Remains of a CCC Camp in the Cades Cove Loop-Great Smokey Mountains National Park.
History has a way of talking to us and we ignore it. Every April and May in Cades Cove, the site of a large CCC camp ran in the 1930's, steps us back in time. The men that were in the camp, planted buttercups in their time there and spelled out their Company unit of the CCC camp stationed in Cades Cove. The locals in Knoxville, Tennessee know this well, and visit it every year to take pictures. The average tourist coming through has no idea. If you love history, this is sure to put a smile on your face. Some 80-90 years ago, they are showing you what they did on this earth.

Mount Crammer Fire Tower-Great Smokies Mountains National Park
มุมมอง 1874 หลายเดือนก่อน
Of all the places I have been to all over the U.S., including Alaska, this view stands out in my mind and cannot be erased. If you pick a good day, you will be rewarded with an incredible view, and go back in time at this wonderful historic place. This journey was taken in October of 2014.
Silver Comet Bicycle Trail-Brushy Mountain Tunnel Passage
มุมมอง 504 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is one of the many highlights on the Silver Comet Bicycle Trail. Once a railroad, now converted to a paved path for bicycles. In October of 2017, we travelled this journey from Jacksonville, Alabama to Rockmart, Georgia, tent camped overnight and came back. The trail is called the Chief Ladiga trail on the Alabama side. It is an amazing tunnel. Wonderful experience among many on this trail...
Alum Cave Trail-GSMNP-One of the Most Dangerous Points on the Trail

Walking Alum Cave Trail in the Great Smokey Mountains can be dangerous, depending on the weather. This point is where there is not a lot of room for error, especially if it is snow or ice coated.

Katabatic Winds Generated Off Of A Waterfall
มุมมอง 36312 ปีที่แล้ว
I am no scientist here, but from my adventures kayaking in Alaska near glaciers, I learned a lot about katabatic winds. I got to see this again one morning in the south one hot summer day in July. It was pretty strange to see and witness. Dead calm conditions, hot and humid all around us. In the canyon at the base of the waterfall, winds were churning near the base of the falls and out in front...
Burgess Falls

This is Burgess Falls at Burgess State Park near Cookeville, Tennessee, U.S.A. This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Southern United States I have ever seen. It is like a mini South America when you are the base of the falls and looking up. It is one of Tennessee's BEST kept secrets in my book! There are two more waterfalls at this Burgess State Park that you can see along your 3/...
View from Shuckstack Fire Tower-Great Smokey Mountains National Park
มุมมอง 27512 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a "head camera" view from Shuckstack Fire Tower in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. The view looks south at Fontana Lake and then over to the east. The abandoned forest tower is at over 4,000 feet above sea level and you are looking some 2,000 feet down to Fontana Lake. The tower is located just a short piece up from the Appalachian Trail. The tower is no longer kept up with ma...
Kayaking across Fontana Lake into the Great Smokey Mountains National Park

This is a view from a kayaker's perspective of what it looks like paddling across Fontana Lake in North Carolina. With U.S. Forest Service land from where we launch to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park in the direction we are headed. This is some of the most scenic, non-commercialized area of the Smokies. I have visited this area every year for the last 10 years.
Liberty Bowl 1982 (Illinois vs Alabama) and Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's Last Game
มุมมอง 170K12 ปีที่แล้ว
I apologize that this video is out of context from an "outdoor and severe weather channel", but I had to post this for the college football fans. With such a football legend as Paul Bear Bryant was to college football, I thought I would share this for his fans. In 1984, I was a videographer at a television station. I don't even consider myself a football fan, but I was asked to cover this bowl ...
Wall Cloud Trying to Form a Funnel
มุมมอง 10012 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a classic wall cloud shot on March 2, 2012 in Moulton, Alabama. You are looking Northeast. I am at the back of the storm watching it. To the casual person with no storm spotter training, they would call this in as a tornado on the ground. I am so far away that it could indeed be a funnel cloud about to become a tornado. Absolutely no rotation was observed of this for some 15 minutes of ...
100 Yard Dash on Sipsey River in Bankhead National Forest-Alabama
มุมมอง 12K12 ปีที่แล้ว
This is what is called the "100 Yard Dash" along a section of the Sipsey River in Bankhead National Forest in Northern Alabama. The water level you are seeing in this video is 1.5 feet listed at the Sipsey River Recreation Area Bridge or the put in point. This is a standard 11 mile or so float trip that has been done by hundreds and hundreds of people over the years. The take out point is at Al...

They shipped boys far away from home so they couldn't run away. Just more of the body snatcher evils.

my husband and I canoed the sipsey a few years ago and I made him let us take out and walk around that part. I didn't think there was enough water and was scared to chance it. It was so hard draging that canoe of the bank. I don't think we found the right spot to walk around it so it about killed us.

There are no guides operating in the National Forest that I am aware of. You can link up with the Huntsville Canoe Club or possibly the Birmingham Canoe Club and attend when they go on this trip. Check their websites and their "trip schedules". Other than that, you pretty much have to go at it on your own or with friends. Hope this helps!

TH-cam will not let me post web site links! Go to Alabama Whitewater on the internet and you want to look for flow page. They have several useful links.

Yes, By far, the best way to check is two web sites. The "guage" is kind of old school, since the government only monitors flow rate. The "old guage" is located on the new bridge, and the only way to see it, is to stop in the middle of the old bridge beside it at the Sipsey Rec area, and look down to your right on the new bridge support at water level.

Drove up there Monday to scout out the take out location and check the water level. I didn't see where the water level was posted, but noticed a few trucks parked that were kayaking. Thought about riding up for a day on the water April 1st, just not sure about the water. Any suggestions...
