I appreciate many aspects of Protestantism, but I I've always felt that some teachings disconnected me from God. That's why I'm moving towards Catholicism, I see God more with the focus on humility and communion.

@stapme Yeah, I understand that. But there's awful people in all groups and Religions. Doesn't mean the entirety of it is bad. If it doesn't resonate, or it makes you feel uncomfy, don't support it. But don't ignore the actually good people in the church, people that by no means supports such abhorrent behavior.

@stapme There is awful people, and and I do agree, it's more than a shame that it's not been properly addressed. I get why why you see it that way, but like I said there's teachings in Catholicism that have brought me, and many others closer to God.

"Our culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone's lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe, say, or do. Both are nonsense. You don't have to compromise convictions to be compassionate."

@@Mar-wt3di satan hates the church period . Satan hates Catholics ,and Satan hates protestants just as much. Anyone who claims Christ as savior is in the cross-hairs of Satan's rifle. I do not know of any protestants out there that hate Catholics and vice versa . Protestants look at Catholics as being in a church that teaches ,Some, false doctrines not a complete Christian writeoff. Catholics look at protestants and immediately think Luther and heretic , without looking at what a protestant actually believes. We, you and I ,are taught what we are taught because some one taught our teachers and if they were taught wrong we tend to accept what is being taught as truth till we actually check out the information for ourselves. Acts 17:11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

Constantine turned the ROMAN Catholic Church into the political institution it is today. He brought in pagan gods and beliefs which the Catholic church adopted as their own with slight changes. Example: The popular Catholic Mary-with-the-child-Jesus statue is the ancient Semiramis ("Queen of Heaven") and Nimrod. In Egypt they were known as Isis and Osiris.

It doesn't matter what age we live in the moral universal truths still exist regardless.
As for questioning the authority a good example was when St. Paul questioned St. Peter the leader of the Apostles when he instructed the Gentiles to obey Jewish dietary kosher laws. Even the Pope is capable of making mistakes which is why it sometimes is necessary for other Bishops to step up and correct his error.
The matters of the faith as a Catholic I believe the Pope is infallible being such the faith comes from the Holy Spirit. But matters outside of the faith he is capable of making mistakes.

Excellent talk with Jordan yesterday (the video's release date) - I look forward to the next one.
Peterson has done his research though; therefore it would be terribly unfortunate if the issue of corruption within the Church were downplayed in their next discussion... I do pray that His Excellency, the most reverend Bishop Barron, will first seek to adhere to the will of the Father in His talks, and if it is not too much of an assertion, perhaps reassure Jordan of the fact of Christ's mystically presence here on earth (His Body), the Roman Catholic Church (and none other).
This quote by St. Nicholas of Flue is perhaps fitting for the times and the subject:
*“The Church will be punished because the majority of her members, high and low, will become so perverted. The Church will sink deeper and deeper until she will at last seem to be extinguished, and the succession of Peter and the other Apostles to have expired. But, after this, she will be victoriously exalted in the sight of all doubters.”*
It should be noted that this is no reason to leave or avoid the Holy Church... We ought to lament, do penance, worship reverently, and evangelize the world WITHOUT bending a knee to modernism by abandoning or diluting the dogma and doctrine, which has been given to us by Christ's Church throughout the ages as incontrovertible Truth..

Re a blessed object: on TH-cam an orthodox priest in answer to a Q said a bishop (because of ordination) can impart holiness to inanimate objects. Priest was explaining why icons are sacred. Adherents are asked to kiss an icon of a particular saint to obtain a blessing or a granting of a request. The Icon itself has these properties. As does holy water and sacred oils. Holy water does not carry an element of sacredness because we believe it, holy water and oils carry a sacredness which can be extend blessings because the bishop imparted graces to physical things. (Example: it’s standard that demons specifically don’t like holy water)

The laughter that followed from both Jared and Bishop Barron with regard to much of the mythologizing from popular culture is indicative of the facile and shallow thinking currently present in social media. When depth of a debate is determined by « My opinion, your opinion » each holding on to one’s opinion as an absolute truth, no learning takes place, and, we become « dummies » speaking to « dummies ».

