Restoring a River: Bringing back the Coonamessett

  • The Coonamessett River in East Falmouth, MA has long been altered by humans, first with mills, and then with cranberry farming. This drastically depleted the historic herring run, from millions of fish per year to around 20-30,000. There are now plans to restore this river by removing the blockages and sand, re-channeling the river, adding woody debris, and allowing the natural wetland seedbank to bring back a healthy wetland ecosystem. This will benefit not only the herring and other fish like Eastern Brook Trout, but also other wetland species such as river otters, turtles and many birds. A corridor of conservation land will provide trail access along the entire river, and kiosks explaining the natural and human history are planned along the way.
    This video describes the history, and hopes for the future of this important Cape Cod river.

    As someone that has lived on Cape Cod since 1958 I am happy to see this taking place.

    I’m struck by the character and commitment of these wonderful people. In this day and age, we are suffering from an insidious creep of “me first and me only” sentiment. These people are working to improve their environment for all to enjoy and for nature to flourish. If only this character were more evident in other parts of America.

      Yeah, interesting that the same "scientist" types who fouled everything up, are now putting themselves "first" as you say, as the "remedy" to what they've done in the first place. Keep in mind that the "trusted science" types are the same "people" who detonated literally thousands of nuclear bombs all over the face of the earth calling it "atmospheric testing," introduced plants and animals that are now called "invasive species" which they now use as an excuse to spew poisons everywhere, invented bio-plagues, and so-on, and have now declared that everything wrong with the planet is supposedly due to "man-made climate change," with you as the supposed saviors! It's funny, (not ha ha, but ironic) but I can remember when the parks "service" ran a program pulling logjams out of rivers... this all reeks of typical government pork. You're not "restoring" anything but your slush-funds.

    In my country's capital most of the rivers and streams are destroyed, covered and turned into roads. And its 2022 and the goverment is still doing it. I hope in the future things will change and all these covered rivers will see the sun's light .

    At 3:32 you can see this weird bulbous field in the bottom left corner of the screen. That is one of the river's original meanders. Imagine this River snaking across the landscape in the longest, slowest path that physics would allow. Maximizing the edge and opportunity for habitat and life.
    That straigh shot we see now? That made by us.

    Am curious about the " Herring ". Jst wondering if these are what we used to call Smelt in SW Otnario. They also used to run in the spring.

    Small rivers can be cleaned from bottom sediments using a motor pump for dirty water and a suction nozzle Bagermaster. A mini dredger consisting of a motor pump and a suction nozzle allows you to deepen small rivers by removing sediment from sand and silt

    • @inocent007
      @inocent007 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That dredger happen to filter gold?

    • @bagermaster-club
      @bagermaster-club ปีที่แล้ว

      @@inocent007 The nozzles filter large stones. And then it depends on the quality of the motor pump.Inexpensive motor pump can wash 100-1000 cubic meters of sand. A good motor pump can wash 5000-10000 cubic meters. sand and stones up to 25 mm in size

      @@inocent007 But I'm working on cleaning up water bodies. I deepen the bottom of rivers and canals. I clean the slipways and piers. I can lift the sand and lay a beautiful beach on the shore

    I remember seeing so many herring run in the stream in my hometown in NJ. That stream was fresh water tasting but tidal in that it wen’t all the way through two ponds to an outfall pipe at the beach. We would snag them with treble hooks. I took some home and my dad who was a seafood meister didn’t know what to do with them. He said they were boney and not worth the work to clean. A friends mom knew how to pickle them and put them in a cream sauce and canned them in mason jars. I never tried to eat any. I kept the family in fish from surf casting and the inlets north and south of my house.

      Herring should be eaten with the bones, they are very flimsy / not even noticeable when eaten 🙂

    Congratulations on the excellent work you ppl do & th results achieved. Giving children a fish to track is sooooo much better than having kids inside watching violent movies, playing violent video games... MAY BE these children will b th 1st generation that would be willing
    to pick up a fishing rod rather than a weapon?.. 🤔
