- This is our very first reaction video! We have decided to just tackle individual songs in the beginning stages of our channel, but we will be expanding to full album reactions and other music related content in the future.
We hope you can find something to enjoy in this first reaction video, where my dad gives his thoughts on this legendary track.

This album is extremely polarizing to so many people...
On the one hand, I think it is one of the greatest records of all time. On the other hand, everyone who disagrees is wrong.
Also I only have one hand.
"Vocalist is excellent." Lol I think that's the first time i've ever heard that. When my mother heard this, she said bewildered , "You call that a voice?" My favorite artist is Conor Oberst and people don't always love his voice either despite the fact that I love it.
There is a difference between a good sounding voice and one that has passion. Sometimes they combine, but rarely.
My wife hates Connor's voice though she can never tell me what she doesn't like about it.
conor always sounds like he’s about to break down sobbing. it’s one of my fav voices too
When I was younger, my dad would often sit upstairs with me while I did whatever and listened to music. One of the things he said that stuck with me one day as we were listening to Digital Ash... and Cassadaga is that he had "an honest voice". I liked that very much.
my dad said the same thing when i put on two headed boy
This boy respects and loves his father. Very nice to see.
Most kids love their parents. Out of all the things you got out of this video that's what you said? Lol
There are many people that don’t have close connections with their parents. You watched this and your first reaction was to laugh at someone?
@@aaronisacomedian Yes because you are superficial with low emotional intelligence to understand and pick up on it. Parents and children mostly all love each other but many don't necessarily like each other and want to spend quality time together. Many just tolerate each other. That takes work and chemistry. These two in the above video really enjoy each others company. Yes I would say that this is less common.
@@aaronisacomediandude is commenting about respect and love, and you found an issue lmfao that might say more about you than anyone else
We’re getting better fellas 👊🏻
"How strange it is to be anything at all" -- absolutely love that line as well!
My all time favorite lyric.
My 8 year old son knew every word to this song at the age of 4. Had to introduce my boys to the classics.
Update: he’s 11 now and he listens to rap but luckily he has good taste and his favorite was Kendrick, even before the beef.
🥺 That's so cute. I hope my boy loves this, too.
that's really wholesome
It will take about another 8 years before he begins to comprehend the lyrics 😂
thats proper parentship there
He can enjoy both! about 70% of what i listen to is rap but this album is in my top 5 of all time
The haunting sound throughout is a saw played with a bow.
Yep. I saw them do that live.
It’s a masterpiece. I urge you to listen it from start to finish. It needs to be heard that way. A truly astonishing album, with a heartbreaking narrative.
Funny Story.
I accidentally listened to the meme version of the album thinking it was the true version of it.
I literally cried in the meme version. Then listens to the real version I stil cried.
@@ehdb2757 which meme version lol😂 I gotta check that out
I'm gonna give it a listen I just bought the cd
@@manny4552what did you think? 😚
@@zoerose3478 I'm not sure... The title track is spectacular of course very melodic.. I guess I need more time to digest the rest
8:41 I think the instrument used leading up to and in the bridge is actually a saw! Neutral Milk Hotel really are geniuses
yep it's a singing saw i think it's played with a violin bow
it always reminded me of like...scary mechanical seagulls or something
Correct
@@margaritakmp this whole album feels like an indie band was transported to a navy ship during WW2
This band is incredible, please react to more of there music it’s the most magical, wonderful, melancholy experience!!
Thanks for the encouragement. We are definitely going to be doing a full album reaction in the near future.
*their
I cant wait for this full album reaction.
Their
Holland 1945. Oh comley two headed boy 1 and 2
This is the sweetest thing ever! What a great father-son bond.
Spotify introduced me to this song and I've been obsessed with the band ever since lmao
The instruments leading up to the bridge is a saw, I saw them play live at a haunted opera theater and they had their saws. We all cried lol
I wish i had a relationship with my father like that! Very sweet
Need a whole album reaction to this!!
It's coming!
@@frontroom yes full album reaction please! give the people what they want!!
@@frontroom still coming, huh?
@@frontroom please release this! Thank you
@@diskoebalo yes, don’t worry soon
Oh, this brought me immense joy. Instant subscribe! I love the haunting discordant sounds of that bridge myself. Sometimes I imagine a bunch of rusty mechanical pieces blowing through bare tree limbs like spooky wind chimes in that part…
Dude neutral milk hotel is some of the most Underrated music ever known to man. Holland 1945, oh comley. And so many more and the song they are reacting to.
