I am a boho gal so I liked the boho styles and would find different ways to style the bold prints. Each to their own. It's all about wearing what we love and feel amazing in.
Great video Lydia! Of course everyone’s choice of clothing is different but I’ve learnt from you that by picking something more basic or neutral means you’re able to dress it up or down, or change the look by adding a belt or different accessories and that way people don’t realize you’re wearing the same dress!
I don't get all the complaints in this video. If you're a long-time subscriber, you should know her style by now - which would, I assume,be very similar to yours hence you subscribed. If you just came across this video and you dont like it, move along it's not for you. Yes I know freedom of speech blah blah blah you are allowed to disagree and voice it out sure. But she's not holding you hostage or making you pay her your hard earned cash and there's also this thing called freedom of choice. Choose to ignore the video and watch other stylists that suit your style more. My point is - stop with all the negativity. She's not hurting anyone. Just because you are free to say what you want doesn't mean you should.
☝🏼☝🏼 this. Thank you. I like her reasoning and explanations in the critiques. It helps one evaluate pieces in a more critical way. Which is absolutely something we need more of before buying more and more stuff.
I love what you said! I think Lydia is a born stylist and it vibes with how i want to look. And i agree so much with you- if you don’t vibe with Lydia, then move along but stop saying negative comments about her. She is a gem.
This is definitely one of your greatest videos, Lydia! Thank you for showing out these dresses and commenting so clever & detailed on each. I honestly think we havr too many outdated or weirdly designed dresses, especially on sale every year.
I love the combination of bold block colours (bright orange and bright blue especially) - they look so good on me! I used to like muted neutral colours until one day I decided to take photos of all the combinations I could get of my wardrobe and then from those photos I realised how bad I looked in all those neutrals. I guess we really have to understand what works best for our unique selfs. I like Lydia's take on the quality of details, shapes and materials though. But you definitely can curate a minimalist style without giving up on colour 🧡💙
Let me just say I'm old enough to have seen many styles come and go. In general I love your eye for clothes and your criteria for selecting. I don't get your aversion to that gorgeous blue floral dress with the diagonal pattern--to me it looks like a fabulous summer garden party--and the colors are classically Chinese-gorgeous. I also don't get the the long sack over the head--the red one and the white one. Maybe because I'm petite. In my opinion this style would overwhelm most people. That being said, I find most of your picks are really great.
Leopard print is CLASSIC. Never goes out of style and works as a neutral with just about any colour. Spring/summer is so short, why not have fun with color?
Loved the Sezane white Broderie Anglaise dress. Broderie Anglaise is so much classier than the cheap polyester lace seen in the swerve dress! A different technique in the making altogether, it’s never really been out of style since the 19th century! Love your videos Lydia ❤
I think both are lovely, but suited for different seasons and occasions. The white eyelet is wonderful for summer, and the red lace sheath is perfect for holiday season/ winter. Also one can dislike a fabric for oneself but understand that it suits someone else.
@@katyp8503 🙄 I don’t think cheap vs. expensive is necessarily the best rubric. I love eyelet and I have tons of it in my summer wardrobe. I also love lace and have it in both winter and summer wardrobes. Both suit my style and harmonize with my figure and complexion. My child likes lace but doesn’t care for eyelet. However they love eyelet on me because they recognize it suits me. Likewise I have preferences in colors, fabrics and styles that suit me but not someone else. Not everyone is tall and slim with wide shoulders, even though that seems to be the preferred type these days. Fashion trends come and go for both clothing and body types. But it’s more important for an individual to find what suits them regardless of trends.
I admire your fashion sense. Watching your videos now in my mid 40s. I thoroughly enjoyed my younger years wearing prints, florals, full on colors and styles that suited me. It's been a few years since I've started to wear neutral colors and classic styles because personally i cannot tolerate too florally dresses now. I'm treading the thin line between dressing my age and trying not to look older than my age. Classic styles tend to make one look older.
What a refreshing video ❤! Someone with an opinion - who backs up her choice. A lot of thought has gone into the creation of this video. She make it clear that it’s not easy to dress well, it takes thought and effort like everything in life. Keep up the amazing work.
I am deciding to phase out black shoes and accessories. I'm right on the edge of petite, so I think neutrals or lighter colored shoes and accessories suit me better.
Some lovely ideas here. Personally, I think beige and black look better in the duller light of a city. In the tropics or other hot weather places with very bright sunlight, brighter colours or white seem to work best. The caftan you dislike would fit in well in many upscale Caribbean islands, for example. They also look best on a woman with a fuller bust sue to the low-V neckline. Timeless in places like Mustique or St Bart's.
It's all about training the eye. One can like a big floral pattern in the abstract, but not look good with it draped on the body. I agree so much with Lydia's take that fabric should complement the body and not distract.
