The Delhi Mumbai Expressway is a visionary project of the Government of India that will connect the two largest financial centers of the country, i.e. the national capital New Delhi and the financial capital of India, Mumbai. The eight-lane expressway is the longest expressway globally which can be expanded to twelve lanes depending on the volume of traffic.
The Delhi Mumbai Expressway route is constructed and maintained by NHAI (National Highways Authority of India). The Delhi Mumbai Expressway project is estimated to be completed by December 2023, reducing the travel time between Delhi and Mumbai from 24 to 12 hours.
The Delhi Mumbai Expressway is a 1350 km eight-lane highway that will cut the travel time between two of India's most important cities in half. The foundation stone of the Delhi Mumbai Expressway route was laid by the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on March 9, 2019.
The Mumbai Delhi Expressway route will pass through five states including Haryana (129 km), Rajasthan (373 km), Madhya Pradesh (244 km), Gujarat (426 km) and Maharashtra (171 km). Over 15,000 hectares of land has been used for the construction of the Delhi to Mumbai Expressway in these five states.
The expressway will start from Gurgaon in Haryana and pass through Jaipur and Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan. Later, the route passes through Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh and Vadodara in Gujarat and ends at Mumbai in Maharashtra. The Delhi to Mumbai Expressway will enhance connectivity to financial centers like Jaipur, Ajmer, Kishangarh, Kota, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Bhopal, Ujjain, Ahmedabad, Indore, Surat and Vadodara.
About 8 million tonnes of cement will be used for the entire project. The Delhi Mumbai Expressway Route Map is estimated to generate employment opportunities for thousands of skilled civil engineers and over five lakh personnel for expressway construction.
