He explained why, namely that the number of 'what is your source' askers has increased, notably to undermine trust in traditional and legacy journalism.
The problem with the mainstream media is not one of putting out things that are not factually true, it is what mainstream media selects as newsworthy, and worse, what it chooses not to report. A second problem is the mixing of commentary with news. Each night before I watch the news, I already know what the take-away will be depending on which station I am watching. The words that are used to describe a story communicate a commentary. Shocking disclosure as opposed to this person said…. Cold blooded killer as opposed to this person defending himself. It is impossible to discuss race relationships or gender differences without somebody being accused of hate speech or bigotry. The version of “fake news” that the mainstream media practices is only telling one side of the story, or not telling a story at all if it does not pass the political correctness test.

One of my all time favorite Ted talks. When I was in High school, formal debate was considered a core competency skill and therefore successful participation in live debates was mandatory. I am fairly certain that there is not a single extroversion trait to be found in my gene pool, possibly crowded out by the very strong genetic propensity for Generalized Anxiety and Panic Disorder. Active participation in public debate was nothing short of torture for me and I am sure I would have avoided it at any cost had I had that option. I don't know when Public Debate was officially removed from the list of core competencies required to earn a high school diploma but I believe that doing so was a grave mistake and we are already witnessing the first negative consequences. Social platforms have expanded the opportunity to participate in meaningful, public debate for nearly every human alive, while search engines have made it possible to gather mountains of information on any subject, limited only by the individual's internet research skill set. Logic says we should be the most enlightened, least gullible population in recorded history. Why then, do we seem to be actively trying to "devolve" by rejecting well-established fact and generations of accumulated knowledge in favor of base level tribalism, willful ignorance, and a brutal "might makes right" moral code? Fear? Laziness? Stress and Sensory overload? Magnetic pole reversal? CIA mass mind control? Corporate scumbaggery? All it takes for a journalist to lose all credibilty is one lie. How a network handles that situation puts its credibility on the line as well. So when I witness an incident that is clearly a lie, and the network does nothing about it, what am I supposed to think about the network? What if it happens repeatedly and nothing is done? Am I right to think that not only is the network incredibly inept, but has ulterior motives?
I understand where he’s coming from but I cannot just put that much trust in mainstream media. There’s too much bias everywhere. Plus, people with money and agenda are going to be targeting the biggest fish. On top of that, the sensationalism sells more and it’s just a smarter business move to sensationalize news so it’s hard to get anything straight forward. And that doesn’t even cover owners of these news companies saying their journalists aren’t investigators. I find it hard to trust any news source nowadays big or small and it’s feeling more and more dangerous every day I look at headlines.
I'd like a talk on news selection as a process with a set of rules that are published by the news organization. Right now, it's a totally opaque process, which sets the conditions for infowarfare (stories are chosen based on conflict theatrical level, and which promote a producer's favored narrative).
The reason why there is more comment and share on fake news i because it is more interesting and usualy give what people want to hear and that is why i prefer fake news over real news (also i love how trump said fake news)
@3:30 a correction will generally only happen if people cotton into it. It is very easy to push a story knowing that it's fake. If you don't take a chance you don't move forward.
Okay, so I was hoping for an unbiased observation, and I didn't know who this guy was at first. As he talked on and on I kept hearing the little biases in his speech. After reading the comments I realized that he is from MSNBC. Really?! So someone who is part of the problem is going to tell you what the problem is?! It's really sick.
While if you understand his background, his position here is pretty obvious. But one thing I admit I did laugh at was when he described the methodology of only needing two independent sources or one "highly placed" source as rigorous. I'd call that a very low bar to give authority to. I just don't see that being enough corroboration to convince anyone outside of a university setting.
The disadvantage of a biological mind is a foundation based on survival rather than knowledge or reason. We respond most quickly to ideas that reinforce our sense of survival and right--ness, not its merit in relation to facts divorced from anecdotal and subjective experience. Honor thy programming...
If the major news networks seem biased towards liberialism, it could be because reality is biased towards liberialism. Most people in their daily lives have liberal views: do unto others, help the orphans and widows, brother's keeper, cast the first stone.I It is in the matters of politics, business and love relationships that people's ideology suddenly become conservative.
Why do you view 'do unto others, help the orphans and widows, brother's keepers, and cast the first stone' as liberal views? Not only do I, as a conservative, have those views but I also live by them. Maybe, just maybe, those views don't belong to a political party but rather to good people from all walks of life!
nonono. Legitimate journalists so often tell people what they think of what is happening instead of what is happening, labelling, refusing to report, leaving out vital information for understanding, Like "The US attacks Berlin with bombs" if we had had the same kind of journalists in 1944 as we have today. They will then label anyone who points out that it is a war and the germans allies attacked first as racists. That is what we are dealing with now. Thank you, Karl Marx.

Burden of proof is on you for that, cause the man fixed a recession/put people back to work, gave us a wildly popular (nationwide) healthcare framework so that your providers couldn't cheat you anymore the second you got sick after taking your $ for years and years (while simultaneously reducing medical expenses for the state, cause many things that can be tough and expensive to treat later in development are super easy to deal with when caught early, and, of note, he agrees that the subsidy could be higher to help American families), oversaw the complete pwnage + socom style teabagging of Osama Bin Ladin...
