    Like the RIA a lot - I've thought about collecting RIA handguns just for price point and usability.I bought a Model 10 in 1982 for $185. In today's money that would be $456. I'd say that new Smith revolvers are currently overpriced, and used two inch 10's and 64's are going almost as much as what you can get a new Model 10 or Model 64 for.

    Got my revolver fix this morning. Definitely love the older guns. I'll gladly pay the $5-600 price tag on Smiths if it gets me a pinned barrel and no lock lol.

    enjoyed this video, as I have all your videos...I've been thinking for a while that there seems to be a movement back to revolvers and less reckless abandon to acquire a semi auto at any cost. the market is finding it's balance? the days of less expensive/good deals of wheel guns may be over.

    Batjac JW I'm missing a good single action cowboy gun in my collection. Does that Cimmaron have a decent amount/good looking case hardening?

    • @BATJACJW
      @BATJACJW  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The case hardening is ok not the best but what I like about them is the fact it's for the most part true to the colt SAA. I have a HD close up video on it in the HD playlist if you want to see it close up.

      John Grytbakk That's not gonna happen. Read recently in Guns & Ammo mag where the leaders of Colt back when they stopped producing them thought they would only be filling defense contacts in the future like the AR and so forth, so they destroyed or got rid (can't remember which) all the machinery to produce them. Sad indeed.

      I originally moved from CT after living there for a while, I brought a lots of Colts gun as investment from the people who know Colt and worked for Colt for many years. Colt has get rids a lots of Good peoples and machinist like my friends. Colt made 3 introduced firearms like 1903, and Police Police and Detective. The parts of these guns are currently made in S. America. I have Python 6" blue Brought new in 1978 on my Graduation Days for $325.00 with law away plan. I still have it and I brought another one in 1993 for $399.00 blue. I brought S&W Model 29 in 8 3/4" after Sun of Sam incident in 1977 the gun was used in Nickel plate and in new in presentation case for $250.00. I had a lots of parts that taken from production lines from Colt and Ruger. Now I moved to MD.

  • @dtnetlurker
    @dtnetlurker 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Pinning the barrel was an older manufacturing technique to help secure the barrel from moving after many years of use. With modern machining and manufacturing it became a waste of time and money. The new Smiths are "crush fitted" or torqued at such an amazingly tight tolerance that they will never move and will stay rock solid for the entire life of the firearm. A pin would be a complete waste of time and money and would have zero purpose for todays gun barrels.
    Now the cylinder recessing was only done by Smith and Wesson for rim fires and magnums because cartridges used to have heads that were folded or crimped over the walls of the cartridge, called balloon-head cartridges.. The cartridge was weaker at the head and the recessed cylinder helped with strength around the head. Cartridges are no longer produced this way and haven't been for many many decades. It was no longer needed due to advances in bullet manufacturing, so it was dropped. End of Story. It wasn't just because S&W wanted to cut costs. That is crap spread around by collectors and gun show dealers to ask nearly 2 grand for a 40-50 year old gun that is absolutely no different and is actually weaker. YES WEAKER in a few key areas.
    All pre 1983 S&W Model 29s don't have what S&W calls "The endurance package". It has harder heat treatment of the yoke, stronger radiused trigger and hammer pins, deeper lock up notches and a tighter cylinder fit. Don't take my word for it though, look it up.
    You are much better off getting a brand new one or one that is only a few years old. After 83 they were made better and stronger. It's a simple fact. The pinned and recessed jive that the collectors spew is complete garbage. What is sad is a lot of buyers that are out to get a Smith M29 believe that nonsense.
    Now the vintage grips were nicer. That is true. The beauty of the Model 29 though, is the frame itself hasn't changed in many many decades and the vintage grips will fit the new ones perfectly. You can get a very nice set of early 80s or late 70s grips for a $100-150 on ebay, maybe less at a gun show. The earlier ones go for more but are not usually in good condition. You can also find perfect reproductions that look like authentic vintage grips, only brand spanking new. You just need to take time to look for them.

    • @garyK.45ACP
      @garyK.45ACP 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colt revolvers never had, or needed, a pin. Why? The rifling twist causes the barrel to be torqued TIGHTER. Reversing the direction of twist (or barrel threading) is all that is needed. Colt uses a LH rifling twist. S&W a RH. The force of turque on the barrel is OPPOSITE the twist, which means the Colt barrel is torqued to the RIGHT when fired...the direction of rotation to TIGHTEN the barrel in the frame. No pin needed. No "crush fit" needed.