The big baggie Grandpa Joe striped long sleeve to the floor pajama dress is one that is just silly and not cute imho. Why would someone go out wearing Grandpa Joe’s (from Willy Wonka) pajamas as a dress? 😊
@@LydiaJaneTomlinsonI personally don’t find the oversized structure to clothing that you tend to gravitate toward flattering. I know it’s very trendy right now but I think it does nothing for most body types. If you are petite or curvy, baggy oversized clothing looks really bad. It’s been branded as “classic” and “old money” but I think it’s more of a trend that will not age well. For example, the first white wrap beach dress you like is a little too baggy imo. The pajama stripe blue dress is downright hideous, as well as the one after it. I understand simplicity and letting your own beauty shine through but oversized pieces like this do the opposite. They cover up your figure in the most unflattering way. I’m ready for more fitted, feminine pieces to come back into style. Almost all your choices were either neutral colors or no prints. What about some tasteful florals? Surely not all clothes with prints are seen as gaudy now? Sorry if this is harsh but I completely agree with the OG comment that style is subjective and many of the pieces you disliked are cute to others.
Great video! It would really be nice if you could include styling tips for those of us that are short. It seems most of your recommendations will only look good on someone tall!
I appreciate the way she is wearing, elegant and rich looking, that is something for my reference. She is not perfect in the body shape, but when she puts on the dress, she looks stunning.
Ohhhhh Lydia youjust Proof to me why i follow you. You are the best . No One can came even closer. Shirt dresses are My CUP of tea 😊 i own four. I love your style and your advice. I admire the courage of all influencers because I wouldn't be able to deal with all dislike comments on a daily basis.
I have white dresses and pants, and I have to be aware when I can wear it, having two border collies and a granddaughter so it’s often for going out and not stressing when the dogs are possible with us on holiday.
Also, white, like black, actually does not suit a lot of people's skin tones. Similarly, with those shapeless dresses - it might be cool (and look gorgeous on someone like Lydia), but it does not look good on many body shapes.
Very helpful. I’d like to see more options for different body types as those halter dresses look best on thin people with thin arms. I agree with you on classic/timeless pieces but sometimes it’s fun to have a piece or two that just makes you feel good and shows your personality a bit.
I have struggled with fashion my whole life. Your videos show me how to pick pieces the I love and look great on me. I am petit and curvy (5'2", 123 lbs). I recently went to South of France and want to step up my look. Can you help with details? Jewelry, bags, scarves? Thank you!
I have the same taste. I dont have much money , but you can also dress nice and look stylish on a low budget...i dont buy a lot but i buy nice peaces with good materials...

love, love these WHAT CLOTHES TO AVOID BUYING SERIES, please do more like these one- we all need to live more sustainable, our planet is burning from our overconsumption excesses. thank you LYdia for these videos.
I am definitely an EYELET girl compared to LACE. It just looks more classy and elegant hands down. I think if you want a lace dress you would have to purchase from a very very very high end brand for it to look nice
Hi Lydia. I totally agree with your pieces to avoid buying. I love boho but the style doesn’t have to be full of ruffles, tie dye or bold patterns and bright colours. I love midi and maxi but with muted tones which can be accessorised with an interesting belt, jewellery or bag.Personally, I really dislike any animal prints or synthetic fabrics and far prefer linen and cotton. I think living in a Mediterranean climate as I do,simple, fresh and easy to wear, looser fitting outfits are predominant here.
Lovely video (as always)! I love your style although sometimes it’s a bit too loose/ oversized for me as I am very skinny/ petite so such dresses kinda drown me
Some constructive criticism: I think the title is misleading. You give your personal opinion and preferences, which is perfectly fine. Just call the video "what I will and will not buy this summer". Saying "what to buy and what not buy" evokes the expectation of general advice for everyone and every type like "look out for these materials, avoid these materials" or "question the practicality of this trend" etc. Or even, "let's look at My Summer favorites, what I personally WILL buy and why. Materials, cuts, colours etc" Just differentiate between personal opinions/ favorites (which is fine) and giving general advice without opinions (like "linen is more breathable than polyester"). Both are fine, but may attract different people and evoke different expectations.
Lovely dresses, now I need some shorts options. Can you do a video with some other types outfit options that includes shorts? Love your style and love putting lovely outifts together inspired by your content that makes me feel so good. 🥰
I’m afraid that many of your recommendations would look horrible on me. I’m petite and curvy with a small, narrow bone structure which means most of your suggestions would drown me 😂. I love many of the shapes and details in the “don’t buy” category 😂. My most flattering silhouette always has waist emphasis, so a dress like the second “don’t buy” I would buy and wear for years, regardless of trends. Also I love lace have worn it in many different colors. I have seen lots of your videos, and sometimes your tips make sense, and your style makes sense for you. Nevertheless when it comes to dresses, only a few would look right on my figure (although I would choose different colors). But by all means, “you do you and I’ll do me,” as the saying goes. 😉
Hello Lydia, good video. I enjoyed. I have a question: I have a black shirt dress and I love everything about it, except, these openings at the sides make it too short and I struggle to style it. Would you give me some ideas on how to feel more comfortable using it? I enjoy your content a lot, the only thing I don´t enjoy that much is the amount of clothes you show. It would be the perfect channel for me if it would be more sustainable oriented and I could see you make the most of the pieces you have in your closet. Good work and impeccable taste! Cheers from Chile, South America.
