profile, it's making an adjustment before printing - a curve in Photoshop for example. That said without knowing ALL the software and system used there are lots of possible answers.

      It's HP Artist Matte canvas.
      It's used here purely because I have several boxes of the stuff ;-)
      If I wanted to use canvas for the 15000 I'd prefer a satin/semi-gloss finish, but I only have that on a 44" width roll...

      @@KeithCooper excuse me Keith, did you cut the sheet off the roll to size? Or can you buy pre-cut A3+ size canvas? I am having trouble finding it pre-cut to size, only seeing rolls for sale. I guess it wouldn't be difficult to cut from the roll. I just purchased this printer to make small diamond art pictures for myself. Thank you for your video, was very informative.

      Do you mean canvas or paper - the two are very different things?
      The one I'm using here is a matte finish canvas - several UK paper suppliers list inkjet compatible canvas.
      www.permajet.com/product-category/inkjet-canvas-accessories/
      The one here is an HP branded one - no idea where it's from, I just happen to have several boxes of it (from years ago) and this testing is just a 'can it be done' experiment

    Hi. Can any inkjet printer work for canvas?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends a lot of the printer media feed and good results depend on the ink type as well.
      I've tested quite a lot more 'better' printers than this, but rarely test cheaper (A4) ones.

    What is a profile and why is it needed?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Difficult to explain in a comment box...
      My simplest explanation (for a printer) is that it is a description of how the printer and a specific paper handles colours sent to it to print and just what colours it is capable of reproducing. Using a profile helps make a good correspondence between the image on your computer and what comes out as a print. Different papers take ink in different ways (gloss/matte for example) so a mechanism is needed for handling this.
      Profiles are used all over the place (monitors, cameras, scanners) - mostly you don't see them or even need to know what they do.
      I have some ideas to cover aspects of this in some videos at some point...

    Hello Keith,
    Can I get your email so I may ask you some questions about setting up for printing on canvas, please? I do not want it for commercial use. I lost my 16 yr old son a couple months ago and want to make my other three sons (his brothers) photos of him on canvas, myself, so they are personal. I'm going to give them, them for Christmas. I purchased rolled canvas and have zero idea what I am doing. I have the exact same printer and was able to find that I could use it for printing on canvas, so I purchased the canvas completely blind. I wasn't able to find anything to assist me in picking the proper canvas or anything prior to ordering 36" X 40' of canvas. I do own a professional tabletop cutter like in schools. I purchased that while I was working full time, had the money, and was making my sons t-shirts using my cricut and vinyl. I truly hope you see this msg and respond to assist me. I am able to give you my email if preferred. I dont know how I could send a personal msg on here.
