I think the perpetual goal of this front office is to just do the minimum, to just do enough so that the Jays can compete for one of the wild card spots and in the best case scenario, get one before being promptly eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. This is a win for them as long as people still keep showing up at Rogers centre. I think they will pretend to be serious contenders to win the AL East and make a deep postseason run, but actually have no genuine intention of doing so. One memory sticks in my mind in particular that makes me think this way and nothing has made me change my mind since then. It was 2016, the final game of the season at Fenway when the Jays clinched a position in the Wild Card game. When the cameras flicked to GM Atkins and Shapiro in the stands (who were in their first year) , they were celebrating like they had won the AL pennant. But hey I really hope that I am wrong and that they go all out and get enough talent to make a real push. I really doubt it though.
Rey better not be done because this team is not a playoff team . If they can add one more impact bat ( Alonso or bregman ) and another decent starter they will be a playoff team and could go on a run if everyone is hitting well etc
I think your wrong they r a wild card team but we more way more to finish the job.. making the playoffs and winning in the playoffs are two different things
I think they can get any of the remaining players who are on market at a good price . They should acquire Alonso or bregman (preferably Alonso ) I think they can get Alonso for around the same amount they paid for Santander. 4 years $80 million ? Afterwards they should get Flaherty or another top 3 starter . I would like to see them add another elite bulpen guy in addition. Especially knowing Hoffman has questions about his injury. If jays can manage to do all of that , I think they make playoffs 100%. Also think they can do some damage if bichette can get back to his original form of hitting around .300 and being one of the top hitters in league . Springer RF Bichette Ss Guererro 1 Santander LF Alonso DH Kirk C Varsho CF gimenez 2nd Clement 3rd Looks a lot different then last year . That top 5 looks very strong
I struggle to see a world where we land Scherzer. I obliviously don’t know the guy but after an injury riddled past couple seasons and a HOF career he has to be considering retirement. If I’m his agent I’m using that as leverage to say he might just retire if he doesn’t get his Goldilocks contract, which to come to Toronto and fight for a wild card, is a lot of money.
Max Scherzer is 40, I would much rather get someone else, unless he's okay with a 1 year contract, which he won't be. Just do add to the conversation about the Dodgers vs Golden State comparison about being the Villians, yes they've won less championships, however I would say for me it's much worst for the Dodgers, at least most of the core for a long time with GSW was drafted by them, and they just re-signed those players (ex. for Durant). Most of the Dodgers best players they straight up bought with their massively deep pockets
Ichiro . . . not a single season where he slugged over .500 . . . not a single season where he hit over .900 OPS. It could be argued that, and maybe this line of thought explains the single omission on the ballot, corner outfielders need to hack. Still loved Ichiro's style and panache, but there's no doubt that he tailored his swing to fatten the AVG, limiting his potential to be a more valuable offensive contributor. In short: He could have been even greater than what he was. Still a fantastic ballplayer and a worthy inductee, but, meh, dude chose to cut down his swing to keep the base knocks a comin', focusing on what he did well, potentially at the cost of helping the Mariners to a greater degree. He was comfortable doing what he did, foregoing extra bases. I mean, it was his choice not to slug. If he wanted to, and there's no doubt he could have with his bat-to-ball skills, his prime could have been Willie Mays-esque with all the extra power and runs-created he could have thrown down. He chose not to, though. It is what it is.
I don’t agree with BNS on the jays need pitching more then hitting . Especially power hitting , home runs RBIs etc . Alonso has been among the best at both since he’s joined the Mets . Jays were one of the worst teams for hitting last year . Bringing in Alonso will change the dynamic of this roster . Not only would they have Santander to back up Vladdy but you would have Alonso as well. Also to mention I think both players will benefit immensely in playing at the rogers centre . Can you imagine the numbers Alonso would have put up for the Mets had it been at the rogers centre ? Rogers centre is a players friendly field with some of the shortest feet in left and right field .
Can't agree with Ben on almost anything.. Pavetta requires draft pick compensation no one will sign him. Profar only performed for one season.. Alonso is only second to Judge in home runs in last 5 years sign him he is the top priority Vlad can play some third base which he wants to do.. adding Santander, Alonso means 75 to 90 home runs add that to Vladdy 35 and Bichettes prove it year of 25 to 30 helps that aging rotation because they aren't in one run games. Get a couple of retread starters if you have to Manoah and Ricky should be back later in the year, Sherzer is not a priority he is a mistake in the next year or two the odds aren't good with nerve damage in his back.
The dodgers is absolutely a dynasty . They will go back to back this year . If they can keep those guys they will win 3 or 4 in a row . And always be a contender
I will take the field.. Ohtani and Sasaki could both go down with injuries pitching as can most of their rotation. They look great but the baseball gods are against them.
@ even if they went out with injuries they still have a stacked rotation lol . Did you forget they added Blake snell? And two of the best relief pitcher and closer lol and they have the best Offense . There literally a dynasty
@Thegentelmansclub929 They probably will but I will still take the field instead. 162 games is a long season and the Dodgers don't do well keeping their pitchers off of the DL.
Management finally serious about competing. I shouldn't say finally, they tried to get Ohtani last year then there wasn't much available on the free agent market. A lot of things went wrong last year. Management isn't 100% to blame IMO.
I have no idea how to predict the pitching. They lost 100% of their WAR value from 2023 to 2024. Can't be that bad again, but how good can it be? Personally, I'm comfortable with the additions in the pen and a starter who can throw 160 quality innings would be invaluable. The offense/ defense lost 5 war . That's about 20% of its WAR from the 2021-2023 lineups - which was consistently at 32ish. 27 last year Bo was 5 short alone. A rebound gets us back to normal- let alone a complete team rebound. Santander absolutely adds that power we need and now i can see a pathway to 80hrs/60sbs/180+ runs that weren't in this lineup last year. That includes a 25hr/20sb season from Bo and Vlad hitting 40hr. We should be approaching the levels of our peak.
Yes but we are still not a playoff team . Our batting was awful last year and yes Santander is a huge addition to this lineup . Unfortunately they need one more impact bat before they can be serious .
@Thegentelmansclub929 I think they are an easy playoff team. Central isn't sending 3 teams again. If everyone plays to expectations they add 180+ runs and win 90.
Miami is projected in the 80m range. They need to hit 105m in order to qualify for for the revenue sharing...which is about 70-80m to them. They are a legit option to take a teams money for prospects. Fanatically thinking- Alcantara (17m) for Springer and Bassitt (around 45m) and whatever prospects it takes. Make it an 8 man trade. I'm absolutely shocked that nothing we acquired at the deadline was traded.
JD is my favourite to listen to, he's educated, not a fanboy, and has realistic takes. Keep it up bro 👊🏼