One thing people don’t do is CHANGE. That’s a fact, not an excoriation. The ancients knew how to live because life seemed to be more simple then. We’ve done a wonderful job of complicating existence. But a great side product is that the world is being pulled up out of poverty as we become healthier and better educated. BUT...people don’t change. Their tools and obstacles change, but our drives and discipline are no different than those who walked concurrently with Jesus. We have a big problem with perspective. “2000 years ago was SUCH a long time”. No...it wasn’t. If you were humanity on a walk, 2000 years ago would be your friend sneaking up to put his hands over your eyes and say “GUESS WHO”. It was yesterday. It’s the tickle in your nose that remains after you sneeze. It’s the remaining sulfur smell after blowing out a match. It’s your echo in an empty mall calling back to you reminding you of how lonely the modern age has become.
People don’t change just because they have quick access to world events.
We need to revisit the scriptures and find out exactly why they were TRUTH 2000 years ago because they’re still true.
Also...you don’t even have to claim belief in God. They scriptures might still have something to say to you.
Also...I’m kind of done with the arguments over the arithmetic of Protestantism v Catholicism. We need to focus on the calculus. Where are we going? Not...what are we doing?
    Where are you going?

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🏛️ Catholics are accused of being stuck in the past, but the value should be on what is right or wrong, rather than modern or ancient.
08:12 🧠 Catholics do think for themselves within the framework of tradition, and prejudice is inherent in all forms of conversation.
14:05 🌈 The Catholic Church's stance on homosexuality is about moral argument, not fear (homophobia), and it's important to engage in reasoned discourse.
18:23 💥 History of corruption and violence exists in various institutions, but it doesn't disprove the value of the institution's principles or ideals.
21:08 ✝️ Saints and grace stand as a counterbalance to corruption within the Church, representing a steady path amid the turbulence of history.
22:45 🚢 The analogy of Noah's Ark highlights the Church's mixture of saints and sinners throughout history, carrying both beauty and imperfections.
23:24 🚫 False correlation: Celibacy is not linked to sexual abuse. Evidence shows perpetrators come from various backgrounds and professions, indicating a sociopathic or narcissistic behavior issue.
26:09 🙏 Blessing sets things aside for sacred purpose. It's an ontological act, designating an object, place, or building as sacred. The reverence for blessed objects signifies their sacred status.

I enjoy Bishop Barton’s discussions. I appreciate his insight. On this discussion though, I’d like to comment some. The “myth” that Catholics don’t think for themselves I believe stems from the argument that Catholics do not read from the Bible during Mass. They read from the Missal, which is a collection of snippets from the Bible.
There is another similar criticism being that the Priest “dictates” out to the congregation and the congregation politely nods and recites accordingly. Rather than the philosophical answer given where Bishop Barron basically says “nobody thinks for themselves”, I think he would have gotten more traction addressing where the belief comes from behind the “myth” or accusation, or criticism, that Catholics don’t think for themselves.
Next. Bishop Barron did a good job explaining his belief that Priestly Celibacy was not a contributing factor in the child sexual abuse scandal that has rocked the Catholic Church. Yes. Pedophiles are narcissistic and sociopathic and can be found in all walks of life. That said, I think more acknowledgment is needed in how the structure of the celibate Catholic clergy lent itself to the Church being taken advantage of by these horrifically perverse individuals. It also lends itself to being a safe haven for homosexuals to hide and escape scorn and ridicule while still receiving the trust and faith of, and power over, the congregation. The same holds true for the pedophiles.
We are also not seeing any measures taken by the Church to weed out would be homosexuals and child molesters. We also know that these horrific offenders were secreted away by the Church. All of this is so completely inexcusable and provides a complete barrier for many people to find their way back to the Catholic Church.
One “myth” I’d like an answer on is the the Catholic Church is not Biblical.
Priestly celibacy, for instance, is not Biblical.

