It's easy to fall under the spell of this movie if you don't like rom-coms because this one is the epitome of what a GOOD rom-com is/could be/should be. Too many of them try to force the story, to have the couple fall for each other in a matter of days, but on this one they were not afraid to use time jumps to show you how they started out as acquaintances, moved slowly into friendship, and then they spent a long time *in* that friendship and letting us see the two of them be friends and get truly close. This is the way a well-written story makes the difference.
I love that it wasn’t a love at first sight or like you said how typical rom coms have them fall in love in a few days. I really love the friendship aspect of it, plus the comedy was top tier
At 13:52 Meg Ryan looks at the director and laughs for real bc Billy Crystal improvised the funny voice bit and she didn’t know if she was really supposed to start talking like that 😂
For another absolutely classic romantic comedy, check out Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), starring Hugh Grant in a very early role, and arguably the one that launched his movie career. Also with a stacked cast of British actors.
3:27, I've worked in restaurants before and I every time I hear this order I think "You are practically guaranteeing that your food will never be what you wanted"
I just found your channel and I loved your reaction to this movie!!! This is one of my favorites and so many reactors don't laugh as much as you did and I don't know why - this movie is HILARIOUS. Anyway, loved your reaction and can't wait to watch more of your content.
Love this movie so much. Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby as the besties are as much of a reason for this iconic films success as Meg and Billy. I’m not much for romcoms either but when it’s such a well made movie with a GREAT cast - it transcends genre. And SUCH a perfect representation of a particular time in NYC❤❤❤
The key is compromise and forgiveness. A good relationship cannot be all about you - it has to be about the other person, too, and that third person that is created by your union, that self that is two selves together. The push and pull is essential along with the willingness to engage in it with curiosity and without rancor.

This is such a wonderful movie. Very sweet. 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed it too. So, Nia, it's been several months, have you watched Casablanca yet? 😉 Thanks for sharing this one!
It's amazing that you were able to call everything so clearly, immediately after your first viewing! This is a wonderfully insightful analysis, Nia. You nailed it!
If you go the restaurant where they filmed the scene where Sally was faking, you'll see on that table a plaque: "When Harry Met Sally. I'll have what she's having".
My parents were born 4 days apart in the same hospital. They didn't go to the same elem or middle school, but they met, on their own, during high school. Their 60th anniversary is coming up in three weeks!!!
It's all their conversations coming to a forefront ... 1. "Men & women can't be friends because the sex part gets in the way" ... the initial drive all they did was bicker and when they arrive in NY, they go their separate ways. 2. Then they meet five years later, on the plane ... He says about how long does he have to hold someone after sex (His look after they had sex). 3. At the deli, faking orgasm and she says "You're out the door." (the next morning, she wakes up to see him getting dressed). 4. At the dinner, when they both said it was a mistake (Now they're questioning their friendship but starting to realize they actually have feelings for each other). 5. He calls to apologize and to follow up "if you don't have someone next New Year's Eve, you've got a date." (after their fight at the wedding & they finally talk on the phone and she says "I'm not your consolation prize." 6. Ends at New Year's Eve when he realizes he loves her and races to find her before the stroke at Midnight and as it turns into New Year's, he professes his love. Why Nora Ephron was one of the best writers when it came to dialogue in her movies. Her next one, ironically also starring Meg Ryan was "Sleepless In Seattle" (my all time favorite) & then Meg and Tom teamed up for Nora's last big movie, "You've Got Mail." This is the movie that officially launched the "Rom-Com" genre ... as you were saying ... you either have movies that were about romance or that were strictly slapstick comedy. The humor was more mature and sometimes you had to see the cadence and the surrounding. The conversation between Harry & Jess at the football game as he's telling Jess about Helen & him and at the "punchline" which is a punch to Harry's gut it's time for where they are sitting to do the wave. You shouldn't laugh at Harry's misery but it's the contradiction that even though he throws out "I didn't want to ruin your birthday," they still both get up and do the wave! And yes, men & women can be friends and not have sex ... I am a gay man, I have plenty of female friends & I have never slept with a woman in my life and never had the desire to do so! LOL
The OG of rom-coms, i had forgotten how good it is. Maybe the other movie it can come close to it is Sleepless in Seattle, with Meg Ryan as well, highly recommended btw, and a more modern suggestion, still a classic rom-com, would be You've got mail. Better to go into those reactions not knowing or reading about them, you enjoy them better like that.
Hi, Nia! You've been missed. Not only is this movie filled with winning performances, the script is absolutely wonderful! It's not a typically lightweight rom-com with telegraphed jokes and interchangeable stock characters - it's got more...heft. Also, no one (with the possible exception of Helen) is painted as all bad or all good. And as you say, the fact that it takes its time building their relationship on what feel like earned moments makes a huge difference when you finally reach the payoff. (Can you tell I love this movie? lol)
If you don't like romcoms check out the Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight trilogy its more realistic and one of the best trilogies in film.
What's funny is that I'm like this too when I make things... I like things on the side, and I don't like things soggy. That's why I don't order out. I eat 99% of my food at home. I hardly eat out. I think I can make things much better, too 😜
Yes, 100% true about men and women being friends. If they are both single and the man finds the woman to be attractive, he can never just be friends, despite what he may say. He will always want to sleep with "his friend".
Because if a guy enjoys the company of friendship with a woman he is attracted to, feelings are bound to arise, and then she will become too attractive for him to stay neutral on the romance question -- either it's mutual or the friendship/buddies won't ever work