Holland 1945 is one of the best songs of all tome
That ghostly sounding instrument is actually a saw played with a bow. It's very jug bandy.
Thanks for this! You have a new subscriber! It was incredibly wholesome. I started crying after awhile, I mean this song is just amazing... Loved your thoughts and inputs as well! Wish my father was still with me so that I could share a conversation like this with him :’) Good luck with the channel! All the best to you two!
Thanks very much! I’ve listened to the song several times since and it has grown on me even more - particularly the lyrics and how well they compliment the wonderful music. I think I know how you must feel. Wish I’d had the same opportunity with my own father many years ago. - Dad
I love the way you two speak to each other. And what a great song to share. I love this.
Your interpretation of the lyrics in the bridge just blew my mind
Thanks for watching Conner. We need to do more from the album for sure! - Kai's dad
When I showed my Dad ITAOTS he looked at me like I was playing sounds of cats screeching
Love NMH and how genuine you and your dad are. Please please keep having him react to songs never heard. Too many reactions are fake now. Good stuff brother
CAN THIS MAN please react to the whole album? I'd Love to see his reaction
Fantastic, very wholesome video! You should definitely listen to On Avery Island, the band’s other album. Jeff Mangum’s voice is just as amazing and the music is just so astounding. The album is definitely less accessible than In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, but it’s honestly worth a listen. I highly suggest it. Good luck on this new channel!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching :)
And great suggestion, I am hoping to show him it once we get a better setup where we can listen to albums in full! Stay tuned
I saw these guys perform back several years ago and they came back for an encore and played “Holland 1945” and it was so powerful
I’ve watched all of your uploads so far and I have to say what a beautiful father/son relationship you both have. I’m about to have a baby boy and I can only hope we have anything remotely similar to what you guys have. These videos are great to watch and in my opinion that’s purely down to the fact you both are obsessed with music. Keep it up guys. Big fan from London, UK
omg, i just found yall like a few weeks ago n have been watching your videos since and only now saw u did this song, its one of my all time favourites, just something abt it makes it so special
Love these sorts of videos. Kid shows their dad song. This made me happy. I'm happy for the relationship you have with your dad.
Thank you!
I saw them play this live and it was religious. Julian coming in with the saw and Scott coming in with the brass gave me shivers that I’ll never forget.
Oh Comely was another extremely moving standout.
Nice! Need to hear more of them for sure. (dad)
I don't think it's too late to react to the entire album 😉 Just listen to this track again with the others. It's an amazing album that should be heard in full! Kudos to dad for appreciating Jeff's vocals. I dare to say most people would think they're awful 😂 I love them 💁🏽♀️
Been watching your videos recently and decided to come back to the beginning of it all. My favorite Neutral milk Hotel is oh comely I could listen for hours
I love this song , its one of my favourites but what i really liked about this video is the relationship between the two men .Love and respect in both directions. As it should be.
There is an indie movie from 2001 called “The Safety of Objects.” There are quite a few well known actors in it including Glenn Close, Mary Kay Place, and Patricia Clarkson. There were two songs in the movie that just mesmerized me and they were performed by a band called Bullet. The soundtrack is non existent but back in 2001, I tracked down the band online and was able to buy a CD with the songs “Relapse” and “Paul’s Song” on it. “Paul’s Song” is my favorite and this song reminds me of it. The vocals especially. Anyhow… I have long since lost track of that CD as we moved into the digital age of streaming music. Now you can only find these songs on SoundCloud or TH-cam. What a long ramble to say that I finally realized what this song reminded me of!
I love this, you definitely earned a new subscriber!
Awesome, thank you!
Would love to see your dad’s reaction to Oh Comely! 🥺
Definitely. My favorite
I just stumbled on this channel yesterday and I am hooked! I am binge watching to catch up. Subscribed from Houston, Texas!!!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Awesome to see someone experiencing and appreciate it for the first time. Takes me back.
Please go back and do King of Carrot Flowers Pt 1 and Part 2! I would love to see his take on it! I remember jamming out to this vinyl with my friends back during freshmen year of college. So nostalgic.💕
I see you mainly stick to rap songs, but this is beautiful. I’ve always loved this song.
