  • This historic film shows the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt on a port o' call visit to New York City during the early 1950s, probably 1950 or 51 as the film does not mention the Korean Conflict. The ship at this time was commanded by Capt. George W. Anderson, Jr. who is shown with Admiral John Towers at the 1:44 mark. Planes carrier aboard include A-1 Skyraiders, F-4U Corsairs (including radar pod carrying Corsairs), Panther jets and Banshees. At the 4:45 mark, the ship is seen on maneuvers in the Mediterranean with planes being spotted and launched.
USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB/CVA/CV-42) was the second of three Midway class aircraft carriers. To her crew, she was known as the "Swanky Franky," "Foo-De-Roo," or "Rosie," with the last nickname probably the most popular. Roosevelt spent most of her active deployed career operating in the Mediterranean Sea as part of the United States Sixth Fleet. The ship was decommissioned in 1977 and was scrapped shortly afterward.

My father served on this ship. I was on her last leg of her last cruise. My dad got to pick seven men to fly from Rota Spain and gather up 40 boys and meet the ship in Norfolk VA. The Nimitz was birthed next to Rosie. As we backed out I looked up to the flight deck of the Nimitz and my dad said that the future. It was sad that the Roosevelt was heading to the scrapyard. Four days later we arrived at Mayport naval station FL. I got to hang out with the ship’s photographer and was given a camera and I took a few all over the ship. Me. Chapman was a good man. My dads friend Rudy took me to the guys and showed my how the ship worked. My dads job was AIMD he was a A4 Skyhawk mechanic for a while then moved into the office. This was an experience I will never forget. I was 13.

Too bad they didn't film below deck. Would love to see engine rooms, etc. in "new" condition. By the time I served (63-65) she was well worn. Loved my time on board.
