      It’s difficult to call any movie with Billy Crystal in it a romantic comedy. You forget all about the romantic half. He is incapable of playing it straight. Everything is a set up for the next joke and he can make anything funny. If you haven’t watched it yet, Running Scared is another great Billy Crystal movie.

    I think my favorite line in this movie has to be "You made a woman meow?", which is even funnier when you see that there was a kid waiting to use Billy Crystal's batting cage. That was not a child friendly conversation. This movie and Sleepless in Seattle are the reason why I pay more attention to a movie's soundtrack. The song choices in both movies is amazing.

    • @adnap
      @adnap ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, the arguing between Harry and the kid and the insults back and forth, only to have him turn around and say, “where was I?”

    This is a favorite movie of mine because of how well everything works together. It feels a lot more "real" than most Rom-Coms, with awkward friendships, and time passing. I loved the humor throughout, the banter between the characters, and the little couple interviews were so charming ♥ If you want to see more Billy Crystal in a similar feeling comedy, you guys should watch "Forget Paris". Another favorite movie 😊~Caroline

    Loved watching this film with you two! You did a great job with this one! I love this film and it really speaks to me. Harry is a depressive with a self-proclaimed "dark side" and Sally is OCD and has a thing with control. I relate a lot to both of them. This film hits me in such a personal way and it means more and more to me as I get older. I watched this film on New Years Eve 2019. Last film I saw in the 2010s. I watched it with my then girlfriend. My first serious girlfriend. I chose to watch this film with her for 4 reasons: 1) She had never seen it and was interested. 2) It's a great film to watch on New Years. 3) The films says things about how I feel about relationships and how I see myself and I wanted her to get that. 4) I thought it would possibly lead to us sleeping together for the first time. Sorry if this is TMI but it did. Wink. That was how I spent my last night of the 2010s and my last night before 2020. Better times. So this film makes me feel a lot of things every time.

    Can we take a moment to appreciate the genius of Harry Connick, Jr.? (He is totally handsome and charming.) He was recognized as a child prodigy. He started playing in public by age five. Performed a duet with Eubie Blake at the Royal Orleans Esplanade a few years later. He studied with Ellis Marsalis and won multiple competitions in New Orleans. (Still a child.) He not only sang all these gorgeous classic songs for "When Harry Met Sally." A gifted piano virtuoso, he wrote all of the arrangements and produced this "Double Platinum" bestselling album soundtrack. He won a Grammy Award for Best Male Jazz Performance of the Year. And he did all of this at the tender age of twenty two! Quite the astoundingly gifted musician.

    I agree that the restaurant scene overshadows the rest of the movie. Personally my favorite line in the movie is when Harry tell Jess "put your name in your books" because my husband always writes his name in his books. In his case it's not in case we divorce he started doing it as a kid so his brother wouldn't take his books but it made me laugh and I teased him about it.

    23:20 "Auld Lang Syne" literally means "old long since", but it might be better to think of it as "times long past", like you talk (fondly) about memories. You're meant to be singing it at midnight of January 1st to bid farewell to the previous year and welcome the new one.

    Favorite couple story -- my grandpa, before leaving to ride the rails during the Depression, told my grandmother, "I'll be back and when I am, I'm going to marry you." Her answer was "Oh you will, will you?"He came back a few years later, they got married.
    .
    "Favorite" break-up lines: "I hope I didn't ruin your weekend" and "I never said how long forever would be".

    I think the strength of this story is in the fact that both are 3-dimensional characters that undergo growth without one serving as a MacGuffin for the other (unlike Sleepless in Seattle). Apparently the "Mr. Zero" scene at the football game is a rejected SNL sketch that they worked into this movie. Basically, I think it was Crystal when he was on the show but can't recall 100%, he wanted a scene where two friends would be talking about something dramatic like that, but they get caught up doing something ridiculous and never break character. Hence, talking about his wife leaving him while doing the wave. It's such a perfect bit, I can't believe it got rejected at SNL.

    This is one of my favorite RomCom films of all time. If you have not already watched it, I would recommend "City Slickers" with Billy Crystal & Bruno Kirby
