Keep in mind that Austin wasn't dissing himself. Odd as it is the things he was saying, he is proud of them.... Chest hair, unprotected, etc... His view point is off, but "cool" in his era of originally existing. Late 60s free love.... Just saying. Modern thinking labels these things as disses but in his day, groovy baby. The whole premise of his first movie was him finding out these things aren't cool any more. He lost for sure, but your self diss assessment I find a little off.
Also, Prince wore 40+ versions of that exact same suit and shirt and people are *still* talking about how sexy he was and no one ever gives him flack. ...and he was kind of a jerk.
That was my thought too like I don't think those are disses bc that's just who he is that's what he does so to him that's normal and it was the 60s so it was very popular then
Nah he wasnt dissing himself. You have to remember, he was the sex symbol for his era and he was rightfully proud of those features he brags on. Manly chest hair, and back then nobody but sailors used protection. Free love and all that. He was flexing hard with those lines because it all meant he was beyond sexy and charismatic. The women all wanted him and the men wanted to be him.
He's not dissing himself, British humous employs a healthy dose of self deprecation and little winks to our own foibles. Since every character in this is English, it's on brand for them to make a few cheeky briths style jokes. also we don't really have gold bond here, that's an American product so that's a bit of a fuck up.
Yes! Thank you for pointing out the self-deprecation aspect being a plus for the characters, not a minus. Also, I think the Gold Bond reference works given that while the characters are supposed to all be British, Mike Myers who plays Austin Powers isn't, and the actors who do these rap battles are from the US, so I think it's fair use.
Just so you know, ERB is super chill about people reacting to their stuff. You don't need to edit the video to avoid copyright. I've seen them comment positively on reaction videos in the past.
Interesting isn't it, that for such a randy sex icon with beatlemania level recognition - he gets boundaries and consent better than most? When he's partnered with Mrs Kensington despite their mildly flirtatious banter when she reminds him that Mr Kensington wouldn't like her modeling for Austin, he accepts this with no argument and they continue on. Even when it gets partnered with Miss Kensington and pursues her, he directly asked her if he turns her on, when to his surprise it's a resounding "no" - he does his best to work out the "why" on both sides.
Yes, like the old Timex commercials (which the esteemed Mr. Boyd ought to be old enough to remember) "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking". Great way to turn around the cunning linguist line!
"Why Pussy, aren't you a cunning linguist?" is not just a movie reference - Goldfinger (character name - Pussy Galore) - its a play on the term "cunnilingus", which is why the response about "licking old c*nts" works
Yeah if you look into English "British" slang giving a licking is to beat up someone. And cunt is just another word for a jerk. So he's got a nack for beating up old jerks.
This is the pinnacle of ERB’s production imo. The distinct beats for each character/incarnation and the details like the horns on even just the word “Jeez!” shows real thought and attention
Hard disagree with your assessment of Austin Powers. He lost this battle hands down, but that's more because of the performances of the two Bonds than any short comings on his part.
Yeah I was confused when he said he dissed himself I was like no he’s very proud of his chest hair and the acts he does in the bedroom not a diss at all onto himself

Dude your mind is in a different level. The ability to recall specific moments in a movie you have seen once years ago is freakin crazy. Keep it up man your gunna go far!!!
The blonde hair line was targeted at Daniel Craig dying his hair for the James Bond role. Shockingly the British media had a field day saying things like Daniel Craig's Bond would be the least manly Bond in the series because he dyed his hair bleach blonde and thought it would be a bad look for England to have a blonde James Bond. “It's the movie business, and you've had your six!” I’ve been sleeping on this one for years, I thought this just referred to Connery being in six movies. But it’s also a play on the line from Dr. No "That's a Smith & Wesson, and you've had your six" that Bond says before shooting an assassin.
Good review as usual. One thing I disagree with though. Austin power wasn’t dissing himself. Everything that he was saying that YOU perceive as negative, Austin saw as positive so from his perspective he was dissing Bond.
The line you were thinking of was from Austin Powers in Goldmember. Austin says “you might be a cunning linguist, but I’m a master debator!” As he laughs at his own stupid joke

You didnt really "get" a few of Austin's lines. Especially the two you said he was dissing himself on, he was bragging. He was also saying women like his natural scent, no need for cologne. "All the sex I've ever had: unprotected" is more a thing of his era but also a thing that carries over (slightly) today. Although Peter Dinklage is best known for Game of Thrones (and rightly so I imagine), he did have nice roles in X-Men: Days Of Future Past and Avengers: Infinity War. Was also in a Netflix original recently, I Care A Lot.

This ERB is my favorite because the man who plays Craig's Bond come off as a huge douche here but the actor is the most adorable, shy, soft-spoken hippie in all of the UK :')
I'm surprised you didn't catch the 'Extraordinary gentleman' bar. That's an obvious reference to Connery's last film, "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman". As for the bar, 'I got a knack for licking old c**ts' that's a reference to Monica Bellucci being 50 when she was in the 2015 Bond film, Spectre.
I fail to see how Austin taking pride in his sex appeal and not using protection is a diss to himself. Nothing he's saying directed at himself is meant to point out flaws or diss himself, he's trying to flex. He's a spy from the 60s, and has slept with many women because of his chest hair and all that.
I feel like the Peter Dinklage line was a diss toward AP, because the original actor who played Mini-Me died. But I forget when this battle was released so maybe he hadn't died yet.
Yeah, as has been said taking his character and time-period into mind, austin wasn't dissing himself... however he wasn't hitting with any force either, or often, too much swag not enough pay-off.
Thunderball was made with Roger Moore. The story had a legal loophole and they brought back Connery to star in Never say never again. A movie not needing making. I'm an extraodinary gentleman, refers to Connery's final film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Another film with a backstory and it was a troubled production. Can't blame the man for enjoying his retirement at that point. Die another day was the last Pierce Brosnon film. Madonna was in it.
Twice: It is not dissing himself - its what Austin would do/say. To him, his chest bush was a good thing. The same with unprotected sex. lol So it goes Connery Bond Austin then...way at the back...the Daniel bond.

"That's not my bag, baby!"
dunno how "women throw themselves at me because I am so manly" is a diss to himself in the first place xD

Actually it’s not entirely incorrect - bond was only written in the books to be Scottish AFTER the first Connery movie. Prior to that, he was a dude who lived in London, presumed if not confirmed to be of English descent. The Craig movies though.. I got nothing. Skyfall was literally in Scotland.
The 'Die anyday that you want' could either be referring to 'Tomorrow never dies' and/or 'Die Another Day'.
I was going to comment about Austin Powers, but it looks like everybody else already told you. Lol.
I fail to see how Austin taking pride in his sex appeal and not using protection is a diss to himself. Nothing he's saying directed at himself is meant to point out flaws or diss himself, he's trying to flex. He's a spy from the 60s, and has slept with many women because of his chest hair and all that.
I had to laugh at the line "Get a Bond that's actually English", because the character was Scottish.
yeah as others said i don't think austin powers was dissing himself i think what he was saying is a plus in his opinion the movies would prove that
He is not dissing himself.
I feel like the Peter Dinklage line was a diss toward AP, because the original actor who played Mini-Me died. But I forget when this battle was released so maybe he hadn't died yet.
How have you not done Vader vs Hitler parts1-3 yet classic
I honestly loved the visuals behind Austin Powers.
Twice: It is not dissing himself - its what Austin would do/say.
To him, his chest bush was a good thing. The same with unprotected sex. lol
So it goes Connery Bond
Austin
then...way at the back...the Daniel bond.
Daniel > Austin > Connery
