@@zbarsky You're comparing a home version (OR2006) to its arcade counterpart (OR2). That's how 99% of home ports of arcade games where designed, going all the way back to the 80's. Arcade versions were always harder because that's how the companies made their money, by making you constantly put money in to the machine. Home versions were designed to be more forgiving because 'easier' games actually have higher replay value i.e. less frustration = you play the game more. Find any game that has both an arcade and home version. Go into the arcade games test menu (bios) and turn the difficulty all the way up, now compare that to the home version, again with the difficulty as high as it can go. The arcade version will be far harder than the home version. That's also why you would see a lot of the Japanese SHMUP arcade games when they were released on the Saturn/Playstation, they had an 'Arcade mode' This would sometimes put the game in TATE mode, but would always increase the difficulty to replicate the arcade difficulty.

I've always thought the handling in the original was really good and way better than any other 2D racer of that type. It feels to me how a road car would. While they went with the drifting mechanic in OutRun 2, it sounds like they nailed the handling they wanted as well which is so important for a good racing game, realistic or arcade style.
Outside of the occasional Kart racer, where you have to play over and over to progress or unlock tracks and characters, OutRun 2 is easily my most played racing game ever. Honestly, I can't think of another racing game that even comes close, this game has been the one to beat since it was released, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
Love the outrun series, I was saying over on a PCN livestream the leap the original made in the arcades back in the early 80's is still something I remember being in awe of and probably why I have such a like for all things outrun, i love the arcade driving cabinets, I still own an upright Virtua racing cab and have almost every outrun game on each console they came out on, I also love the "cannonball" updated pc version (been playing it on my rg405v this morning). This game's release date killed it. In 2006 folks were in any other stile than arcade point to point race... we were playing majorly Mario Kart clones, GT-likes, Underground 2 copies and, in way smaller groups, doing some PC simulators. If this game were released during 1994-1995 or after 2018 (specially after 2018) it would have being a success...probably not a console seller, but probably a comfortable million+ hit outselling games as Horizon Chase Turbo among nostalgia dudes.
Thankfully the game had (excellent) console ports by Sumo Digital, they even released the game on PS3 and 360 digitally but sadly both versions are no longer available (you can still find the ISOs on the internet though).
A lot of games from this era have aged poorly but OutRun2 has this perfect blend of realism and stylized aesthetics that keeps it timelessly beautiful, like a classic automobile.

@@VideoGameEsoterica Now that's an interesting thought. OutRun without Ferraris. I don't know that I *wouldn't* care, but I think I'd rather have OR3 without Ferrari than no OR3.
Yes I have been playing outrun 2 in the arcade and of course when it released on OG Xbox. Me and my friends have been playing 8 player lan on Xbox and it is rivaled to the Daytona USA 8 player sit down in the arcades. The only thing that would make the arcade linberg version would be to have the Euro Mix Version of the three iconic songs. I love the original soundtrack but the “Euro mix” imo sounds much much better and has a way of pumping up the adrenaline in the race. Try and listen to the euro mix version and race in outrun 2😊.
I adore OR2 as well, but my fave racers have to be NFS:Underground 1&2, I know they are not quite the same thing in terms of classic arcade racers, but nothing has made me feel the sense of speed and being on the road as NFSU, that said, I would hate to lose either one of them. My fave version of OR2, is the Japanese version on the OGXB, which I like to emulate in 1440p on my Sony CRT monitor, along with DSD audio.
I should check out the emulation of this Been enjoying the PS2, Xbox and the HD version in the PS3 I actually enjoy playing this with an arcade stick 😂
I absolutely LOVE all Outrun 2 SP versions. I still play the PC version (2006) all the time. I still haven't had a chance to try the new community updates for it. Kinda makes me want to grab a Lindbergh! I've had my eye on them for a bit, but never actually picked one up. Still holding out hope that I can grab a Superscaler game at some point, so I haven't bought any Sega arcade games yet. :D People always make fun of me for playing this game so much, and like to cite all their more SIM-y and modern pseudo-arcade style racers, but as you just stated, this one just makes you feel like you're actually racing. Most other racing games don't. I always respond with, "your xxxx racing sim feels nothing like me driving my '99 Carrera" so I'll go back to Outrun. :D (minus all the drifting (I only drift my car when it's raining at low speeds. Takes a lot to break it loose when it's dry.. :D ))
only discovered this a few years back and i hated it for a long time because i didn't 'get' the handling and thought it was crap compared to ridge racer, but one day i retried it and it clicked, now it's a real favorite. Just like Konami's seminal 1990 hit Over Drive.. you know, you should cover that some time..
Outrun2 is just fantastic, I wasn't a big fun of the OG but the 2nd game is just pure joy! I know the arcade games are a dying genre but the unforgivable thing SEGA did is neglecting these arcade franchises and the studios they made them! SEGA is just not the same to me without AM2 and Hitmaker games! Who in their right mind put AM2 to just niche arcade games for just the Japanese market!?!
I love Outrun 2, it's the first 3D sega arcade racer which actually played well. All 3D sega racing games before this handled awfully, no idea why Daytona, Sega Rally, Scud Race and F355 Challenge were so popular in their day. None of them played well compared to the likes of Ridge Racer, Rave racer, Dirt Dash, etc, but Outrun 2 is where they first started getting the feel right.
@VideoGameEsoterica cars drifting on their own as soon as you start turning, rather than initiating it yourself? Scripted crash animations rather than it actually reacting properly to making contact with other cars? Both of which were a staple for early 3D sega racing games, all garbage as a result. 🙂 Outrun 2 still had the shitty crash animations, but at least sega learned and it handled properly for a change. It's by far my favourite sega arcade game, but only because the rest were so bad. Still much happier playing one of Namco's offerings.