In order to comprehend the modern world at all, one of the first things to remember is the
extraordinary influence exerted by the French culture, above all in the eighteenth century. French was
the common language of all educated people, the language of international politics and diplomacy, of
learning and literature and, above all, of social intercourse and public communication. The
immense importance of the French Enlightenment was due not so much to the intrinsic value of its
ideas as to the wide publicity they enjoyed. This diffusion of French thought probably reached its
climax during the era of the Revolution, so that, as de Maistre said, the lightest opinion of the French
people was like a battering ram with 20 million men behind it.
Now throughout the greater part of this period the international influence of French culture had a
very anti-Catholic character since it became increasingly identified, first with the anticlerical
rationalism of the Encyclopedists and Voltaire, and then with Rousseau and his revolutionary disciples.
When at last the current of opinion changed, the tide of the international diffusion of French culture
had slackened, but enough remained to give the French Catholic revival an exceptional importance in
    the development of modern Catholicism.
It may seem difficult to account for the revival at all in the light of the anti-Catholic and anti-
clerical tendencies in France throughout the whole modern period. In fact, or so it seems to me, it was
the persecution that the Church underwent which was largely responsible for its expansion and vitality.

Twice the clergy or religious orders were driven out of the country, but each of these persecutions was
followed by an increase of strength and spiritual activity. For persecution and exile force men to face
reality. Certainly the revival of French Catholicism dates from the darkest period of the Revolutionary
terror when Catholic exiles were scattered all over the world, when the elite of the clergy were rotting
in the prison hulks at La Rochelle or in the swamps of Guiana.
In this unprecedented situation a large
responsibility fell upon the laity. It was the Catholic women of France who kept the faith alive in the time of the Terror and the years of slow persecution that followed. And it was laymen who had to
speak for the Church when the pulpits had been closed and the Catholic colleges and schools of
theology had been dispersed. It seems another Revolution is headed our way where the clergy is having trouble reaching our young people. For example an Archbishop in Indiana last week Archbishop Thompson of Indianapolis has stripped a Jesuit-run school of its 'Catholic' label after the school refused the archbishop’s directive that it not renew a teacher’s contract who had ‘married’ a same-sex partner. My point is the French Revolution can teach us alot about our catholic identity as the liberals cultural marxists attack the catholic faith from every angle.
    An Archbishop once said;
Not until I have built my school shall one stone of my Cathedral be laid upon another' " This great prelate fully realized what every Catholic today should take as his motto, "The foundation of the parish church is the schoolhouse'" Be the support of the school a burden, be it built and perpetuated at a great sacrifice, its value is beyond estimation, the burden and the sacrifice are featherweights in comparison to the good that arises from the Catholic school.
The spiritual life of a parish without a school is tepid, neither hot nor cold. Let the school be the best possible. Too much time or too much care cannot be given to it, for Catholic education amidst the deluge of Liberalism which has overwhelmed the world is the ark of salvation. Speak out fearlessly on this matter of education. Say squarely and frankly that irreligious education leads to the devil. An irreligious school is the school of Satan.

I grew up Seventh-day Adventist and one thing I found interesting in their self-image is that not only the Catholic Church had become type with fallen Babylon but Protestantism too-over one hundred years ago. Of course, now one hundred years later, there's little that differentiates SDAs from the rest, they're no saints. But the reason Protestantism was labeled Fallen was their falling away from Bible passion, and lack of an emphasis on individualistic sanctification (a group of Adventists concluded they had become saints). If it's true individuals can become saints through personal wrestling with God, then what differentiates a direct descendant of Christ and Peter (directly receiving His Spirit) from a Pope generations and generations physically removed?
Since it's hard for us mere mortals to judge one's Sainthood, whether Pope or humbled laymen, I think character and Bible truth are the only dependable traits to observe on individual basis.