Are you really shocked at her having fantasies at 12? Im genuinely curious, bc when this came out, no one, male or female, batted an eye at that line, but watching people react now, it gets a lot of shocked/uncomfortable comments. Most girls have started their period by then, myself and my bestie started at 11. By 12 and definitely 13 we had crushes on rock stars and actors. We'd had sex ed in school and/or the talk from a parent. We knew what srx was and were growing breasts and having periods. Its perfectly normal for a 12 or 13 year old girl to think about sex. I think the problem is the worry that men will take this fact, if its publicly stated, to mean that THINKING about sex means girls that age are READY for sex, which theyre certainly not. But being curious and having sexual fantasies is normal at 12. Anyway, just some thoughts, no offense meant, its just youre the 3rd reactor ive seen have an issue with that line so i wanted to explore it a bit.

Hot Take Fact: The scene where we see all four lead characters talking to each other individually on various telephones took sixty takes to nail. NFL Enthusiast Fact: The footage from the football game was the New York Giants vs Detroit Lions from October 16, 1988. The New York Giants won 30-10. Location Location Fact: The orgasm scene was filmed at Katz's Deli, an actual restaurant on New York's E. Houston Street. The table at which the scene was filmed now has a "Where Harry Met Sally ...Hope You Have What She Had!" plaque. That's Hot Fact: For the infamous fake orgasm scene, the original script called for Harry and Sally to merely talk about women faking an orgasm, until Meg Ryan suggested that Sally actually fake an orgasm at the table. Director Rob Reiner loved the idea and put it into the script. In a November 2, 2004 interview with NPR, writer Nora Ephron credited Meg Ryan not only with the idea of faking an orgasm in the famous restaurant scene, but also with the idea of setting it in a restaurant in the first place.
Girl, if you never saw this movie, let alone heard of it; you aren't old!! Lol. That scene in the diner is famous, and for years after this movie, people imitated that crazy voice. And for better or worse, that's also me ordering at a restaurant, and also me crying at the end. 🙂 ❤ 😉
Nope, women and men can't just be friends. I worked with a woman who looked closely to you. We were co-workers, but I did want to date her, but she had a boyfriend at the time. I saw her years later with another guy, but I still looked right into her eyes, and I think she knew I still liked her. P.S. I wondered why your ring finger was not sparkling. You seem very nice.
They basically proved it, can't just be friends if you're single and attracted to one another. I'm a 40 year old man who agrees with the theory. I've had female friends in my life, but the friendships have never lasted long.
No, it's not true that men and women can't be friends. Really. I have lots of women friends. Most of the guys I know have women friends. Most of the women I know have male friends. I wouldn't want someone in my life (man or woman) who couldn't be friends with someone of the opposite sex. The actress who said "I'll have what she's having" was Estelle Reiner, director Rob Reiner's mother. The couples in the interviews were originally supposed to be real-life couples (except for Harry and Sally, of course). Rob Reiner filmed a bunch of interviews, but didn't like how they came out. So he hired professional actors and re-shot the interviews using the dialogue from the originals. The redone interviews came across as very realistic, IMO. Like you, I don't like most rom-coms. A lot of them are formulaic and superficial, and I don't like how the men are often portrayed as fantasy figures instead of as real people. But I do like When Harry Met Sally. Other good ones, in my opinion, include Roman Holiday, The Shop Around the Corner, The Apartment (this one is more of a rom than a com), Amélie, and Enough Said. Maybe you could do reactions to one or more of those. And, yes, you should definitely watch Casablanca.
