Steven Tyler wrote this song when he was 16 and it never got played until Aerosmith needed a last song for the album that they were making so Steven said that he had written a song years earlier but he never really finished it completely so he and the band completed the song with less than a day and it has turned out to one of their greatest songs.
"Dream On" was first played live in Mansfield, Connecticut, at the Shaboo Inn.[6][unreliable source] In a 2011 interview, Tyler reminisced about his father, a Juilliard-trained musician. He recalled lying beneath his dad's piano as a three-year-old listening to him play classical music. "That's where I got that Dream On chordage", he said. Lyrical composition was completed when Steven was 14 years old.[7]
It's crazy how that happens. Sabbath's Paranoid was written because the band thought they needed one more song for the album. Then it goes on to become the title track and one of their biggest hits.
This is one of the greatest songs ever written. It is impossible for me to hear this song and not get an emotional response. Steven Tyler's voice sounded a little different in those early days.
Yes, well, over the years with all of the loud singing and the loud scream he sometimes does along with the abuse to the body that he used to do, it's changed his voice to not as clear, but rougher... but that's okay, it suits him too. : )
All that screaming changed his vocals. Same thing happens to all singers if you scratch your vocal cords like that. Worst is those whistles, like Mariah Carey. She's known for it ans now suffers from it.
My brother introduced me to Aerosmith in the summer of ‘77. He played this song over and over. In the fall of that year he took his life. This song and it’s words took on new meaning for me. Hands down my favourite band. This song and Amazing are my favourite
This was played at my brother's memorial. He was killed 10-08-1990 during Desert Shield. He was killed with 7 other men and they were never found. Today is Memorial Day and like most days, I am thinking of him and the others that died that day.
They played in my school gym when this came out in 1973. No stage, no light show, just under the basketball goal. I was so blown away that night that I see it like a video in my head.
My first concert was Aerosmith with Skid Row as the opening act. It was 1990 and I was 10 years old, went with my older sister and brother along with all of their "rocker" friends. Great experience.
What I love about this song is that it’s not monotonous. Lots of interesting chord changes, tempo changes, key changes. It’s a very musically complex song and he uses his voice as an instrument. The fact that he wrote this at age 17 snd had such musical maturity at that age is amazing. It’s one reason I don’t care for a lot of todays music cuz it’s over produced and is super predictable and not complex at all.
This off of their first LP. Their early stuff (1st 4 LP's) are clearly their best, before they became much more pop/commercial in the 80's. This is their biggest early hit (1973). I would go for Sweet Emotion next, as I see you already hit Walk This Way. Cheers!
This is classic rock at it's best. Seeing it in concert is at yet even another level. I was fortunate to meet Steven Tyler at backstage experience many years ago...it was only for a moment but let me tell you it was a moment I will never forget.

Aerosmith was the best band by far in their first decade. It would not be a waste of time for young folks to check them out. The Get Your Wings album is a great place to start. Great reaction.
The song starts off “every time that I look in the mirror, all these lines on my face getting clearer, and you hear the inhale. Next line is “the past is gone. Oh, it went by like dusk to dawn, isn’t that the way, everybody’s got their dues in life to pay”. The lines on his face is the coke on the mirror getting clearer as he is snorting them. He is watching time passing from dusk to dawn because of his coke habit and this is the due he is paying.
One of the greatest rock hits of all time, nobody anywhere would argue. This whole debut album is alwesome. Check out the old-school rock radio hit "One Way Street" from the same album. Such a groove! What a hell of a lsiten!
Seasons of wither, sick as a dog, back in the saddle for some early aerosmith, although dream on is also early in their career, grew up listening to em in the 70s,just a great band.
Aerosmith is crazy good, saw them at least a dozen times and the first time they had just released the debut album. Try Sweet Emotion, Train Kept a Rolling , Walk This Way and Living On the Edge. You mentioned time as part of what this song is all about, if you want to take a ride on the ultimate song about time and it's passing, try Pink Floyd's Time from the classic and best selling album, Dark Side of the Moon. It will change what you think about time and music, they are phenominal! Enjoy. 😎