No one knows SEGA has been sued for Intellectual property infringement because the game we know as "OutRun 2" is a stylish knock off from a prototype made by a defunct indie studio. SEGA waited for that studio to go bankrupt and then decided to essentially copy 85% of the gameplay and style while wrapping it in a nicer looking nicer finished SEGA game in the end. Like you OutRun 2 is still one of my favorite game and it's gameplay never gets old 🚗💨💨💨💨💨💨💨💨
I can think of a negative. SEGA's insistence on the Ferrari license keeps this thing from being released, updated, follow up. It's the Achilles' heel. If they would just get over that minor, unimportant, detail....

did you say it was running on a Pentium with an nVidia chip? I always thought it was amusing playing the game on OGxbox (pentium chip) and seeing all the AMD billboards, but it's even funnier if the arcade board was pentium based as well 🤣
I must agree that this game is really awesome. In my PC the framerate speeds up considerably from time to time, even when using DgVoodoo as wrapper. I wanna point out however that in your review you didn't even mention the songs "Risky RIde" and "Shinny World". That's horrible and innacceptable. 😂😂😂

It’s interesting how the music differed between versions
OutRun2 SP Special Tours for PS2
Another fun version
Agree with you that Outrun has the best drifting for arcade game but I would still rank Ridge Racer 6 and 7 over it overall.
That’s fair. Everyone gets their opinions :)
Best games of this gen:
PS2: VF4
Gamecube: F-zero GX
Xbox: Outrun 2
Sega was on fire with this gen
It was really the end of the golden era for them
@ True
I adore OR2 as well, but my fave racers have to be NFS:Underground 1&2, I know they are not quite the same thing in terms of classic arcade racers, but nothing has made me feel the sense of speed and being on the road as NFSU, that said, I would hate to lose either one of them. My fave version of OR2, is the Japanese version on the OGXB, which I like to emulate in 1440p on my Sony CRT monitor, along with DSD audio.
I feel the same for the OG Thrill Drive
I have trouble getting it to even boot in Tekno Parrot
I have the PC version with patches though
Odd it won’t boot
I know it's a weirdly named file put I boot or try to and nothing.
Anyone think Sega still has it in them to make something close to this today?
I like to think so
Playing Outrun 2 is pure rapture! 🤩
It doesn’t get better than OutRun 2
I should check out the emulation of this
Been enjoying the PS2, Xbox and the HD version in the PS3
I actually enjoy playing this with an arcade stick 😂
Def give it a shot
Yes this game is awesome, for some reason need for speed hot pursuit remastered mechanics feels very similar
Haven’t played that one in forever. I’ll have to
100% agree Sega are number 1
Always have been’
I absolutely LOVE all Outrun 2 SP versions. :D
People always make fun of me for playing this game so much, and like to cite all their more SIM-y and modern pseudo-arcade style racers, but as you just stated, this one just makes you feel like you're actually racing. :D ))
Gotta try the new updates. So worth it
I agree!
As one should haha
only discovered this a few years back and i hated it for a long time because i didn't 'get' the handling and thought it was crap compared to ridge racer, but one day i retried it and it clicked, now it's a real favorite. Just like Konami's seminal 1990 hit Over Drive.. you know, you should cover that some time..
Once you get the drift down you mention Over Drive 🤣
How does SDX graphically differ from the other versions?
Slightly more impressive visuals and a bit poppier gamma
How do the XBOX and PS2 home versions compare?
Both great ports but compared to this they don’t look or perform as well
Outrun 2 is imo the best arcade racer ever!
Clearly I agree haha
Sega are king. Outrun games are awesome 👌
The most fun you can have in an arcade racing game IMO
It's a shame that this revision of OutRun 2 never got ported to consoles...
Maybe one day
It's called Outrun 2 Arcade online (PS360)
Outrun 2006 is this plus other stuff.
For me there really isn’t a bad arcade OutRun
Facts!
The ultimate fact
Are you playing this on PC? I still own 2 physical copies of the Xbox Outrun games. I was obsessed with the game back in the day.
PC. I have it on Xbox as well
I love Outrun 2, it's the first 3D sega arcade racer which actually played well.
What?? That’s crazy talk lol
@VideoGameEsoterica cars drifting on their own as soon as you start turning, rather than initiating it yourself? Scripted crash animations rather than it actually reacting properly to making contact with other cars? Both of which were a staple for early 3D sega racing games, all garbage as a result. 🙂
