Back in the olden days, European explorers and Roman poets didn't think black swans exist. So a black swan was something impossible in their eyes. They even made a whole expression about it.
But then they discovered black swans.
And Black Swan events came to mean something unexpected and impactful, but not entirely impossible. 9/11, WW1, the fall of the Soviet Union are all considered Black Swan events.
But there's more out there than just black swans. Here Be Dragons . . . .
    Enjoy!

This was wonderfully informative and concise. It was the perfect pace, with the right mix between animation and the narrator's face. I'm happy to know about black swans and grey rhinos, but even more happy to have found this channel. :)

I always learn a lot from this channel. In an effort to return the favor, here's a cheat sheet for classical plurals. Many other words with the same endings follow these same patterns:
Singular phenomenon, plural phenomena (3:30 in the video)
    Singular bacterium, plural bacteria
    Singular vertebra, plural vertebrae
    Singular parenthesis, plural parentheses
    Singular vertex, plural vertices
    Singular fungus, plural fungi
Naturally there are exceptions (e.g., stigma / stigmata), but this covers most of the classical plurals that show up in scientific and mathematical contexts.

I love language and learning idiosyncrasies, but in my opinion, those that have imported words in to English over the centuries should have done a better job with grammer consistency. English is already unpredictable enough due to its base of two distinct language stocks (Anglo-Saxon and Norman French).
What I believe we should have done over the years is, import the needed root word of foreign origin, but apply all of our own grammatical rules, like affixes and plurals.
That way, we would have the benefit of the new word that we lacked, but we would still have a predictable way of using the word.
I think the same should also be done with spelling. We should either pronounce the word the way the other language did (probably not going to happen due to languages using phonemes unfamiliar to eachother), or update the borrowed word's spelling to match our comfortable pronunciation.
It's only recently that I learned that the confusing silent letter is some words like "psycology' were never meant to be confusing. The 'p' is pronounced in Greek (where we got the word) , but in English, it feels awkward to our sensibilities to pronounce 'ps' at the beginning of a word (though, it doesn't hurt our feelings to say it at the end of a word, like 'collaps').
Another fun one is the word 'vigilante' that we borrowed from Spanish without any change in spelling. In Spanish, it's pronounced 'beeheelantay': totally different.
      Anyways. Enough with the rant.
I do appreciate your educational efforts, and while something is a standard, people ought to know it. So thanks.

  • @oldplucker1
    @oldplucker1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

There are very few actual black swan events. Most events are ‘ Flashing Glitter-ball Elephant’ events. It is just that those in power are too stupid to recognise them.
The Millennium Bug was not a Red Swan either. It was a ‘Multi flashing herd of glitter-ball elephants’ event that was dealt with correctly by IT staff and plenty of money thrown at it hence why it was minimised but not totally fixed. There were still millennium bug events but they were dealt with quickly by knowledgable IT staff.
    Also
Covid was not a Black Swan either because it was already known due to SARS 1 and other events which were dealt with correctly.
Many events are unpredictable but not Black Swans such as asteroid hits and death stars because we know they can happen.
Most events are entirely predictable such as recent energy price rises and food and fuel shortages.
    These were inevitable.

I first recall the term "black swan" used in connection with the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, possibly suggested by the film Black Swan which was released later that year. (The title referred to the role of the "Black Swan" dancer in Swan Lake.) A "black swan event" was described at something that would be highly unlikely to happen, but catastrophic if it did.

The term "soccer" isn't only used in the US, it's also used in Canada, large parts of Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, even as a romanisation in Japan. "Football" can actually refer to 3 or 4 different sports in Australia. Australian rules football (Aussie rules), Association rules football (soccer), Rugby League & Rugby Union footballs (league, union).

It seems like based on the definition of a black swan versus a white swan event that a financial collapse like in 2008 could not be considered a black swan event because we know those are inevitable, and they have happened enough times in the last century to be predictable
And, in fact, many people did predict the 2008 collapse.
