    ABOUT THE HELICOPTER
    This is a Bell UH-1H on ultra high skids with fast fin BLR strake and composite main and tailrotor blades. The sound has not been edited.
    ABOUT THE VIDEO
    The video was recorded on an iPhone Xs on a tripod. Audio was recorded into the phone using an external microphone with a "dead cat" cover to prevent wind noise from distorting the sound..
    The video was edited on a iMac using DaVinci Resolve software. Learn more about Resolve here: www.blackmagic...
    The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed "Dr. Mac." You can find him here: www.boblevitus....
    ABOUT THIS CHANNEL
    I TRY to drop cockpit POV videos on Sunday mornings and "extras" (like this one!) with more info about owning and operating a helicopter midweek. (Some channel members get early access to some of these videos.) I also host occasional livestreams with Q&A chats. SUBSCRIBE and turn on the notification bell so you don't miss anything new! When I was serving in the Air National Guard, we had an Army Guard detachment next to us and they were still flying Hueys. We were able to sign up and go on flights with them and it was awesome...doors wide open and probably totaled around 3 hours for the flight (we landed for about an hour and grabbed a bite to eat). The pilots were great and it was a cool experience! Shortly after, they got rid of their Hueys and got the Blackhawk.

    I have always built things in my professional career. If I were wealthy, I have for 50 years known that I would either renovate or recondition a Huey. The most beautiful helicopter and the most awesome sound even now. I also try to imagine what that must have been like seeing them coming towards you after having been in a firefight having met the enemy as a Vietnam soldier.

    Love the sound of huey starting up, the whine of the turbines, the snapping of the igniters, and the womp when the fuel kicks in.
    Had to lookup BLR Strakes, and Fastfin. Didn't see the skinny vertical fin and the hump on tail boom till after I googled it. More tail rotor authority, is a good thing.
    Thanks for the video, it's great.

    I just love the UH1 - such a classic and of course - the sound! (I believe the characteristic "chop'' sound is due to leading edge vortex - most apparent when heli flying towards you)

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, jeez. You're right! I don't know how I didn't notice that, but I do know how it happened. It's got to do with the way I rendered the video in DaVinci Resolve -- I rendered "all" audio tracks when I should have rendered the "master" track. TH-cam only allows one audio track so any sound that isn't on Track 1 is removed. I must have put the music on Track 2. Sorry about that and thanks very much for pointing it out. I can't fix it without re-uploading the video as a new title; it isn't worth it just for the music. Don't tell Bob. 😉

    I am amazed how far down the forward end the spinning main rotor blade is tilted on start up, almost right up to the moment the pilot begins to lift off, then the whole rotating main blade seems to become more parallel to the ground as one would assume it to be. Excuse the layman's non pilot speak.

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The forward tilt of the main rotor disc was caused by him having the cyclic stuck pushed forward farther than usual when starting up. In such a tall helicopter - this one was on extra high skids - this is not a big deal; the main rotor blades are still pretty far from the ground. Before taking off, he pulled the stick back to level the blades, which is required for lifting off straight up.

  • @hifiandrew
    @hifiandrew 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why does the pilot appear to be pushing the cyclic forward the whole time right up until take off? Is there are reason to tilt the blade forward during startup?

    Is it typical to leave a fuel truck Parked right next to an aircraft that is going to take off?

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't say typical, but it isn't unusual. The truck isn't that close -- certainly more than a rotor radius away. (It would definitely be unusual to park a fuel truck under the rotor disc.) The video does make it look very close, though!

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Privacy, mostly. Although the pilot did not ask me to, I didn't see any reason not to.
      Unfortunately, there are a few troublemakers (AKA losers) on TH-cam who have nothing better to do than nitpick the way a pilot or helicopter operates and then complain to the FAA. This is not only detrimental to me (and my channel) and the pilots/operators, but it's a waste of time for the FAA. So I've decided to obscure N-numbers on aircraft I video, whenever possible, to prevent this TH-cam losers from making trouble.
