- Although slavery had ended, this did not mean that black Americans were entirely free. The Supreme Court's decision in the Plessy v. Ferguson case legally allowed "separate but equal" practices. But African Americans were anything but treated equally in the Jim Crow South.

yeah . its unfathomable to me to think of myself ever having that much hate in my heart towards other groups of people. You have to be really messed up and have no morals to think like that, and a special type of evil to act on it. Im black btw , but i feel like people in my generation of african american kids (im 21) we take for granted the lives we freely can live now. Im glad they have mlk day because its just an incredible reminder at least to me, of how differently we could be living and a reminder this wasnt even very long ago at all . dr king and everybody who participated in the civil rights movement are truly heroes in my opinion.

I remember being stopped by the police in Beverly Hills in the 90's. After being handcuffed, made to sit on the sidewalk while they illegally went through my vehicle, I was let go, but not before being threatened that if I was seen over there again I would be taken to jail. I remember the officer telling me, we don't like your kind before sending me on my way.

My Life as a child in the fifties. My best friend in the whole wide world was Mark Abraham we were both 9 years old my first induction into hatred was at the city park pool it cost $0.20 to get into the pool for the day and we pinched our pennies throughout the year to have four shiny Roosevelt dimes when we arrived at the entrance there was a huge sign that said no coloreds allowed he pleaded with me and told me it's okay go in enjoy yourself they had a huge 15 chain link fence around the pool I jumped in the water and came out I seen him on the other side of that fence it had such a profound effect on me I never swam again he's gone now we were friends for over 50 years friends that you have a nice life you can count on one hand if you have a true one it's on one finger love you more
That pool meant more than that so called friendship regardless of his pleading. A REAL FRIEND would never entered the pool if it didn’t allow that other friend entrance. But you are from a generation that didn’t think that deeply as well as today. I didn’t get anything out your story than....Swimming in that Pool meant more to you than walking away with your so called friend.

Slavery in the United-States was a moral blight. I do not understand that Segregation took place when Slavery was abolished, the Blacks could vote. Segregation is a separation. This is an awful thing to do to separate people. It is one thing to separate on your own, it is another when imposed. America insulted God in so many ways. Repentance is the thing to do

Could vote only in theory. They implemented enough laws to keep Former slaves out of the elections. For example you had to prove you can read or write otherwise no voting right. If you could prove that your grand father had the voting right then you were excempt. Guess who couldnt possibly have a grand father with voting right. Less than 1 percent of AfroAmericans actually voted due to these measures.

You know, where Black Americans voluntarily choose to live amongst themselves. Traditionally speaking, Black Americans are Pan-African separatists.

We have a law erected in 1964. The year before I was born.
It is still not an Amendment to constitution of the United States.
Neither is the ERA, which was the Egual Rights Amendment of the late 70's and 80's.
The desegregation and voting act among blacks still stand as long as the Supreme Court agrees, but there is no standing Constitutional guarantee, because it's only written as an Act, not either a full Constitutional Right.
And that’s why Shelby County v. Holder resulted in one of those protections becoming defunct.

The abolition of slavery in North America wasn’t won because of human rights. It was fought because the North was industrial and they the Yankees considered slavery was an unfair practice, not to black people but, unfair to the white peoples living in the North of the country. Since they couldn’t make all the moneys the South was making out of the slavery trade and out of slave work. The North was sending many warnings asking the South to stop the practice because it was very unfair to them in the North having to pay salaries and training to employees in their different industries... Whereas the slaves didn’t need to learn English first to start working on agriculture and farms since that was the same work they knew to do and were doing in Africa, they were able to begin working right away... Pops was born in 1949 Southern California. He said that the white kids were allowed to use the city pool first, then the minorities second. My grandpa was born in Arizona in 1912. He told me he would read signs from store or restaurant windows that said. Absolutely no Mexicans Indians or blacks allowed.

Despite how wrong that people thought these laws were you can't help but admire the prestine condition of parks, streets and all other places of business before desegregation. When you see the photos of before then five years up until today of these places it makes you wonder why people at the time had things segregated or must have had insight as to what would happen if others were allowed in. We can't be blind to not realize today why they thought that way.