Outrun 2 still had the shitty crash animations, but at least sega learned and it handled properly for a change. It's by far my favourite sega arcade game, but only because the rest were so bad. Still much happier playing one of Namco's offerings.
We may get it in a Yakuza game someday..
Fingers crossed
doesn't count
How do u play this in Teknoparrot or cbxr chiro ?
I’ll do a tutorial soon
The only complaint I have, and I know a lot will disagree here, is the drifting. I'm just not too into that style of play.
That’s fair. Everyone gets their opinion. But yet I think most would def disagree haha
is the PS3 version on par with the arcade version?
Arcade is still the best
@@VideoGameEsotericait is fun to link up multiple ps3s though and play multiplayer. I play 3 player with all my friends with Logitech ffb wheels.
the 40th anniversary... and that makes me feel oh so very very old... isn't too far away, so we can still hope
and if not then there's always the 50th anniversary if world war 3 hasn't wiped us out
It’s the water wars that will get us haha. And I live on the shores of one of the world’s largest lakes. I could hit a driver and an iron and have a golf ball floating 🤣
Business negative not design negative but yes it hampers the series
@@VideoGameEsoterica Fair
agreed 10/10 on all fronts
And you know what is even better?
an 8 port network switch
8 network cables
8 tv's or monitors
8 xboxes
8 Japanese version outrun2 installed on it
have at least 7 friends over
Make history
And absolutely no excuses. Just make it happen. you can hook up an xbox to any monitor tv
15khz 31khz , hdmi
you can even yse 360's (I only tested with 8 og xbox though)
I am still shocked that so few people have this set up.
I need seven friends though
I wish I knew 5 others to join me in such a project :) I have 3 setups and 2 friends who would join.... so I am ready!
@@nattila7713 you have to do it yourself
xbox are 20, monitors are on the side of the road everywhere,. So for 100 you'de have the xboxes. perhaps 10-20 fo the network switch. The monotirs/tv's you can get for free
did you say it was running on a Pentium with an nVidia chip? I always thought it was amusing playing the game on OGxbox (pentium chip) and seeing all the AMD billboards, but it's even funnier if the arcade board was pentium based as well 🤣
Lindberg was diff
I must agree that this game is really awesome. In my PC the framerate speeds up considerably from time to time, even when using DgVoodoo as wrapper. I wanna point out however that in your review you didn't even mention the songs "Risky RIde" and "Shinny World". That's horrible and innacceptable. 😂😂😂
Haha can’t mention them all
So I guess theses games are not on Xbox series ps5 or Steam
They are not
Arcade perfection *mwa* 😘👌
Chefs kiss level of good
nah best racing ost is Sonic R for second place Sega touing
Haha oh really?
Two minutes???
-More like twenty.
OutRun 2 is easily best game on XBOX if you ask me.
I still get depressed when thinking of OutRun Online Arcade that availability was removed completedly on XBOX 360 & PS3.
Twenty? Seconds?
i wish we get arcade footage "in the background" how it actually looked back then... and not this cheap upscaled footage :/
whats next? 4k saturn? 2xSAL filtered snes? :(
pleeeease...... ;)
What?
this game is so old by now but i don't even consider it a retro game, it's just one of my all-time classics!
It’s wild to think how old it really is
Amazing game no doubt but calling "the Best Arcade Game Ever Made by Sega"?
All its about perspective, for me Sega Rally 2 is the best, better of any version of OutRun 2, another guy could said that is Daytona 2 or the OG Daytona how knows, the only thing that everyone will be agreed is that SEGA WAS THE KING of arcade racing games since ever
We all get to pick our favorites :)
🤨 a perfect arcade racing game? Okay, I'd strongly disagree but okay...
I said perfect!
@VideoGameEsoterica yes you did, subjectively I'd still disagree but I can see why you like it so much...but I still can't agree
It’s fine :) like I said nobody has to agree. I just wouldn’t believe anyone if they said it was a “bad games
@@VideoGameEsoterica yeah I know, I'm just being a Namco fanboy messing you...👍🏽😅
Name a perfect game on anything, I will wait. 😂
2 minutes! Sir! How dare you!?
I can do it in a minute flat. The rest of you are just too slow.
I love playing OutRun 2 on PSP. A third entry would be wonderful. Until then, I'll just play the extra track on Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing Transformed. Not the same thing, but it feels new.
🤣 finally someone references the joke
Is the footage an emulator or a port?
It’s an emulator, called Teknoparrot.
Neither really. It’s a pc executable running on pc
More of a translation layer