What an amazing video! I hope you start to maybe delve into album reactions too. Watching your dad listening to this entire masterpiece of an album and breaking it down would truly be a treat
Oh my gosh thank you for the kind words! I agree, he NEEDS to hear this album. Stay tuned for that cause it is coming!
This is the cutest thing I've seen all day
Favorite song ever.... Beautiful. I love your relationship. Respect
Wow, great video!
Glad you liked it!
I’ve been on this journey with you two from E. Badu to Tupac to this record and band that I was not familiar with. What a ride it has been. Thank you for letting us in.
Thanks for joining us on this journey, Taisha!
This album is one that needs to be listened to all the way through, since all the songs flow through each other and culminate on the last track!
full reaction would be so good, this is one of those albums where everytime I play a song from it I end up playing the whole thing
Great Video I love this. Im going to watch the Black Country Reaction right now.
Awesome! I'm glad you enjoyed it and thank you for your support
A full album reaction would be sick!
I think it will be coming at some point. Adore this song. Thanks for watching. - Kai’s dad
Excellent tune. That floor lamp in the background is magnificent!
I love this song. Great reaction... One word for you guys... RADIOHEAD
So after watching your reactions to Pac, Outkast I thought I better watch from the beginning because I am looking forward to all the upcoming reactions so I can follow you both on your reaction journey. Also I have never heard of this band so lessgooooo
Thanks for watching and for your enthusiasm! (dad)
That weird noise in the bridge is actually a singing saw! Same instrument as the 'wooooo'ing ghost noises heard throughout the track!
I’ve listened to the song several times since and the ghost noises have definitely grown on me: Dad.
The saw makes the song!
Listening to it again I can hear saws, too! How different is that!? And those mournful horns are sooo nice! - Dad
This reaction was amazing, such a good song, please do the full album soon
@8:50 - saws, literally playing a saw with a bow - Julian bass player also plays saw
i just love all, and not skip a single second in all the videos i was seeing, so many greetings from argentina
Glad you enjoy them! (dad)
Wholesome. Loved it :))
Thank you 😌glad you enjoyed
one of my favorite album of all time, subscribed
Thanks! Yes, for me too. An undeniable masterpiece, can't wait to show my dad the full record.
I was a teenager in the 90s, super into grunge and hip hop. I kinda rejected the entire 80s sound and found echoes of what I liked in older music from the 60s and 70s. There’s a deep connection there, and it’s cool to watch y’all vibe that. The first 15 seconds of this song could be off an old Dylan album.
You missed out on a decade of excellent music. Obviously not everything, but there's lots of great stuff from that era.
@@ijustneedmyself You mean the 80s?
@@DocRobert Yeah.
So you rejected morrisey? Souxie and the banshees? The cure? Echo and the bunnymen?
@@carlmarcks114 At the time, yeah. Baby with the bath water and all that. I wouldn’t have turned off any of those bands you named, but I wasn’t actively pursuing that sound. I loved the Cure song from the The Crow soundtrack.
In college I wasn’t trying to be cool or like… define myself by rejecting what people around me were listening to. So I heard all that with fresh ears. A decade later my favorite soundtrack was Donnie Darko and I was playing in an 80s cover band. Still a 90s teen in my heart, but I’ve filled in a lot of gaps with great music from every era. Life is change lol.
lol the fact this is your very first video, i subbed, love NMH. You guys really are growing fast!
Thanks for subbing!
@@frontroom Would love to see more NMH reactions
This album demands to be listened to front-to-back
I love your pops man.
Its the back of a flimsy wood saw played with a violin bow. Wrap your mind around that. ❤
So glad I found your channel! Now we’re getting to know dad a little. We just saw Frankie Valli in Orlando and I was the youngest one there at the age of 38 but it was a blast and he was amazing. I’ve seen other videos but I thought I should start at the beginning even though I’ve seen five or six already. Dad needs a channel , too!
Frankie Valli, cool! Thanks for tuning in. (dad)
god how i long for a connection with my father
I think the electronic part in the bridge that he was talking about is the musical saw. It's literally a guy using a violin bow on a saw that chops trees.
Thanks. Someone else pointed that out, too. An A+ for creativity!
