Old canvas side curtains, double tarps, those were the days when driving the trucks was an art and a true profession. How times have changed. Miss these good old days.
From on old truckie of the 70's and 80's. Watching these rigs and thinking of the blokes today. Most trucks are automatic, aluminium sides and load binders. Blokes today, can't tarp, tie a rope, use a dog and chain and can't change gears. Too damned easy. Most of the old 'gentlemen' have pulled the pin, died or like me retired.
Mate I only miss the 80's because the blokes were a different breed, there were far more gentlemen on the road, present company excepted, thanks for the comment Regards David
Thanks for recalling old memories and the Slim Dusty tune 'Foggy Mirrors' and as mentioned before, the 80's were a different breed of men, I enjoyed operating some of these types of trucks and semi's, thanks again for bringing enjoyment to an old ex - truckie !!
Anyone remember sharing campfires and Nullarbor stew? Or blokes stopping to help you and ending up mates? Or the silly bugger in an old '68 Atkinson who towed a Vatican Mack with a broken tail shaft from a dead start halfway up Sylvia's hill?
@@roostersbays95 Early 80s getting stuck in Brisbane and spending the weekend parked up in the highway hotel near the QTT. I actually developed a taste for XXXX haha.
@mrrotary72 There is a line in the song"the race to beat the traffic & the race to beat the scales" if you can figure out what the "scales" refers to you will understand how I got the images and how I knew all the weights. Thanks again for the comments.
I guess you're right there. But I remember when I started in the early '80s guys would say that you would get run over if you broke down, and they still say that today! But there were a lot more owner-operators then and we did tend to help each other out.
Hey Dave, its amazing whats out there, the early eighties were the best of times, to many do gooders, in the later years....................I still remember all those watermelons at Tamworth
Thanks for the interesting video from the life of Australian truck drivers. I recommend watching a selection of photos from the life of Russian truck and bus drivers on your channel.
i still have the odd crack every now and then , and i tell you all, its shit compared to the 70's , 80's and to the start of the 90s. nothing like it, uncomparable. thats all. a great and unique way of life has been lost forever and along with it some real different sorts .
Interesting nostalgia of when North Coast NSW had a timber industry. This was a good era when semitrailers were much more welcomely sophisticated than their 1950s ancestors but rougher around the edges compared to the mid-1990s up until today.
Great photos mate. 1981 was when I started interstate.......times have changed, in some ways for the better and some ways for the worse. But all in all, and I don't know about you, but I don't really miss the '80s!
Great pics there Mate, remember seeing some of those trucks when i was travellin with my dad...LOL..some good loads there as well..thanks for the look..
Just awesome. One of not that many youtube clips I've stuck in my favourites, brings back the most vivid memories of times, trucks and tunes.. How the hell do you remember all those agg weights though??
Beauty, i'll be waiting Dave....also hope you don't mind i sent it to half a dozen guys who i thought would like it as well, looks like it's a hit by the comments here..LOL
Not gettin it. I saw you wrote that in the description too, but I know every word to Foggy Mirrors.. Can only think you're referring to the mirrors and every detail remembered..?
I can’t believe how hard things looked back then compared to today but that is the way it was & that was the job of trucking.Only real men need to apply.Sorry ladies but back then female drivers were very rare compared to today where there are a lot more.

I used to just stare at SAR’s, Road Boss’s and Road Commanders across the road as they’d pull up at the road house.
Still beautiful.

1980's no speed limiter, so those trucks will be doing 120 140 kph, then the crashes come.
Good i wish Australia was still like this!
Your not alone