Anything that’s a halter neck with a defined waist is a classic style, meaning it will never go out of style, it can’t be “dated”. Not sure why you’re personally obsessed with hiding your waist line but those of us with hour glass figures have to west things that show our waists, otherwise we look frumpy, and dressing for your body type if never dated. Just because heroine chic chicks can wear billowy mumus doesn’t mean the rest of us normal body types can get sassy with that. Good style isn’t just what’s “in style” it’s what looks good on each body
Interesting video Lydia. I prefer dresses with prints but l do got bored of them after wearing them just a couple of times or so (so I’ll end up buying the same dress but in different colors). It’s not practical and just a waste of money. Thank you for making this video.
That baggy red dress would only look good on a tall woman with very little curves and not on petite women with curves. We would get lost in all the bulk. The dress is nice though and the shade of red is lovely! I really fo like the black halter and the white eyelet shirt dress and the last black tree is also nice!
Also someone like me...slim shoulders and rib cave but large bust. High v necks like thst cling to the bust and make me look like a tent! I also have to wear a bra to ensure my boobs dont sag :( I'd love to wear all these dresses but none of them really suit me. Only v neck or scoop necks, with enough fabric to cover any bra straps. Its hard to buy dresses.
It depends on what you think you can pull off, I guess. Both the donts and dos were equally good and bad. In the donts, the bright turquoise can be pulled off only by certain skin complexion. That red dress in the dos can only be pulled off by someone who wants to hide their body (some people feel secure that way and its ok). Likewise the Olive green off shoulder dress was beautiful in the dos. That floral in the dos, o my God was far too bold and is not for everyone. Striped shirt dress in the dos with button all over looked dangerous. Shirt dresses have the risk of the button popping at any time. I never get them.
Those who like to complain, I’m 72, and I can get some good ideas to stay current, so like what you like and start your own style channel if this is not for you. Great style Lydia!❤
Some of your picks look like hospital gowns - I prefer your picks to your what not to buys but yea, some look just too ballooned out and wide. Its great to look elegant and classic but its also nice to show some shape in your outfits and not be swimming in them. not everyone can pull it off either - some dresses you need to be really tall and thin to have it fall and drape properly. There is no way my mom who is 5'3 can more most of those dresses, her waist which is one of her best features would be lost and she would drown in it!
Hi, Lydia! I’d love to see you style gym to Athleisure wear. I realize you’re not at the stage of running all over the place with kiddos, but I’d love to see how you’d style outfits with nothing but sneakers/trainers:). Thank you!
Those avoids were like the dregs of a website unfiltered 😅. When you're on page 30 and they've reduced multiple times 😂. I fast forwarded those as preaching to the converted here but loved the buys, which were 👌🏿
Not into lace unless it’s more a cotton broderie anglaise, I like a print tea dress but otherwise it’s classic all the way. Can’t bear cheap Lycra stuff
Great comparison video 😊 I always enjoy your videos so much. But a minor comment that came to my mind - you keep repeating that this is „classic”, this is not like, eg. „This dress does not feel classic”. You do not have to be classic all the time. Play with fashion. Classic is framed. Add to your frame some interesting picture 😊 Avoid framing yourself still in one image.
Hmm yes I think perhaps I need to change my phrasing as ‘classic’ to me sort of means multiple things. For example, I think you can have a modern classic piece, or something that is traditional and more of a basic, and that can be called classic too. Perhaps I need to refine that a bit more when I’m explaining!💕
I really like the same dresses you like Lydia, they’re pretty much the style I already wear. I think they’re classic and simple so that you can get a lot of wear out of them. Don’t listen to the naysayers, as you stated, it’s your channel, your style and personal preference. 🤗💕
The concept behind this video could’ve been better presented and understood by many if you had shown a side-by-side comparison of the “don’t buy” and “buy” versions of the dresses. Good examples are the shirt dresses, green and red dresses.
Glad i saw this- I bought a bright orange and purple dress from Mango with cut outs in the sides where the waist is. I keep thinking about it and it is just too bright although it felt pretty good in the store - You have to go with what you feel comfortable and good in!
