Sole Slip examines H class No 263; one of 66 such engines built for the South Eastern & Chatham Railway between 1904-15.
This is an original documentary produced by me and my friends, starring my creations and myself. I required no permission to film on any of the premises featured in this production.

I rode behind this locomotive, and I totally agree about that cab, the wood trim inside is excellent!
I really like your closeup shots of this loco, there's so much incredible painted detail that's best appreciated up close.

It's not wood. It's scumbled paint. Looks like wood grain but its all steel

@@highdownmartin Oh, it is? My mistake - When I got a look around the footplate, I assumed it was just thin woodwork. Was that a typical SECR thing?

Id say it's more of a period decorative technique than something the Chatham did to its engine cabs. It's the only antique engine at the bluebell to have that applied and your certainly not the only person to have seen it as wood. Lots of coaches there have it applied, over wood, but it can make plain boring panels look like varnished raw wood teak or oak or pine or whatever you want check out TH-cam for scumbling tutorials. Quite interesting glad you enjoyed your visit. I'm a fireman there. Been on the H many times

This was one of the two engines running on my visit to the Bluebell a few years ago. (847 the was the other.) :)

I would have ridden behind this engine on the East Grinstead (High Level) service to and from Three Bridges. There was quite a good service on this line in 1964, half hourly I think, and it was shared between the H class push-pull service and standard DEMUs. We used to wait for the steam service if a DMU came in, as the steamer would be next, and we enjoyed riding behind a steam train. I used to use my pocket money to ride these trains with friends from school, favourite trips were to Three Bridges and Rowfant, and Hartfield in the other direction.- the fares must have been pretty cheap then.

Since the Bluebell now connects to East Grinstead, perhaps it's a little more of a home for this beautiful tank engine. But at the same time, with 4 other SECR engines at the railway and a fifth being built, it wouldn't be right for it to move elsewhere. Great video!

The Bluebell Railway has had four tank engines who hailed from the SECR. 263 is not one of those that Stepney mentions in his Railway Series appearance.
