Just gotta say.. as a nurse practionner i would not advise anyone to take melatonine for a long period of time, even if it is natural, since your body could get use to it and stop producing it on its own and then you could end up needing melatonine to sleep for the rest of your life...it can be use safely if you do really suffer from insomnia for a short period of time, but is really not recommended for a long period of time. Insomnia is a serious condition that should be taken in charge by a professionnal health specialist if it causes deficits or problems in the person’s life and should not be treated without a professionnal’s opinion.

Not only that but you build up tolerance to it so you have to keep taking larger doses to get the effect.

I wanted to counter this, I'm a pharmacologist and people do not produce dependencies on melatonin, and the body will not stop producing melatonin if exogenous melatonin is consumed. It is safe to use for periods of up to 13 weeks. That being said, it is better for people not to have to rely on medications, unless they have to to get to sleep/sleep hygiene is really important!

A tip for trying to sleep fast is to close your eyes and picture one color(i choose black because that is the color I see) and not thinking of anything else. I fall asleep so fast.

  • @Decembersown21

Monica is essentially one long ad at this point. Even on IG. It's constant. Before I get railed for saying it and being told "bUt iTs hEr j0b" -- this is a great way of diluting your content for monetary gain, which is ironically based on gaining a following because of your previous non-diluted content. Imagine sacrificing user interest for *insert advertiser here* and a paycheck. When you can just run regular in video ads and make money that way, especially when you avg 100k views per video. Instead of turning people off by serving a 10 minute subtle ad.

You know a lot of people have ad blockers as well as TH-cam takes half of what creators make from TH-cam ads and TH-cam ad CPMs are currently much lower because of covid and companies doing less ad spending? So it's not black and white of just post a video, get 100k videos and your set, I think it's ok if sometimes we have to watch a video that's still way better, well produced and edited verses 90% of the other sponsorships you tubers do for her to make a bit more money in hard times like this.

You should read "Why we sleep". My boyfriend read it and has told me so many fascinating things about how important sleep is for your health (like, more important than diet or exercise). It sounds like some of the sleep-inducing drugs don't necessarily help you get the kind of sleep you need for brain repair. I haven't read the book yet but it's on my list and I'm hoping you will be able to read it too and we can both get some useful tips for improving sleep quality!
"Atomic habits" sounds a lot like "The power of habit". So if you want more reading about building habits, that might be a good book too!

    1. If you have trouble sleeping -> Read/listen to the book "Caffeine" (by Michael Pollan) ( TLDR limit caffeine intake)
    2. You can save money and be on the safer side by slicing your Melatonin, figure out the littlest amount you need to sleep. I personally use around a 1gram melatonin per portion. But this is something individual . Use it only when it's really important to fall asleep quick.
p.s dilute the ads a little bit more next time :P :)

Similarly I'm sure TH-cam ad money isn't the best right now and brand deals have probably been pulled. So if Monica needs to do a couple more ads than normal the audience is really gonna be this upset? Seems unfair that most of you pay her nothing to create amazing content but then get mad when she needs to make a bit more money.. Being a TH-camr and making quality content is not easy what so ever, don't take it for granted. Also even if is is an ad, some of this stuff really is helpful for people of they are looking for these tips.

I started doing an early rise habit-building some time ago. I found that putting a freshwater bottle next to my bed and drinking it when I first wake up seems to help some of the cloudy mental issues that come with the habit change. It can be a store-bought bottle of water, or I fill up just a small 8 oz plastic water bottle that is ready to go. Good luck with your change. I really appreciate the point of view of wanting to improve yourself and work out from there. Robert M Persig in Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance said "The place to improve the world is first in one's own heart and head and hands, and work outward from there."

I have been waking up before 5am for the last 10 years for Fajr (Morning prayer). What I do is set the alarm on my phone and keep my phone in my bathroom with the lights on and go to sleep. When the alarm goes off I go to the bathroom and lock the door and then turn off the alarm and then take a cold shower. That wakes me up pretty good. This seems to work for me and have kind of become a habit. Pro tip: try to go to bed early and don't take any naps in the day. It helps as your body becomes exhausted after a long day of work. Hope this works for you. If you want more early waking up tricks you can ask any of your Muslim friends, about how they wake up early for morning prayer. I wish you the very best, Monica!!!