This video popped in my feed and I think it is disappointing. I expected a more technical view on the do and don't. Your advice feels unhelpful if you don't have your same taste, style or body It is not that I disagree with your taste, it is very classy and trendy, but that I expected to pick some ideas for my own choices I guess it is not that kind of channel?

When choosing a summer dress, the most practical consideration is to be able to wear it with my regular underwear! :)
Floral dresses in summer are timeless. Just choose the right color combination and silhouette and you'll be fine

Saying "what to buy and what not buy" evokes the expectation of general advice for everyone and every type like "look out for these materials, avoid these materials" or "question the practicality of this trend" etc. Or even, "let's look at My Summer favorites, what I personally WILL buy and why. Materials, cuts, colours etc"
Just differentiate between personal opinions/ favorites (which is fine) and giving general advice without opinions (like "linen is more breathable than polyester").
Both are fine, but may attract different people and evoke different expectations.
A very helpful video to help think more critically of each piece we bring into our closet. Thank you!
Much easier to focus on you Lydia standing in front of that part of the wardrobe. Always thoughtful content.
All the don’t buys are things I would never buy. Guess I’m classic and like my clothes simple
Can you share some more summer dresses really loving your recommendations ❤
Great video Lydia. Fantastic tips to build capsule wardrobe ❤
Lovely dresses, now I need some shorts options. Can you do a video with some other types outfit options that includes shorts? Love your style and love putting lovely outifts together inspired by your content that makes me feel so good. 🥰
Your recommendation have so much value!! I really like your consulting!
Hello Lydia love your honesty and taste❤
Gorgeous eyelet dress.
I concur, like how you point out the faults in certain styles & showed us much better options!! 🇨🇦👍💕
Great video ❤ I wanted to ask which earrings would you pair with the siege/green dress from mango?
I agree on all points❤❤❤❤❤❤❤they look old, cheap and odd shapes
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. The next avoid.v buy I would love to see would be summer sandals.
Have a great week and thank you.
Beige, Grey, black, white, cream , ivory, navy
Great tips 🎉 I ❤ your Styling ❤
This was fantastic, Lydia. I got so many great tips! Thank you.
I totally agree floral patterns specially dainty ones look very dated and add years
Anything that’s a halter neck with a defined waist is a classic style, meaning it will never go out of style, it can’t be “dated”.
I agree Lydia; we can do better. Thank you for explaining why certain clothing items don’t work well and why other items do work well. So helpful.
Interesting video Lydia. I prefer dresses with prints but l do got bored of them after wearing them just a couple of times or so (so I’ll end up buying the same dress but in different colors). It’s not practical and just a waste of money. Thank you for making this video.
Yes for example pettit ladys may not go well with the no no pirces
Can you do a video where you choose clothes you recommend from Amazon only? :)
Good choice Lydia, really love it 💯
Lydia what size is your brown flattered hedda bag? Midi or grande?
The Amazon stripe one is huge so size down by 2 at least. I actually changed the buttons to pink shell ones
The long turquoise floral is pretty but a niche dress.
Love the stripped dress def my favorite along with the black dress with the spaghetti straps great video
Although that red is amazing color, the wide fit of that red dress is quite off for me. Otherwise lovely choices!
I’m so entertained by the offended ppl in the comments 🤣
Thw red lace dress feels like the 80s.
I really like the same dresses you like Lydia, they’re pretty much the style I already wear. I think they’re classic and simple so that you can get a lot of wear out of them. Don’t listen to the naysayers, as you stated, it’s your channel, your style and personal preference. 🤗💕
Very good and very useful. Would you do a similar video on shoes and handbags please?!
I LOVE YOUR STYLE!!!!😊
Can you please do a video on lingerie basics? We really need special bras for dresses etc
Really useful video, Lydia!
Just know your style and dress for you body type.
Great video
Where do you get your earrings?
''some boho creeping back in slightly' hahhahahhahha best catchphrase I heard the past year
I love when Brits say twee
The color of those summer dresses looks for fall...??????
The concept behind this video could’ve been better presented and understood by many if you had shown a side-by-side comparison of the “don’t buy” and “buy” versions of the dresses. Good examples are the shirt dresses, green and red dresses.
The dresses were all very different though.
I like this type of vedio ❤
Glad i saw this- I bought a bright orange and purple dress from Mango with cut outs in the sides where the waist is. I keep thinking about it and it is just too bright although it felt pretty good in the store - You have to go with what you feel comfortable and good in!
Spot on.
The ruffle is a dress? Where do hemlines go these days?
That red lace dress was gorgeous to me…not too much…I think it is classic..disagree with love.
This video popped in my feed and I think it is disappointing. I expected a more technical view on the do and don't. Your advice feels unhelpful if you don't have your same taste, style or body
It is not that I disagree with your taste, it is very classy and trendy, but that I expected to pick some ideas for my own choices
I guess it is not that kind of channel?
