    Very helpful, sir, but I would like to know if you can apply brilliant white masonry paint on a bare plaster interior wall? I don't want to apply a top coat and am uncomfortable making a mist coat because I fear getting the water/paint ratio wrong and ruining my new wall.

    • @charlieshooter
      @charlieshooter  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I probably wouldn't do that, as masonry paint is designed more for going straight on to brick or concrete.
      You won't ruin your wall, and if it is fresh plaster then you really should mist coat it. Err on the side of more paint to water ratio if you are worried. Too weak a mix would cause problems....it could go chalky.

    Thank you for the video. So even though it looks a bit patchy, do you only still do one coat of mist paint? Does the patchyiness effect the actual paint you put on top?

    • @charlieshooter
      @charlieshooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, only one mist coat is required. The top coat is thick enough that it won't be affected by any patching, and especially once the 2nd top coat is on.

    Thanks for the clear video! I am repainting a peeling paint wall. I have sanded and filled the area being naughty. Applied my mist coat and first top coat.
    Obviously, my topcoat has overlapped in areas which are "non problematic", but now some of those "non problematic" areas have bubbled, cracked and peeled! (Devastating!)
    Once the paint dries, I could sand, mist, and repaint, but I am worried the same will happen again in new "non problematic" spots when my top coat will touch other bits of the wall.
    It is my inkling that a mist coat was never applied.... Is there any way to finish my job without sanding back the whole wall to the plaster in order to apply a mist coat?? 🤞
    Essentially, it's a rental flat and I just want it to be non peeling for a short while.
    Thanks so much!

      A friend of mine had this many many moons ago where he was trying to paint over a pre-painted wall, and it was like the paint reacted with the paint underneath somehow. It may all need rubbing back a bit and even a mist coat, but maybe try a small bit near the bottom in an inconspicuous area first to see how it takes. The problem is you don't know what the existing paint is.

    • @clairejeff1
      @clairejeff1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@charlieshooter Yes, I fear that it may need all sanding back then a good mist- It's only pure white so it matches. I will try and redoing the patches and if it happens again elsewhere, I may just have to bite it and get sanding!

    Would you always use white for your mist coat? Or would you try and use something close to the top coat colour? Or just no difference?

    • @charlieshooter
      @charlieshooter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd always use white. For a start it's usually cheaper. It will give you a good base to get the top coat looking like it's supposed to. And it helps show up any imperfections.

    Should I use something to seal off the large patches of Easifill prior to painting, or should I just do a mist coat on the entire wall ? I'm thinking if I do the whole wall with mist coat that may help stop any issues with new paint reacting badly with the old paint that was under the paper? Any help appreciated 🙏🙂

      A few people have asked this lately. I'm sure you can use any colour, but a few reasons to use white.
      It's cheaper.
      It helps show up any imperfections in the plaster.
      It gives a good bright base coat to get the top colour on to.

      I used Crown, but any white emulsion watered down will be fine. The cheaper paint the thinner it will be so be mindful of that.

      That could be a bit of damp or it could be the wall surface hadn't been prepped properly. If it has peeled right back to the plaster, try scraping away the paint and rubbing it all back with some sand paper, and then applying a mist coat, followed by two coats of your chosen colour. Try that first and see how you get on.

    • @charlieshooter
      @charlieshooter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you would still use matt paint as a mist coat. It provides a much better surface to paint your chosen colour on too. Silk doesn't soak in to the plaster like matt paint does. Best of luck!

    • @JoeProDecor
      @JoeProDecor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well explained, nice pace...but that mist is far too thin, 50/50 is too much water, especially in what loooks like crown retail matt, it will break the binder down and leave the surface chalky, which is likely to cause problems with the next coats. No paint company suggests that amount of water

      Its not always a problem straight away, but can be at some point in the future when it comes to redecorating.