13th Amendment (1865):
The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. It was enacted in the aftermath of the American Civil War to address the institution of slavery and ensure the emancipation of enslaved individuals.
14th Amendment (1868):
The 14th Amendment is one of the Reconstruction Amendments and addresses citizenship rights and equal protection under the law. It grants citizenship to all individuals born or naturalized in the United States, including former slaves. The amendment also provides equal protection of the laws to all citizens and prohibits states from denying anyone life, liberty, or property without due process of law.
15th Amendment (1870):
The 15th Amendment prohibits the federal and state governments from denying a citizen the right to vote based on their race, color, or previous condition of servitude. It aimed to protect and enshrine the voting rights of African American men and ensure their political participation following the Civil War.
Civil Rights Act of 1964:
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is landmark legislation that prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It was enacted to address racial segregation and discrimination, particularly in public accommodations, employment, and education. The act also established the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to enforce its provisions.
Voting Rights Act of 1965:
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was enacted to address discriminatory practices that prevented African Americans and other minorities from exercising their right to vote. It aimed to eliminate barriers such as literacy tests, poll taxes, and other discriminatory voting practices employed by some states. The act provided federal oversight and enforcement to protect voting rights, particularly in states with a history of voting discrimination.
Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965:
The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, also known as the Hart-Celler Act, abolished the national origins quota system that heavily favored immigrants from Western Europe. It replaced the system with a new one based on family reunification and professional skills. The act aimed to address the discriminatory nature of the previous immigration policy. It allowed for more widespread immigration from Africa, Asia, Latin America, etc.
Fair Housing Act of 1968:
The Fair Housing Act is a federal law that prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, or disability. It was enacted to address widespread housing discrimination, including redlining and racial segregation. The act made it illegal to refuse to sell or rent housing, impose different terms or conditions, or engage in discriminatory practices in the housing market.
Affirmative Action Executive Orders:
Affirmative Action refers to policies that aim to promote equal opportunity and address historical inequalities, particularly in employment and education. Several executive orders, including Executive Order 10925 (issued by President Kennedy) and Executive Order 11246 (issued by President Johnson), established affirmative action as a policy. These orders required government contractors and federal agencies to take affirmative steps to ensure equal employment opportunities and promote diversity.
On the state level, 41 out of the 50 contiguous states have affirmative action policies.
Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act (2022):
The Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act is a federal law named after Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy who was brutally murdered in 1955. The act designates lynching as a federal hate crime and establishes penalties for those convicted of such acts. It aims to address the historical violence and terror inflicted upon African Americans through lynching and promote justice and deterrence.
@@robertshipley6990 Have you been to Booneville, Kentucky? West Virginia? Have you been to anywhere in Appalachia lately? White people with little to no economic mobility and are abusing drugs, particularly meth and opioids. Not every Black person lives in the hood, or is out there gangbanging.
I live in a community of predominantly upwardly mobile Black people of all backgrounds (Black Americans, Jamaicans, Haitians, etc.) Black unemployment is the lowest it’s ever been and enrollment in higher education continues to increase. Considering all the awful things this country has done to try and keep black people from achieving prosperity, yes I say we’ve made progress, but there’s more work to be done.
Look up redlining and learn something. Years of government sanctioned discrimination is costly.