Because I dont drive and rely on public transportation, my schedule is determined if I'm leaving the house . To be at work by 8am I have to leave the house and walk to my bus stop by 6:15am and I get to my work by 7:30. In order to get ready at a comfortable pace (not rushing) is by getting up at 5am, do quick skin care, makeup, get dressed, and pack my lunch. I do go to bed around 8pm so that helps. But its to the point sometimes on weekends I wake up @5am on my own without a alarm. 7am is considered sleeping in for me but I often get up. I will admit that if I wake up at 5am when I dont have to leave my house, I will end up taking a nap for an hour or two because I find home a comfy place.

I have always been a morning person but when I started to work at a 6AM shift...it changed me. It was a struggle to get up at 4:30AM to be ready by 5AM and to be our the door by 5:30AM. I live like 5 - 10 minutes away from work but I like to be early to get some work started before the phones start ringing off the hook. Seeing the productivity from doing that, gave me more motivation for waking up that early so...5 years later...me sleeping in is 6:30 - 7:30AM.

I am a clinical psychologist, and when I treat people with insomnia and other similar sleep issues, I do have them "jump into it." I have them wake up at the same time every morning (e.g., 5:00 a.m. or whatever time they choose). In fact, research shows that "jumping into it" is an extremely effective way to increase quality and quantity of sleep. It is definitely hard at first though, and you will feel sleepy for a few days but there will not be any serious health consequences of doing this unless you are actually sick or have certain underlying medical conditions (e.g., sleep apnea). The reason why waking up at the same time every morning, even when it is a drastic switch, works so well is because having a consistent wake time sets your circadian rhythm and builds your sleep drive so you'll be sleepy at night at an earlier time. For example, think about if you had stayed awake that first day you woke up at 5:00 a.m. instead of napping. I bet you would have easily fallen asleep earlier that night and slept peacefully throughout the night! I also often advise people not to "try to go to sleep early," or set "bed times." Rather, I encourage people to go to sleep when they are sleepy because of stimulus control issues. That is, you want to pair your bed with sleep and not much else. When you lay in bed awake, you pair your bed with wakefulness which ultimately can make it harder for you to fall asleep. Here is a medium article I wrote about sleep that has much more detail: medium.com/invisible-illness/the-covid-19-lockdown-and-sleep-what-you-need-to-know-a2e253d36c2b
I encourage you (Monica), and anyone else looking to improve your sleep schedule to read my medium or do research on effective ways to improve your sleep routine. Ultimately, it is most important to do what works for you. So if gradually doing this is what is going to make this sustainable for you, that's great and keep up the progress! Good luck on your self-improvement journey, Monica! (Also, I LOVED your method to keep yourself accountable that first day you woke up at 5:00 a.m. V creative!!)

For 10+ years I moved my alarm/cellphone across the room from where I get out of bed. This forced me to have to be awake by the time I got to my alarm. This has helped me through 3 different jobs: two had 6:30 start times and the other one had a 4:00 start time (yes, 6:30 AM and 4:00 AM.)

But in terms of productivity, i feel exhausted, tired and so on.

I work 6-3 so normally, if I were commuting, I'd wake up at 5 a.m. But since I'm working from my living room, I've started slipping to the 5:45 a.m. and it's CRAZY how much that extra 45 mins. fucks with my system. I'm trying to ease myself into a morning walking routine now so that I can maintain my "normal" work routine and iron out my sleep schedule.

i've been loving waking up early! Ive been doing it with my boyfriend so we FaceTime each other every morning at 6 so that was helpful to keep us accountable! I also wanna say if you're on other medications check with your doctor just to make sure about melatonin! I didn't know my medication didn't react well with melatonin so I ended up sleeping for 16 HOURS since a side effect was sedation... So i've been using sleep meditations which have helped with my insomnia! :)

When I was your age, used to get up at 5am, eat a high protein meal (low carbs).. then work out.. run, bike ride, go to the gym .. eat carbs.. . takes several weeks to get your body in the rhythm, but makes for a real productive day. Hey, I just turned 61, maybe I should do that again, never too old!!!

If you have a hard time falling asleep, try downloading the app sanvello. They have a meditation section that includes muscle relaxation exercises. I do the muscle relaxation exercises and then do the sleep meditation to fall asleep fast and within minutes I'm asleep and I get a good restful sleep. Doing both exercises takes about 10 min.

Can you do a video about your upbringing/prison ledgers/worldview outlooks? I am around the same age as you, a young single mom, and you genuinely seem like such a sweet soul, I would like to hear your views on those things, as someone close to your age and raising a child. I feel like I would be proud of my daughter turned out like you, and I think a lot of people would be interested in hearing your opinions about those topics! Love you! I think the same as you about being more productive, but I also work later. I'm not sure it's a lifestyle that can be "adapted to." P.S. I love the Airstream project. DD