And that's sort of the tip of the iceberg. So um... what? This stuff isn't horrible for you. What's your beef with the guy? :U
Isn’t this the CNN guy that said "nothing generally unruly" on air in front of burning buildings during the blm riots in Minneapolis 😂
Great analysis. Good work.
I bet Richard Jewell remained a big fan of mainstream news.
This didn't age well.
this aged incredibly well for people in the US
I understand where he’s coming from but I cannot just put that much trust in mainstream media.
5:00 when Velshi made *serious* typo, nobody accused him of lying. Says everyone knew it was his fingers
15:15 Sometimes it's just your eyeballs that you need
to see is to believe
I'd like a talk on news selection as a process with a set of rules that are published by the news organization.
Right now, it's a totally opaque process, which sets the conditions for infowarfare (stories are chosen based on conflict theatrical level, and which promote a producer's favored narrative).
Careful. You might get called a conspiracy theorist spittin those kind of facts.
5:30 Gets upset at people asking for his source!!! LOL
The reason why there is more comment and share on fake news i because it is more interesting and usualy give what people want to hear and that is why i prefer fake news over real news (also i love how trump said fake news)
Stop right there. I'm a journalist and I question my sources sources which can lead to uncovering lies and mistakes and trust me Gannett makes many!
Thanks for upnote...
"Can lead to uncovering...." may be an operative term here.
I ask you: "Then What?"
"Alternative Facts" is not a news thing; it is however, a law thing. And, Kelly Anne is a lawyer.
@3:30 a correction will generally only happen if people cotton into it. It is very easy to push a story knowing that it's fake. If you don't take a chance you don't move forward.
What are his sources for all of this?
The war on fake news is an attack on critical thinking.
0:15 “ I only get my news from reliable sources” lol “sources that check vigorously
Blame postmodern thought!
15:30 unverified source
I read the coments , there is not hope for humanity with those people.
8:45 instead we are debating absolute nonsense
6:45 “danger of asking ‘real’ journalists for sources LOL
16:30 ****People will stop trusting you….”everywhere I’ve worked has of checking*****
2 minutes was just too much.
Nice research
9:25 "...we report from an ivory tower..." "I get it, it's flawed
He reports for NBC! Credibility shredded.
Gabriel Camarena what credibility? Stop listening to the alt-right. There’s more sources of news than American media.
Nah. Not my facts!
Best wishes
Great analysis, thank you Ali. Keep up the good work.
If the major news networks seem biased towards liberialism, it could be because reality is biased towards liberialism. Most people in their daily lives have liberal views: do unto others, help the orphans and widows, brother's keeper, cast the first stone.I
It is in the matters of politics, business and love relationships that people's ideology suddenly become conservative.
Why do you view 'do unto others, help the orphans and widows, brother's keepers, and cast the first stone' as liberal views? Not only do I, as a conservative, have those views but I also live by them. Maybe, just maybe, those views don't belong to a political party but rather to good people from all walks of life!
"What is truth?" - Pilate
This guy is the poster boy for fake news
Cheers to Musk & free speech! 👍🇺🇸🥳
One of the most important videos right now
Brillant
3:00 did he just say satire in too large quantity is fake news?
17:55 *****JFC. THATS WHAT HAPPENED
It is hard to give the BBCant weight it lies by omission.
Maybe you guys shouldn't promote specific agendas so transparently. Maybe you shouldn't lie so much. That would help.
3:10 if cnn had made mistake would have been corrected quickly and would have apologized lol
I thought George Michael is still alive....Gd Mandela effect!!!
Oh this is rich
He asks "Who then is going to be there to hold power to account?" Well, it certainly isn't going to be NBC or CNN. Barack Obama could do no wrong.
Gabriel Camarena you’re listening to too much alt-right fake news, deliberately served to you, because you won’t search other news sources around the world.
15:30 "The fact is there are fact-checking sites out there"
you can not accurately assess this question with the exclusion of one's world views- and will never be understood correctly in isolation. but will be purported as being assessed fully and understood fully.therein lays the true meaning of fake
Odd when Ali is the perpetrator of fake news routinely, from his university days to his professional paid liar days as well. Nov 23 2023 🎆
He didn’t acknowledge the reasons why people are losing faith in traditional media. He did acknowledge a Reporter refusing to ask the tough questions because they want the guest to return. He didn’t acknowledge a media outlet refusing to run a story Because it would upset the share holders. He did acknowledge that the owner of the media outlet has the final say on what is newsworthy and not the reporter. He did not acknowledge that corporations are so rich and the System is so corrupt they can purchase the media outlets to control the narrative.
What about astroturf and propaganda? Also that the CBC is now privately funded...who profits?
If Pizza Gate is "fake" then explain the emails
You cant be that naive. You Need To Fact Check What You Say.
Haha you waited couple minutes there to expose your anti western bias. Times changed, we no longer trust 'experts' like you, these days we only trust our friends. And to know whos my friend i listen to my gut feeling, not 'smart' guy's elaborations. I feel Trump is my friend as he shares similar values i do, and of course every politician and journalist is biased these days, but doesn't it make sense to support someone whos bias is in your favour?
The irony is that the negative comments are EXACTLY the problem that this guy is talking about
Who decides what is fake and real? What criteria? Bias or critical thinking?
Maybe you should turn on your critical thinking skills and not believe everything you see on CNN, MSNBC or Vox.
