Michael Landon was a very good actor, I saw him in a bonanza and I have now discovered this movie and it is great, I already knew how to ride a horse before the bonanza, he has been one of the great actors and anyone who does not see him like this is out of envy or jealousy
my father worked as a grip on little house on the prairie, highway to heaven and other productions he said you would never know Michael was an actor because he treated everyone in the same nice manner and would genuinely be interested in speaking with everyone from the cast and crew
That young man with Mike was also in Bonanza, they really did follow Mike everywhere ❤❤❤ actually quite a few of these actors were also in bonanza. ❤❤❤
I remember singing this song with my father driving across the African bush, No radio in the car so we had to entertain ourselves, we must have heard it on the house wireless set. must have been 59 or 60.
It was a pretty good movie and Michael Landon was an awesome cowboy hero. He could easily have been a big screen star. Glad he didn't go that route! 💞 Btw- it was a great song! I 😉
Until today, I was only familiar with the song, “Tom Dooley” by the Kingston Trio (my dad’s all-time favorite band, with The Beatles following as a close 2nd)…not realizing it was about a movie/story. I learned about the movie after watching a biography on Michael Landon. I also didn’t realize “Michael Landon” was his stage name.
Thanks for posting the movie. Unfortunately the story in the movie doesn’t match the actual true story of Tom Dula, on which the song is based. Nevertheless, a good showing for Michael Landon! Wikipedia has a good telling of the real story, search for “Tom Dula”. (“Dula” is pronounced “Dooley” by the Appalachian hill folks of North Carolina, where the real events took place.) There was speculation at the time that Tom Dula didn’t actually commit the crime, but was covering for one of his lovers in the complicated love quadrangle he found himself in. That’s what motivated a poem that became the famous song.
Never Never seen this before so it was nice to watch thank you very much for posting it. I see there were a number of people in the film that are also in bonanza. The lovely lady who played Mrs Finch in the episode of The Auld Sod and the guy who played Seth in the episode Quality of Mercy. Michael was a very good actor.
Yes. Quite a few of the actors ML worked with in his early days would end up guest starring kn Bonanza and even LHOP.. Rod Cameron from that Trackdown episode Helane posted , guest starred in S9 - the 2 parter about the pony express ( title escapes me at the moment). 🤔😉
My dad used to sing that song to me all the time is name was William Henry my name is peanut born in Glenn county Brunswick my dad's nickname was BC and I've always loved that song hang down your head Tom Dooley❤
I'm a CNA in a nursing home and one of my residents had it on the TV we were having a slow day so I watched it ! It's an awesome movie! I'm only 52 so if it wasn't for him I would have never seen this movie it actually brought tears to my eyes! I never realized it was based on a true story!
I had not heard of this film before or the story it was based upon but it was enjoyable though if you watch enough westerns the idea of fighting after the war has ended is not a new concept, see The Undefeated 1969, so their treatment in this film seems a little harsh. Michael Landon stars who would go onto a successful acting and singing career with support from Richard Rust who was very memorable in Underworld USA the Samuel Fuller film and Jo Morrow from Our Man in Havana.
It's crazy cause this is my great great great uncle. His great grandfather married my aunt Harriet. That didn't like that he (alfred) wasn't racist at all and kept trying to chase her off her in Lenoir. They ended up having allot of mixed kids and to keep us from knowing we are related to those people who changed their name to Dooley to separate from the black ansestors.. our last names are dula in my mom's side. Whole family from Caldwell county. I never knew about him until I got on anestory and seen his story. Found all kinds of links and stories and also a haunted house haunted by him in Statesville I think... Yeah.. I just hope Uncle Tom is elevating in the spirit realm for good. I don't agree with anything he did to the woman etc but it's pretty interesting having ansestors who's actually famous and got songs etc and forever will be apart of history tbh. No racism. All love Tom.!
Not at all. Just a young guy in love, caught up in the end of the Civil War. He didn't want to hurt anyone. He was really a tragic hero just like the song says 😢❤
This movie is total BS. Dooley was a drummer boy in the rebel army because he was a good musician, he was not in the Calvary. He was taken prisoner for the duation of the war and went back home. When he got home he started back up with his love triange with two sisters, one had syphilis by then and gave it to him. Unknown to Dooley he then banged the other sister and gave it to her. He thinks the 2nd sister gave it to him, not the other sister who originally gave it to him. So he plotted the murder of the second sister, promising to elope with her. So she rode off with him to elope and he stabbed her in the heart. This was the first sensationalized "Three way love triangle relationship/murder" in the U.S. press. This would be a great remake for Hollywood to produce today with the real story. Dooley was a real piece of work..
I don't know about your Tom Dooley - which wouldn't have made for a very interesting movie. But this one was based on the popular song, sung by The Kingston Trio. The song actually came 1st and the screenplay was written after

Saw this at Movie Theatre (NZ) in 1959....when it was released...and always remembered parts of it - especially the song.
Beautiful movie! Thank you!