I don't think you're wrong. I'm unsure how these two are still there after accomplishing so little in almost 10 seasons.
Miles Straw contract looks fantastic now... at Edward Rogers.

He'd be great to have around for a year. A wily old presence for the younger guys to learn from, not just the pitchers but all the players.
Max Scherzer is 40, I would much rather get someone else, unless he's okay with a 1 year contract, which he won't be.

Get Trevor bauer he's good and he's cheap!
Life needs second chances.

The Jays should look at there Buffalo affiliate! Like get Barger he's an awesome player that won't cost you a fortune!

I can't stand him, his takes are usually terrible
People who don't know that Santander has a deferred deal, likely don't even know who he is.
The dodgers is absolutely a dynasty . They will go back to back this year . If they can keep those guys they will win 3 or 4 in a row . And always be a contender

I don't want to hear Nick Pivetta's name again.
Maybe the Marlin’s would trade for Springer to get their payroll up to league minimum to keep from getting in trouble from the league
There's no league minimum salary in the MLB.
@ I thought if they received money from the league they were expected to spend it on players not to pocket it. Sorry , my bad.
I think Geminez and Santander are replacement insurance policies for if and when Bo and Vladdy leave.
Nope
Management finally serious about competing. I shouldn't say finally, they tried to get Ohtani last year then there wasn't much available on the free agent market. A lot of things went wrong last year. Management isn't 100% to blame IMO.
Pitching is an absolute need for a competing team but so is hitting, smart base running, shrewd management and team chemistry.
4th place.
I think Rodgers heard the noise. We were becoming the laughing stock of MLB. He said go for it.
The Dodgers are owned a Hedge Fund. Having a team owned by a corporation is a bad idea.
I have no idea how to predict the pitching. They lost 100% of their WAR value from 2023 to 2024. Can't be that bad again, but how good can it be?

Trade Bichette for good pitcher and me be good bat
Make trade with San Diego shortstop and there pitcher for springer eat half his contract and a bunch of minor leaguers
Alonso instead or profar
Ross Atkins has destroyed this franchise. Amazing how inept someone at his level of profession can be at this job
4th place.
