Japan's White Strawberry: Luxury Fruit Unboxing & Adventure ★ ONLY in JAPAN

  • I was in the basement supermarket in Shibuya and -- THERE IT WAS! THE WHITE STRAWBERRY!
    I could smell it a few meters away. Was it real? (Yes, it was.)
    One white strawberry cost 1080 Yen (US$10.00) so I decided to learn more about the Japanese white strawberry and unbox it for you in this video ... and that is what this episode is all about. It's the door into a new world full of strawberries in Japan.
    About Japan's White Strawberry:
    There are so many varieties / cultivars of strawberries in Japan.
    The HATSUKOI NO KAORI or “SCENT OF FIRST LOVE” is Japan's first white strawberry, different than the pineberry because of its size, softer skin and juiciness and sugar content. It was created by Miyoshi Agritech Co. of Yamanashi in 2006.
    In the episode, I ate the
    SHIROU HOUSEKI 白い宝石 White Strawberry.
    Cost: 1080 Yen ($10) for 1.
    Weight: about 50 grams
    It must be eaten within 24 hours according to the store manager at Tokyu's fruit section at Foodshow. They're grown on in Saga prefecture on Kyushu Island.
    Other vareties of What Strawberries include:
    ★ Yuki Usagi "Snow Rabbit" 雪うさぎ
    ★ Sakura ichigo "Cherry Blossom Strawberry" さくらいちご
    ★ Tenshi no Mi "" Fruit of the Angels' 天使の味
    Featured White Strawberries
    ★ Shiroi Houseki "White Jewel / White Gem" 白い宝石
    ★ Hatsukoi no Kaori "Scent of First Love" 初恋の香り
    ☆ Pineberry / Popular in the UK and Europe but not available in Japan
    The strawberry season in Japan is from December to March, winter being the best season because the berry ripens more slowly, building up the sugar content and color over a greater period of time. Temperature control is essential. Almost all of Japan's strawberries are in greenhouses.
    I also went to my neighbor's farm in Ichikawa to learn more about strawberries in general. There are about 25,000 strawberry farms in Japan but sometimes your neighbor sells the best ones and is a great source on information. Thank you, Ota-san!
    If you ever ask yourself, what is the white strawberry? This is you answer. Try one if you find them while traveling in Japan.

    I found this by googling white strawberries. I have gone the opposite direction, into the realm of teeny tiny strawberries. Where I live, I found native American wild strawberries, fragaria virginiana, and I started growing them in my garden, and I love them. But I accidentally collected from a patch that turned out to be white strawberries, because I had misidentified them - they were fragaria vesca, the woodland strawberry. It turns out that there might POSSIBLY be a native variant of the woodland strawberry, but I haven't identified it well enough to know for sure. This is a natural variant, and it doesn't require any special treatment. They grew out in the sunlight all day long, and they still grew white strawberries, which were sweet, with a mild flavor, very different from the strongly flavored red ones. I have decided that I love both of them, and I'm going to keep on collecting more of both varieties and growing them in my garden, which is what I'm doing today. It makes me so happy to go around picking them every spring.

    I grow alpine white strawberries in my garden. They are french and very tasty.
    The plants are prolific, giving fruit all year long, and the birds are more likely to eat my traditional red strawberries and leave the white ones alone.
    They are small and very sweet- and taste a little like pineapple. Unlike traditional strawberries, you grow these from seed- they take forever to germinate, but it is well worth it.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can grow traditional strawberries from seed too. You just don't, because it takes much longer. Same goes for plenty of plants.

      +holistic79 you can buy with your money whatever you want. Blame Nike, UA, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, GAP, AD agencies, the consumer ... but a small content producer who ate a $10 strawberry? Get real. -John

    • @kylie_kai_kai
      @kylie_kai_kai 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think holistic79 was critiquing wholesalers (for lack of a better term) and the multi-vocal, yet corrupted public images of value. Especially in North America, when you associate a fruit (that is fairly affordable) to such a large sum of money, you start questioning comfort, profanity, hedonism etc.
      I mean that would be a dick move to blame a small content producer (you) encouraging education, for brainwashing.

    Honestly, there's not many people that could make something like strawberries seem this interesting (even if it were outside of Japan).
    The format and pacing just flows so naturally each time, and it's both a shame that it seems to be really difficult to find channels like these that can really deliver genuinely interesting videos, but at the same time the ones that do manage to nail it makes TH-cam even worth visiting in the first place.
    Now I really want to test one of those white strawberries, but considering that I would have to possibly travel all the way to Japan... Would rather just go wild and hope it finds it's way along the path.
    There's just too much out there that's worth checking out, but I'm just glad to discover what's out there in the first place.
    Something tells me that the noodles over there are way better than here, though~ x3

      don't worry. white strawberries aren't sweet. it's just grown in the dark. and since the size, I guess a lot of chemicals.
      I had accidentally grown some white strawberries. underground, some of my strawberries grew a little underground.
      and the white are completely genetically modified. crossbreeding is just a different word for modification. so people don't get scared.

    • @calzonexiv
      @calzonexiv 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      actually cross breeding is when the pollen of one plant type is crossed into the receiving plant of another type. genetic modification is exactly what it sounds like; they take a plant type and change the actual genetics of that plant in order to create a new sub-strain of the same plant. Please do not spread fear around based on falsifications.

    John, will the white ones eventually ripen and turn red or at least pink over time if left to sit or exposed to sunlight? And would it make them even sweeter? Sort of like how tomatoes off the vine will do the same. Or does the lack of anthocyanin keep this from happening?

    • @WaoryuONLYinJAPAN
      @WaoryuONLYinJAPAN  8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Great question! According the Tejima-san, 10% of the white strawberries he produces (Shiroi Houseki) will stay white the whole time. That's what I bought. Most will start to turn red. There's a photo from Tejima-san's farm with the harvested berries. Some are already turning, some turning pink! -John

      I've seen them in numerous parts around America too. I wonder why he thinks that tiny strawberry is "normal" size? Maybe just claiming as such for this video?

    • @WaoryuONLYinJAPAN
      @WaoryuONLYinJAPAN  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +L Khokhlakov that berry is the size of the majority of strawberries I ate as a kid in New Jersey. To me, that's normal. Anything bigger would be large and then XL.
      These days, bigger doesn't always mean better. To get natural sugar content high, it needs to mature slowly which is why it's in a green house in the winter not in the summer. They ripen too fast in summer and taste more acidic and sour. Japanese consumers won't normally buy a sour berry so it's the only way to sell them, in the winter. Maintain a sweet and large berry, you can charge double the price per kg.
      Would love to try to Washington strawberry! Cool weather must make them delicious too. Now, Japan is loaded with American cherries from Washington! Super red and super sweet!! -John

    • @pidgeon666
      @pidgeon666 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ONLY in JAPAN I don't know how long ago that was, but the white strawberry is closer to the normal size for strawberries these days (still a little larger maybe). I agree that bigger is not necessarily better. I think it was the 90s when I remember seeing a bunch of giant fruits and vegetables - only they had the same amount of flavor, just spread out over a larger area.
      I will say that the larger strawberries I've had in the states are still generally good and flavorful. Definitely tart, but I think that's good. Sweetness is actually a very bland flavor that contemporary societies are now conditioned to crave.