    • @NeanderdeOliveira
      @NeanderdeOliveira 5 ปีที่แล้ว

TheLeonhamm thanks for the comment. From your comment, however, succession doesn't appear to be a defining factor whatsoever. If in the lineage we see traces of demonic will, then it's not the lineage that defines a church, but its Spirit, since it was by an individual's actions that we judge demonic tendencies, and it's by the Word that we validate whether a Pope spoke his own opinion or Christ's. It seems to me that even in the Bible God gives no preference to lineage, or else today we would be talking about Esau rather than Jacob. Or, when Joshua was confronted by a visitor and asked "who's side area you on?" the visitor made no attachments to Joshua's cause, but rather said "No. I'm on God's side."
My point in the first comment was to say that the most rational approach, if in doubt: don't favor any Churches or denominations, but instead let the Bible mold your own spirit.
I have no qualms in overlooking thousands of years of mistakes and mishaps, even persecution, but because the Catholic Church opts to see the Bible as its own creation, resting it's foundation on itself, rather than a branch beholden to the Bible, the church has by extension freed itself from its influence, even opting to change laws written in stone for its own cause.

    • @NeanderdeOliveira
      @NeanderdeOliveira 5 ปีที่แล้ว

kat cogge I know it's not a popular topic in our modern days but repentance and a change of heart has always been at the center of Bible lifestyle. As in John 3, it's by approaching God's light that our actions are molded by Him, thought and emotion are moved and changed. That's what I meant by wrestling. This does not contradict the idea that by Him we are saved. In fact, it's by believing in Him that we listen, then follow. And it's not always easy, but the more we love God, the more we hunger and thirst, the better improved our relationship with others become, for example.

Neander: it’s more in-depth then what I’m going to say but consider this question. Jesus did not give us a Bible, he gave us a Church that through the Holy Spirit compiled all the books that make up Holy Scripture. Do your homework and you will find that the Bible was not dropped from the sky, but compiled by the Catholic Church. Also, you’re not being honest by saying that because the Church has had and will have bad individuals that it is somehow not valid. It’s like saying that all cops are bad so the entire Law enforcement profession is not what it was intended for.

    • @NeanderdeOliveira
      @NeanderdeOliveira 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Jesse Mendoza Thanks for the thought exercise, but I think that argument falls short, mostly due to logic.
Say, for example, the scribes who, centuries before Christ, first edited and put together the Torah decided to start an organization, and that organization they started long ago was still present. I'm arguing that if that specific lineage of scribes were still around, they would have no greater authority over the text's interpretations & appropriations than a scholar, or a humble God-fearing man. Same thing today. If I were to compile a new Bible, adding some Gnostic texts to the bunch, I could very well start a church to carry that newly canonized Bible thousands of years into the future. And in that future, does the church I started have any authority or claim to the texts? The ones who compiled the books and passed them forward don't own anything about the *content* of the books. Editing and compiling grants no one special powers over the message being carried therein. Would the image of the church I started even be the same one thousand years later? Probably not. Furthermore, Christ's gift was not a man-made structure that fails with time ("structure" meaning organization or system). Christ's gift was his Spirit. And I mean that in the sense of supernatural phenomena, not the wishy-washy sense. His Spirit entered, illuminated, and empowered humble leaders and prophets through all the ages. They wrote inspired words. And those inspired words have the power to trump any "claim to the throne." And we can judge for ourselves whether the compilation truly gathered God's Divinely appointed Men's writings. They are not deemed inspired because the compilation says so. We're all grateful that the people compiling and making copies of these books, by all appearances, could distinguish God's hand in each book or letter. But they too have no claim over its content.
And I appreciate the other point you made, but I was intentionally generalizing for the sake of generalizing. I know full well God has his people in all Churches. But from a bird's eye view, generalisations allow us to see forms-patterns that take shape.

Great topic Bishop Barron. I like your videos a lot. About this one, I would stand out that the enlighment did not began with Descartes. The enlightment way of thinking began with a group of people which Descartes himself, and also Malebranche for example, tried to fight back; this gruop of people were known as erudite libertinists (libertinage érudite, in french). Pierre Bayle is is one of the best example of their way of thinking. Among other things, they proclaimed the liberation of moral laws so that everyone could live like "free spirits". They tend to a pantheist cosmology. And searched for a encyclopedia way of knowledge, where profound issues doesnt matter; only the scientific knowledge can make humanity progress. They are the very first progressits. Its very common to identidy Descartes and the ones follow as thinkers who broke wiht the christian tradition. But its just not true. Descartes tried to save the scholastic from its intelectual failure, of course, he did not gave a perfect solution...

