  • This is an aerial view of WAAY-TV (Huntsville, Alabama TV Station) meteorologist Gary Dobb's home. It was taken two days after the massive EF-5 tornado tore through his home and leveled it, along with a famous restaurant-Oh'Bryans located in Mount Hope, Alabama. Gary was on the air live describing the tornado as it was bearing down on his home. You can listen to a replay of that TV broadcast here:

Gary was describing the tornado coming over the mountain while restaurant employees (the restaurant Oh'Bryans is next door to his house) huddled in his storm shelter behind the home. As Gary calmly explains to viewers he can seek shelter a few feet away, he proceeds on telling details of the storm. The reality is he has to walk from the front porch through the house, out the back door, and down the back yard to the storm shelter underground. He did not make it to the shelter when the tornado hit. In fact, he only made it to the living room and the house exploded. He found himself in the back yard after the tornado hit the home and threw him out. He also had to assist getting those people in his storm shelter out because a wall from his home had blocked the entrance to the storm shelter. This was the story relayed to me by several local people that lived near him. Notice the restaurant beside the home is totally wiped clean from the tornado. If employees had taken shelter in the restaurant, they might not have survived. Video shot by Rex Free on May 30, 2011 and provided to the public by him, Alabama State Trooper Pilot Lonnie Burns, and Alabama State Representative Ken Johnson.
