You're right. Bruce is an experienced pilot and for years (during their world tours) he flew a Boeing 747 nicknamed "Ed One Force". This song is about the first all-aerial battle, the Battle of Britain during WWII. The mentioned ME-109s are, of course, aircraft of the German Air Force, the Luftwaffe.
