I love the squire's mighty defiance. The whole film is a masterpiece, and it grows richer on every viewing. The scene in the confessional alone is staggering.
After watching this movie i wonder if the crusader and his friend actually died on the return trip to Sweden. The knight decided to challenge death and so the movies starts on the beach in purgatory. Each of the characters had already died... The group, excepting the acting troupe family, failed the purgatory 'test' and so Death led them away I could be grossly wrong but I think it is an interesting thought.
Yust a beatiful movie, possible one om the best non-mainstream movies ever. Every line, every director-thought has been plan into perfection. The chessboard play the role as the path of his life and his fight against his question and ambivalens against the question about what life is. I think this represent Bergman's person i somehow. Yust beautiful.. as simple as that.

What else remains is the spectre before us, and those of us who cling to the light are not to be blamed, but only for our actions and not our belief; in fact we may be justified. Should the converse be the case, that those of us who cling to the light err, we cannot say we execute error in the face of God's plan, but only
So at the end when the Knight's entourage "dies" is Death taking both their body and spirits to the other side or just the spirit. Reason I ask is because of the "dance" at the end of the movie.
Well, Bergman just took advantage of a cloud hanging low over the hill on the last evening of filming. Most of the actors had already left so he dressed up some film workers in the actors' clothes. It was not planned. Interpretation is up to the viewer I guess. I never heard Bergman elaborate on it.
@according2ed Thats because you only watch american movies which are given enough funding to make it to your country with enough exposure for you to be aware of. Have you ever sought after American independent films? How dare you throw a countries creative into the same threshold.
