Great video and fantastic trees, especially the Sea Foam ones. One thing that would help me as a total beginner is a list of the products needed and where you might get them. Some if I heard right, Sea Foam and rubberised horse hair I have never heard of before. Others I am aware of but not really sure which products to get - such as the foam flock, and the latex. Having watched the video I feel that I could have a go at making trees if I had all the components laid out in front of me. But as it stands I’m a bit overwhelmed, not really sure what I need or where to get it from. I am also intrigued by the £1 per tree - that is very attractive, but I gather that some of the products are going to be expensive to get together so I imagine it is something like £50 but you can make 50 trees.
I was really excited that you were making this tutorial because I've been experimenting with trees over the past week so it's great seeing a new perspective. I think when it comes to making trees you really get out what you put in and I think that's what your tutorial shows this best.
Fantastic, you do a lot of beautiful work. I think this is great standard for quick and easy trees because it shows it's the care and finesse you add that makes a difference. You could use the exact same materials and armatures and without the attention to detail that you add it'd look totally different. Things like ripping up the horse hair and snipping off half the branches and angling them down, re-barking them, cutting into the horse hair so it doesn't wrap around. These are all these things I personally didn't consider, at least not consciously and I think they all really add up.
start using nitrile gloves when you glue, if its you hands that have an allergic reaction. Any chemical you use for a long time can potiantially cause an reation, so better to have good gloves, than keep changing. also, if its your lungs or anything respatory, go see a doctor, then get a good mask. its worth it.
great tutorial, the snapping and twisting of the armatures may look like an easy idea but it is a game changer, you always explain nice simple and effective, your videos are short cause you immediately get to the nitty gritty, love them, thank you
You mentioned dipping the seafoam tree in latex rubber to strengthen it. I'm thinking to do this with my newly made seafoam trees before flocking them. Any advice on how to dip them in the latex rubber?

Great video, I actually did buy a box of sea foam and cost me £25. I tried to stick it to real twigs, but it just didn't work. I never knew about Armatures, so this is great and have now ordered some.

I know it's an older video but would you use a pva/varnish mix on it to really harden it up? And also would that mean you don't *really* need to put the seafoam into latex?
With the spray adhesive....do you need to wait for each application to dry before spraying on another layer? I’ve been having trouble with whiteness showing all over my trees after they are fully dry (when the adhesive is a “clear” adhesive).
Hi, just curious which superglue are you using these days? I've been getting massive allergic reactions that last for days afterwards as long as the model is in the same room. Using gorilla gel.
I sort my 2 ps so that I get the magnetic ones. I use those for the bases. Then I put circles of 3M magnetic vinyl on the wood base so I can remove the trees when I need to.
Well I know this has been out there for a while, but till now I've not needed a really good tree, however for an upcoming game I need a cherry blossom and using this as method I have something really fantastic. Thanks for the know-how
This is a brilliant tip, they are 1 inch washers. you can cram a hell of a lot in the bags as well. £1.99 bags and £2.99 bags. its kind off a pick a mix as well, smaller washers and other bits and bobs
Looking into this a bit, I'm a little jealous. Your British 2p is 7.12 grams and 25.9mm. In US coinage, our nickle is smaller and lighter, dimes are way smaller, quarters are almost as big but thinner and lighter. The only really comparable coin we have is a full dollar.
I know in England we can exchange money at our local post office / bank for American money. Can't you do the same for British money and get yourself some 2p's?
If you live in a place that British people like to visit, and the bank just happens to have them, then sure. It's not particularly practical for every one of our several thousand banks to have large stacks of each of the 180 different currencies being circulated around the globe though. In practical terms, the vast majority of trans-atlantic tourists visit one of two places - New York and California (that's really a shame). The vast majority of my countrymen, myself included, don't live in either of those two places though.
Great video as usual. One thing on a production level though... Every time you lift your arms the white balance goes crazy. All of a sudden you turn into a dead smurf (your skin goes all blue-grey)... Lol... I've never noticed it on any of your other videos, but you might want to double check your camera settings. Still, excellent info, and another job (mostly) well done.
Lukes Aps - Yeah, not worth going back. It's only the bits where you're talking directly to camera. I just wanted to make sure you knew so you didn't wind up with a half dozen videos looking that way. It's not pleasant to watch in a similar way that sitting in a room where the lights flicked on and off every 5 seconds or so would be unpleasant.
Does the "sea foam" ("c-foam?") you're using have some other name? I can't seem to find it online. It looks like some sort of florists' dried plant material...
My experience has been that spray adhesive is synonymous with zero durability. Especially as it pertains to a game piece. Then again, I live in a somewhat hotter climate than you do so maybe it's fine in Brittan?
My guess is that Yacht and Spar Varnish are (functionally, if not literally) the same thing. A high gloss, high durability varnish Honestly, considering how it's being used, I would imagine that most any spray varnish would work.

You can make your own flock by shredding up a car washing sponge and mixing it in with watered down craft paint

The sea foam approach works best, i tend to use Lukes APS three colours of fine foam to give depth from dark to light.