The Church can rightly decide it will never marry two men, but has no standing in the public sphere. Another less charismatic speaker might not do that, regardless of the soundness of his or her argument. Is this a kind of adhominen fallacy to be convinced simply by the character of the speaker? I'd roll my eyes if anyone else tried to disqualify homophobe labeling, which is accusing someone of limiting discussion because of bigotry, with a sports metaphor. It's too facile.

last topic...i have read that it happens at the same rate in the general populace as otherwise, given a total male population, meaning, it's a human thing.

Ye must be born again by the Holy Spirit, "baptized in the Holy Spirit" into the body of Christ and not by "water baptism". Water baptism does not save anyone. If you're not baptized by the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ you're not saved.

Bishop I appreciate your passion. I was raised Catholic and am now Baptist, and very much subscribe to many of the positions and works by Ravi Zacharias, John Macarthur, and John Lennox who offers a technical articulation for the need of a creature greater than any I have yet to hear. Why is it that the Catholic Church doesn’t have such genius level apologists making such an impact on the world as those I have mentioned? Ravi and his organization haven’t a fraction of the power the Catholic Church wields yet Ravi’s works alone, not counting many others, absolutely dwarfs the penetration in the World that Ravi’s organization has. I would think of the Catholic Church truly were serious about the great commission we are called to that they would humble themselves and get on about the commission we are called to do. I left the Catholic Church due primarily to the idolatry which was solidified in John Paul’s book as he idolizes Mary as a Demigod, and the Catholic Church‘s massive possessions that in now way move the great commission forward. I simply cannot take the Catholic Church seriously with the possessions they cling to and their priceless city which requires a quite literal Italian shakedown to step foot into. God bless. Humbly, J

@Marty God bless you! Christ's intention was to teach us to love one another. I would be very interested in learning of a Catholic apologist on the same intellectual level as Dr John Lennox, and willing to debate Richard Dawkins and the like. I've never seen nor heard of one with such intellectual prowess. It's absolutely amazing with the Catholic churches power that they do not take steps to truly fight the good fight at the highest intellectual levels. It tells me it's not an academic church, but one of tradition and followers who don't bother to look at other ways. God bless them, and may God have mercy.

John Spelic, there’s plenty of Catholic apologists around who made a lot of difference. You’re just too much engrossed with popular Protestant figures you mentioned.
The ironic thing about it, is that these Catholic apologists used to be rabid anti-Catholic Protestants who are now staunch Catholic defenders. Quite interesting, isn’t it?
Look for Dr Scott Hahn, Marcus Grodi, Steve Ray, Dr David Anders, Robert Haddad, and Trent Horn and company on Catholic Answers. There are some more.

I realize every institution has problems sexual abuse problems what have you? but when the institution itself tries to cover it up that's the problem
You can't honestly sit here and tell us that the higher-ups in the church the Pope on down didn't have any indication of this was going on for years and years , I've known priests just in our area that were shuffled off someplace else or hidden away moved to a different parish because of these issues, I mean go back 300 years and there's all kinds of documentation of monks that were participating in homosexual acts, It was so prevalent in some monasteries they where to shut down .

Your eminence, I will do my earnest to keep my critique brief and in context.
    1. Some Catholics are stuck in the past. They want a return to a Latin Mass, for example.
    2. One is always ceding a certain amount of free thought when deciding to follow a set of rules in one's life.
    3. Homophobia can be used against most Christians, including Catholics.
    4. That human history is full of violence and corruption does not excuse the Vatican from its own perils.
    5. Agreed.
    6. Dude, seriously? You don't know what a blessing is?

      John Baird
      1. The Latin Mass is superior than that of Paul VI. So good for them.
      2. Everybody is following some set of rules or trend. To be a Christian today makes you part of the counter-culture and so more “freethinking” than than the majority of people.
      3. Homophobia isn’t real. It’s a made up term used to shame people into agreeing with sexual perversion.
      4. Did he say that it does?
      5. Agreed
      6. Equal

      1 Corinthians 14:4-8
He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies the church. I would that you all spoke with tongues but rather that you prophesied: for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
