    This is one worth doing an album reaction for. The album is so brilliant in a weird way. Its raw, stripped down. Such interesting concepts too. I am with you on being on the heavier side of music but this album opened my world. Its a cult classic.

    Those "synths" if I'm not mistaken are actually saws, like a hand saw being played with a bow. Also, never seen your stuff before, will definitely check out more, but you GOT to do the whole album here. It's a continuous experience. Every song plays beautifully into the next and it's probably my favorite album of all time to listen to front to back. With like Pink Floyd's "Animals" right behind it.

    I discovered this album while my grandpa in the hospital battling cancer… It was oddly comforting. It’s been a lot of years. It’s still one of my favorites of all time, but I can’t bear to listen to it. It’s ethereal and beautiful, yet unbearably painful.

    I picked up this album the day it came out, was already a fan from the first album. I worked at a gas station at the time and blasted this album (among many others) on a lil boombox behind the counter. MANY customers asked me what I was listening to when they were playing. It's so great to see someone connecting with this music a quarter century later. New sub here, cheers.

    This album means SO much to me, I'm glad you enjoyed this track. Jeff Mangum was/is an incredible lyricist and all NMH's songs feel so raw and emotionally resonant. If you like this album, listen to their first (On Avery Island) as well. Three Peaches really hits me hard, and Gardenhead is amazing as well.

    Nothing wrong with an emotional reaction to music. I had the same experience with this album. If you do ever get into the lyrics on this you might realise how close you got with the vibe you felt. For me it's one of the best written albums I've ever heard. The lyrics have such density and are so open to interpretation that I never get bored of it. Great reaction as usual 👌

    My ALL TIME favorite album. It is rewarding. They kinda disappeared for a long while. Then I got to see them live in Seattle in 2012 when they became active again. The whole crowd sang along to EVERY song. It was spectacularly beautiful. In a moment of silence between songs someone in the audience voiced out, "Where have you been? We needed you."

    • @WhatsUpFella
      @WhatsUpFella 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@NightwalkReal The album cover used to be posted a lot on sites like Reddit and 4chan and people would edit it into a bunch of silly images. There’s also a backstory to the album where the lead singer was inspired by the story of Anne Frank and there were all sorts of weird jokes made surrounding that. It’s kind of hard to explain. There’s a good video by a popular TH-camr named Whang! that goes over the history of its meme status. It’s worth a quick watch.

    • @henryfish
      @henryfish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@NightwalkReal the 4chan /mu/ board loves the album. At first sincerely, but over time more ironically? It's hard to gauge. The album is certainly beloved by indie people but there are elements of the album that, taken out of context, can seem ridiculous or over the top.

    I'm sorry that this song was painful for you but I'm also glad to see more people checking out Neutral Milk Hotel's brilliance.
    To me, the 'synths,' or the singing saws that they use actually remind me of moaning whales, always makes me cheery thinking of them flying around in the water, and how they chose to accompany this song.
    You are definitely right though, it's hard to find genuine music anymore that wasn't produced simply for fame or money, and NMH are the exact opposite of that, they were built from passion.
    If you have the chance, like I've seen a few other comments say, please, please, react to the rest of this album, it is a masterpiece.

    This song just hits like a truck. I just found the channel, so maybe you did, but if not, this whole album is incredible. I believe this song (as well as Holland 1945) is making reference to Anne Frank. Jeff Magnum read Diary of a Young Girl and in his own words "cried for three days" after. Many ghosts seem to haunt his mind and hers seems to be one.
    The crazy thing is that the chord progression for this song is basically a 50's doo wop tune.