@@frontroom I figured someone would have mentioned it. :) Glad your Dad liked it. NMH makes life better.
Inarticulateness is a key component of this video.
Some beautiful songs on this album
I would love to hear what made you guys start doing this together ❤️
This is such an incredible album
this song is so old from my college years.. it should be the dad introducing it to the son!
When it talks about fingers in the mouth it reminds me of how deaf people where taught to speak in the past. They would forcibly move their tongue and mouth to make them make sounds that are correct.
Thank you for this reaction.
Our pleasure, thanks for watching
Im 63 and have a huge record and cd collection.. I'm mostly a sixties and seventies guy too but i like most styles and decades and frankly ive just discovered this lp and song .. this song is really terrific..hes not a great vocalist but hes perfect for this song and its a strange song but quite melodic..its good ..ive got to learn more about this band
I'm jealous of your relationship with your father.
His dad and I both were captivated by the music loosing touch with lyrics to then barely catch the ending.
Oh Comely! To freshen up his perspective on this band given that it’s been multiple months. Also it’s my favorite track.
The noise In the back is a wood saw, being played with a violin bow.
pretty sure the instrument in the bridge you guys were talking about was a musical saw, but i could be wrong.
That funny sound is played on a saw, which you can hear playing melody earlier. (Sorry if this has already been covered)
thanks for putting me on 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I love the saw being played. I thought it was a theremin for a long time.
Liked an watched every video love guys keep goin
I love this song, and knew what the album was about, but I never understood the lyric about the finger in the mouth, so thanks for explaining that.
I remember liking a couple of songs at first, the rest of the album took me a couple of listens, but then I loved it. Enjoyed your reaction, you should check out The Beta Band - The Three E.P.'s album.
I don’t know if either of you are into him, but Andrew Bird’s “Pulaski at Night” is the most beautiful Sony I know of and I would love to see someone react to it.
Wow an original concept
love how real this is
I wish i could do this with my dad
I feel very fortunate to be able to do it with him. Thank you for watching and hope you enjoyed!
He should listen to Mykonos by Fleet Foxes
one day in 2009 my father saw the clip for mykonos in the mtv and was amazed by it
he listened to the band ever since, i may have heard it playing in the background but never cared about it
now, 2022, i consider fleet foxes one of my favorite bands
and yeah, he should DEFINITELY listen to mykonos in the channel
Thank you for the suggestion!
@@frontroom no worries! My own father likes Fleet Foxes, and I consided them to be a great band for music discussion between different generations of listeners. They have such a broad spectrum of musicality they pull from that all generations can find something appealing imo
@@apes4days254 Thanks for that. Definitely need to check them out.
i so badly wished you let it go into two headed boy lol. beautiful
Omg I wish I did too. "Two headed boyyyy, all floating in glass, the sun it has passed, now its blacker than black..."
One of my all-time favourite songs. We will do a full album reaction! Thanks for watching
The Greatest Album of the 90's.
That seems to be a strong sentiment among viewers!
When I first started buying vinyl I had only enough money to buy Doolittle by Pixies, or this album. Nearly had an aneurysm trying to choose.
Certainly in the top 5
So few bands have this magical feeling. Before NMH, not many bands have given me this feeling. Of course The Beatles would be the kings of the magical/fairytale vibe type of music. I’m constantly on the lookout for more of them. Please list some, of you see this comment.
Check out the Kinks: Get Back in the Line, Waterloo Sunset, for starters :) - Kai’s dad
@frontroom Thanks alot. Checking them out right away. 🏃♂️
@@frontroom Hey, you were SPOT on with the recommendation. Thank you. Feel free to list anymore that may come to mind.
This album is amazing!
I know right! Thanks for watching
Dad gets bonus points for Bob Dylan reference
the whole album is good. i love oh comely a lot and two head boy pt 2 the best
you need to listen to on avery island! it’s less cohesive than aeroplane but still amazing. their early early albums (like hype city soundtrack) are good too but more of an acquired taste.
This song was so refreshing, so alive with genuine feelings. Hoping to listen to all of their material at some point. Judging from this one song I’m pretty sure this is a band I need to know: Dad.
Your dad really should check whole album if he like it
Thanks for the insight into this new music form an old deadhead
The sounds are a violin bow playing on a tree saw while bending it 👍🏻
