you are so correct on this. Restoring a car is a huge time sink and a huge financial burden, unless you have plenty of time and money. my neighbor had a real Z28 from the eras you were talking about. It took him over 4 years and i don't know how many $$ to restore, but he worked at it almost every night.
Yeah it's really hard to justify the build vs buy unless you already have ALL of the parts, are well experienced with paint and body work, fabrications skills, engine building, etc. Just my 02.
Right you are, sir! My rat rod body cost 500 bucks. I did all labor except the Trans ($2600). I started 7 years ago buying parts. It took me 5 years to complete it. Over $45,000 in parts and countless hours of my labor. I don't regret it tho. There aren't many of us who can brag about building our own cars. Pride, baby! I take pride in being in the minority. The minority that have the skills.

For me there is no choice it's build it... My 74 charger sunroof car cost. $375 to buy...a body shell to another 74 charger cost me $500 with title and tags...and I had all the parts from a parts car for it to build it..#3 74 charger I got for free kid gave up and could not keep it due too township ordinance lots of parts came with that... My 71 charger se 383 paid $1100 running and driving...my 72 dart got it for free for a repair job to a tow truck light bar..... Over 20 engines and 18 mopar transmissions bought form you pull it in 90s at $25 a transmission and no more than $200 for an engine bought two motor home 440s with transmissions for $200 each stick bore both with under 35k on engines the show zero cylinder wear and you can still see the hone marks... So building is more my thing. There isn't anything I can't do myself on any of my Mopars or my modern beaters period.... I have a heater core job coming in on a 2018 Ram 2500 complete dash must be removed to do the job and yeah I'll do it all on my own... So build it is my only way 😂😁💪🇺🇸
