I'm just now looking back at this video that I posted over 4 years ago! I appreciate the feedback and I want everyone to know that this is a teaching lab for the high school students. if I'm remembering correctly, this was one of the first times these two students had been in charge of all the children on their own. This is why I'm not interrupting their lesson. I gave them feedback and they had to reflect on how the lesson went. Both of my children have gone through our lab school and my oldest (Emma in this video) is a straight A student and my youngest is thriving. as a teacher, you would know that one 4 minute video doesn't give you a real idea of what is happening in the classroom. But I think it's great my video has been assigned to watch for college classes. Thanks for the feedback.

Thank you for this, Jennifer! I am using this video this week in a graduate class in psychological tests and measurements for future school psychologists. There is one child in particular whose behavior lends itself well to partial- and whole-interval time sampling and frequency counting. Thank you for courageously extending yourself. You are contributing to the training of technically savvy professionals. Dr. Wayne

I'm watching this video for an observational assignment for graduate school. It's really interesting how the students got the kids to connect the different experiences with apples, taste, purpose, the sound of the word, etc.

Thank you for sharing this video. Given that this wasn't a great day for your student-teachers (or their students), your decision to share is both brave and helpful because it lets others learn from your mistakes. After watching this video, anyone who has taught kindergarten before will likely reflect on some form of mistake that they themselves made and strive to be better for it =) Thanks again! and good luck to you.

This is a great video to use as a teaching guide.

My first observation is that both teachers are not at the children's level, I would suggest sitting on teach chairs that are at the children's height. I noticed that circle area board was to far from the circle time carpet, placing them closer together will help keep their attention. The children are on top of each other, I would have them sit on the bubbles on the carpet to have them spaced out, with a teacher sitting across from each other. The teachers have the children waiting for their presentation, the children are getting fussy waiting. Preparing a theme song, a theme book, having a theme item for each child to hold (ex. cut out apple each child painted the day before that they pasted onto a popsicle stick) have the children wash their hands one by one and pass out fresh apple slices for them to taste, have all the items to make homemade applesauce with a poster of the recipe with the pictures of the items needed and the steps, etc.) When one of the teachers is trying to get Emma's attention, she is trying to from across the room, I would suggest she walks over to Hannah in a calm way, and bend over or squat to her level and speak with her. when asking for a helper, comment only on what you want to see, like who ever is sitting quietly, with their hand raised. and praise the first child you see doing it.
Overall I see they need some guidance and tools to have a successful enjoyable circle time.

When the teacher who is speaking, went for an object the other one turn her back to the class. Also I think that each child should have their own object for tasting.

absolutely no one should have turned their back, but there was about 10 other students and myself standing behind the camera. the children were supervised the whole time.

Can I please use this video embedded in a presentation to get early childhood teachers thinking about the language skills children are learning in activities. It is supposed to be a not so good example, but I would of course explain that these are high school students and still learning how children develop. I would be very kind in my explanation as they don't deserve to be bullied just because there are things they could have done better. Thanks kindly

Just seeing this now. Yes, that's fine. It was a learning experience for the girls in charge and some of them have gone on to be amazing teachers.

Anybody who watches this should realize that these girls are high school students in a child development class. I do share this video to my high school ECE students to critique how to communicate with preschoolers. We are focusing on "getting on their level". Thanks for sharing this video.

Okay where is this school... I would NOT want my child in this classroom. The teachers are stading children heads are tilted up the entire time. Teachers shoul be sitting with students. If your going to do a apple project - then use real apples - the kids tossed the plastic Apple, well I may have done the same. I don't know what state this school is at but the teacher mentions TIME OUT. Those teachers need a time out ( which should not be allowed! How sad

Teachers were not prepared. Lost the children's interest. A lot of good exploration and expansion opportunities missed. One teacher leaning on a cabinet with arms folded. Both teachers having to stop to redirect the children several times. Could have gone in a better direction.

This is how NOT to conduct a lesson with young children. Nice effort, but the teacher needs to be on eye level with the children and should have had them tastes real apples.

I agree, as someone who was instructed to watch this video for a graduate class, this has got to be either a joke, a pre-planned horrible teaching re-enactment, or just the worst example of classroom education and management I have ever seen.