The term "redlining" ... comes from the development by the New Deal, by the federal government of maps of every metropolitan area in the country. Those maps were color-coded by first the Home Owners Loan Corp. and then the Federal Housing Administration and then adopted by the Veterans Administration, and these color codes were designed to indicate where it was safe to insure mortgages. And anywhere where African-Americans lived, anywhere where African-Americans lived nearby were colored red to indicate to appraisers that these neighborhoods were too risky to insure mortgages.
New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, all have a history of restrictive racial covenants that prevented (or made it extremely difficult) for Black people (and other racial minorities to a lesser extent) to buy homes in certain neighborhoods, even if they were fully qualified as their White counterparts. Even in places where there weren’t any comprehensive Jim Crow Laws, de facto segregation was still upheld through methods such as this. When you divide neighborhoods like this it allows the government to be selective in where and how much economic investment they are willing to put into those neighborhoods to ensure its development.
The Post World War II Boom (with the help of the GI Bill) helped to create the American middle class. It was enacted by Congress in 1944, and it sent more than eight million World War II veterans to school between 1945 and 1956. It also backed home loans, gave veterans a year of unemployment benefits, and provided for veterans' medical care.
The bill was a huge success, propelling Americans to new heights of education and helping to fuel the economic prosperity that characterized the postwar era, but once again many Black Americans were excluded.
Although the GI Bill was written to be race-neutral, private banks in individual states were responsible for administering it. As expected, the Jim Crow South made sure to exclude a lot of Black veterans (approximately 1 million, if not more). We’re talking about lost opportunities for wealth and mobility for many generations here. Although redlining by race was officially made illegal in 1968 with the Fair Housing Act, lending agencies are still being put on notice for discriminatory practices. Redlining itself costed Black American families $212,000 in personal wealth. That’s (partly) the reason why Black America is still behind as far as wealth accumulation goes. There are other cultural factors at the moment too, but to deny what segregation and redlining has done to Black communities in terms of equal access to resources would be disingenuous.
@@robertshipley6990It depends on the HBCU. If I did college over again and I had to pick a few HBCUS to consider from, I’d choose between Howard or Morehouse. If you’re a young black woman, Spelman is pretty good with a graduation rate of over 75%.
As to funding, HBCUs cannot legally bar any race/ethnicity from attending today. Historically Black colleges were established because prospective Black college students were banned from attending pre-dominantly White institutions (PWIs). I don’t know what “free money” you speak of. Do you ask the same question to PWI institutions who receive federal and state funding? Why is the onus of full self-sufficiency on one set of institutions and not the other? The only ones who don’t receive federal aid as far as I know are private Christian colleges/universities. “Elite” institutions such as Harvard and Yale get “free money” or “handouts” from alumni and other donors all the time, yet I don’t see you complaining about that, and they still get federal dollars.
But imo, all institutions that market themselves as being open to the public should receive equal funding.
In 1969 alabama I started going to school with white kids, I didn't know what to expect as a 10 year old, but all seemed ok, I struck up a friendship with a white kid named michael and we loved talking about sports and other things kids talked about. I remember him asking me if I asking me if I wanted to come to his house to spend the night and said I'd have to ask my mom, I remember my mom saying sure but the next day he was disappointed to tell me his parents said no, I didn't understand it but as I'm now a grown man I do, we remained friends anyway.

The only problem is that it was never “equal”. It was about making sure that one side always had an advantage, with the other side receiving unequal or inferior services, facilities, education, etc.
Remember that black people (even with the low wage jobs that were afforded to them) were still paying taxes. They were still legally “citizens” paying into a system that denied them access to the same resources their White counterparts had.
The government was not going to ensure that anything was truly “equal”. Segregation wasn’t just about making sure white and black people did not make contact (with limited exceptions) It was legalized white supremacy. White people would ensure that they get theirs at the expense of everyone else.
Integration (while it has its flaws and struggles) was the first step to addressing that inequality. Minority or no minority, no one should tolerate second class treatment in the land of their birth. Anything less violates the 14th Amendment. I would highly encourage black people today to take full advantage of everything this country offers to build up our communities and to practice group economics, similar to how other immigrant communities do when they come here.

You’re ignoring the fact that today the Democratic Party and people who self identify as Democrats believe in more socially progressive ideals. Most self identifying Democrats support universal health care, business regulation, taxing incredibly wealthy individuals and businesses at higher than current rate, prison reform, and some form of government funded college equivalent. These are minority and working class issues, and therefore Black issues. It takes a major leap to bring up something 140 years ago and act like nothing’s changed. For example: if I can go into debt because of the high cost of healthcare, and the ability to pay that debt is not protected in the event that my need of said healthcare arises, then either my ability to pay for healthcare needs to be protected should I need it or the access to healthcare should not require the ability to pay for it.

Yes, Asians also have a history of discrimination in the US (see the Chinese Exclusion Act) but there were also times in history where they received the status of “honorary whites”.