Steven Tyler wrote this song as a teenager way before Aerosmith came long. I've seen some concert footage were Tyler is playing a white grand piano & Joe Perry is playing his guitar solo on top of the piano, so lit.
They are still performing. Although, they had a residency scheduled for the MGM in Las Vegas in May and June of this year it was cancelled due to COVID. I live outside of Vegas I was hoping to "maybe' get tickets. (They get expensive at the MGM - For nose bleed seats). They are supposed to reschedule. We shall see. I did get to see Garth Brooks this year though - at the new Allegiant stadium where the Raiders play and the sound system sucked. Parking was $100.00 - almost as much as two tickets - and they weren't then best seats - luckily I had seen Garth before in a much better setting with a better sound system.
The other Aerosmith song you probably heard sampled was walk this way, run dmc and Aerosmith did a remake of this old Aerosmith song in the late 80’s and someone on here said they made their comeback in the 90’s but it was mid to late 80’s
The whole first album has an edgy, garage-band feel. Guitarist Joe Perry didn't like the tone of the album. But I do. Saw them for the first of ten times right after Toys In The Attic came out in 1975 and the last time in 2001. No doubt Steven Tyler's voice underwent some changes in that time. He did not have an easy life, and it shows. But the early days were magical.
They severely resented MTV and having to put a “Cartoon” to their music. I actually like their 80s stuff along with early stuff. Don’t be fooled. They were not clean in the 80s. I’ve seen them more times than I can recall. They were not clean most of the time. Now in the 2000s. Yes. But Steven especially was very sporadic. I don’t think the songwriting suffered. A successful band adapts to current music trends. They made history with Run DMC. Even today in his 70s, Steven delivers every time with the band and solo.
Music, like Mathematics was discovered & NOT invented. Lady Asia, & Sir BJ, I'm so glad that you've listened to vast & magnificent music with an open mind.... Music, Art, & Mathematics are Universal....
The lines in the mirror, part if the song. Listen closely it is a sniffing sound. As in cocaine on the mirror. This is most definitely one Aerosmiths best. Check out their album Live Bootleg, it is a live mix of cover tunes and original songs. Possibly their best work recorded in my opinion(and many other people who lived in the 1970's).
Lyrical composition was completed when Steven was 14 years old.[7]
The most amazing thing about this song is that it was written when these guys were in their 20's. To have such insight as such an early age is amazing!
"All these lines and my face getting clearer" As you sniff the lines away, your face is clear in the mirror. Possibly in reference when the band decided the wanted to be clear and clean from drugs.
Lol, no. Nice stretch, though it could be a good double entendre for drugs. Steven Tyler wrote this song as a young teen, before Aerosmith was even thought of.
One more thing... Asia, you look extremely beautiful in this video. Not that you don't always look great, you just have that glow/it factor in this one. You & BJ are both blessed with great looks. Stay true, selfless and honest! ❤️🙏✌️🤘🏼
Lines on the mirror and my face getting clearer is about doing coke. The more lines you do the more clearer your face gets because the coke disappearing is making your reflecting more clear
Sweet Emotion is another great hit from Aerosmith. We did in the late 70s loved this band. Heard it from every car! Back then we could play our car music as loud as we wanted! Plus drink underage and cops would just put it in their trunks or have us pour it out. Then tell us to be good kids and leave. Good old days...😁
Vintage Aerosmith…..love this song as all Aerosmith fans do. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry wrote some gorgeous ballads. This one written at the piano by Steven - of course Joe Perry took the melody out for a spin with his guitar….and boom. ❤️🎼🤘😎
Aerosmith had so many great songs in the 70s. Back In The Saddle, Round and Round, Kings And Queens, and Last Child are a few that I think you guys might enjoy.
This song was actually released twice. First time it didn't get any recognition, but I remember hearing it once on the radio.
Steven Tyler wrote this song when he was 16 and it never got played until Aerosmith needed a last song for the album that they were making so Steven said that he had written a song years earlier but he never really finished it completely so he and the band completed the song with less than a day and it has turned out to one of their greatest songs.

Glad I found this Channel 👑👑💖💖💖💖♥️♥️♥️♥️ Love me some Aerosmith My Mom put me on She LOVES Him
Y'all on on the opposite side your usually on. Throwing me all off lol. One of the greatest songs ever. Thx for reacting.
This was very mature writing for such a young band
"Dream On" was first played live in Mansfield, Connecticut, at the Shaboo Inn.[6][unreliable source] In a 2011 interview, Tyler reminisced about his father, a Juilliard-trained musician. He recalled lying beneath his dad's piano as a three-year-old listening to him play classical music. "That's where I got that Dream On chordage", he said. Lyrical composition was completed when Steven was 14 years old.[7]
Great Reaction!!!! Love that Atlanta hat!!!!! Asia you are beautiful girl!!!!!🙌🏻🙌🏻❤️❤️
I love seeing young people get into the music I used to listen to when I was in my twenties
The most amazing thing about this song is that it was written when these guys were in their 20's. To have such insight as such an early age is amazing!
Tyler wrote it when he was 16
that makes it even more remarkable. Thank you for letting me know.@@dalefunk2457
Old Aerosmith is amazing! Kings and Queens, Last Child, so many great songs!!! Joe Perry is one of the GOATS on the guitar ❤️
Rocks is their best album in my opinion.
I always thought it to mean he’s getting older by that phrase ✌🏻💙🙏🏻
That's not it, but good try! He was 16 when he wrote this. This is a young rock star creating one of the best Rock tunes of all time!
This is the first time I've listened to this fully
One of my favorite concerts ❤️
One more thing... Asia, you look extremely beautiful in this video. Not that you don't always look great, you just have that glow/it factor in this one.
You & BJ are both blessed with great looks. Stay true, selfless and honest! ❤️🙏✌️🤘🏼
Lines on the mirror and my face getting clearer is about doing coke. The more lines you do the more clearer your face gets because the coke disappearing is making your reflecting more clear
50 YEARS OLD NOW YOU GUYS! 😊 AMAZINGGGGGGG!
Love y’all’s reactions,🔥🔥🔥
Sweet Emotion is another great hit from Aerosmith. We did in the late 70s loved this band. Heard it from every car! Back then we could play our car music as loud as we wanted! Plus drink underage and cops would just put it in their trunks or have us pour it out. Then tell us to be good kids and leave. Good old days...😁
"Seasons of wither" and "You see me crying" should be your next reactions to Aerosmith because they have the same mood of the 70's.
OMG YESSSSS!!!
From the album "Toys in the Attic.
Still have it.
From their first album not toys
Vintage Aerosmith…..love this song as all Aerosmith fans do. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry wrote some gorgeous ballads. This one written at the piano by Steven - of course Joe Perry took the melody out for a spin with his guitar….and boom. ❤️🎼🤘😎
Aerosmith had so many great songs in the 70s. Back In The Saddle, Round and Round, Kings And Queens, and Last Child are a few that I think you guys might enjoy.
yeah, kings & queens is fantastic
Old Aerosmith is the best. I saw them in concert many times in the 80's.
This is from Aerosmith's 1973 self titled debut album Aerosmith. That's why he sounds different.
This song to me represents not giving up, you can accomplish what you want. Just keep singing and keep dreaming
I had that album oh good times
Em's song was called Sing for the moment, off The Eminem Show album
Was very young when heard this now I'm 60. It is like dust to dawn
