I think that you're on the right track with Sprit since it carried that in the name before. What about something Norwegian that goes along with Spirit. I thought Spirit of the Woods was good since the boat was built by Mike "Plant". ;)
Duracell was my favorite of your three, but I also like "Coppertop". It ties into duracell, and also reminds me of copper bottomed boats of yesteryear.
My opinion is that this name most appropriately suits this project & it's mission! You are a young couple who are being supported by a " community " that wants to see you 2 succeed!
To be honest with you, I really like the idea of officially naming the boat Duracell (if there's no trademark issues) -- it just makes sense. Keep up the good work!
Oh dear god DURACELL 100%! With the giant livery on the side, would be so awesome! Bonus: that sweet, sweet (possibly😉) Lifetime Support from Duracell! Bowsprit looks great, what a project!
no support from Duracell the company. I think they felt that sponsoring the boat one time back in the 80's was enough ;) That would be cool to have duracell in giant letters across the side again....
@@TheDuracellProject --- Would it though? I mean, this is your personal project. You've stripped the boat, you've made lots of modifications, the boat is barely recognisable. Name it whatever you want, don't be tied to the past.
“Durasail” or “Spirit of Community” is my favorite... But you can also form a name from the first two letters of the first name of your family members or the people who have or had a large part in the construction of the boat. In my case, for example, that would be called “Spirit of Ildamaro”. You can play with the two letters in question in sequence and create a well-sounding name. Regards from baltic shore.
Since there may be trademark/copyright issues with "Duracell", calling it "Durasail" is a decent idea. After all, it HAS been a pretty durable sailboat and your improvements will only make it more durable.
Spirit of the Woods is such a beautiful name and it is a continuation of what has gone before. I am not so certain that "Duracell" the brand deserve the coverage but you will have to live on her for a long time so choose whatever feels right. I love all of your fibreglass and carbon lamination work as well as your gluing techniques but I am always a little fretful when I think of that stainless plate glued to the bottom of Coyote's carbon keel... Thank you for documenting your fabulous journey and no matter what her name becomes Mike Plant's boat is in deserving hands.
As a Norwegian, Dugnad is quite a fiffy name. In modern times, dugnad is gathering the neighborhood to complete a task that is to big for one or two families. In Molde, Norway, we made a "dugnad" to upgrade the trails all over the mountains. The way you guys explaind it, reminds me of the Amish 😁 And their traditions go a loong way back. Great job as always guys and gals! Dæjåå!
Duracell, it MUST be Duracell. In fact I was surprised by this segment in the video, I had just always assumed that this would definitely be the boat's name. And the fact that it was never officially called that in the past makes it an even more apt name. (If not, I think that "Pumpin' Epoxy" could work too) ;-)
Please please please consider a GoPro mount on the very end of the bowsprit - maybe one looking forward and one looking down? Imagine the bow riding dolphin footage!
You've kind o worked yourselves into what the name of the boat HAS to be... DURA in that classic black block and Sail in a finely complimentary script! DURASail...
Down below, @yachticus alluded to you guys contacting Duracell to see how they could get into this project, and it dawned on me, whether Duracell makes industrial lithium rechargeable batteriess, and in a stupor of enthusiasm, I imagined Duracell donating an OceanVolt motor, and the capacitors were manufactured by Duracell. That would be so cool!
Very impressive construction and a great design. On naming a boat - it’s your boat call it what you like. Some people forget that if you are cruising in foreign lands you will be calling in your boat name by radio - many times phonetically- so four, five or six letters trumps fourteen letters hands down.😉👍⛵️
Hey guys! It’s not often I comment on peoples channels. I’ve been a follower of you guys and your build since the very beginning. I look forward every week to catching up on your progress. I’ll be here in Virginia anxiously awaiting your video updates. I know you’ve been tossing around some ideas for a name, and I’m sure you will come up with the perfect name. Honestly in my mind though it will always be Duracell. I did think of a cool alternative to share and who knows, you might think it’s great. “Recharged” Seems fitting for a boat named after a battery that is now going to be completely rebuilt. :) Looking forward to next weeks vid!
If you are open to a suggestion, you might want to consider making the end cap for the bow sprit out of a block of urethane foam, and carving it into a fair shape that slides into the end of the sprit and accentuates the prow. Just a thought.
Here in Norway we have a silly name for projectboats that is being left for years in gardens or behind garages.Ripsbærbuen or Solbærbuen after witch berries or tree that grows around the boat😊
'Durasail' came to mind, it seemed an obvious direction, but I see someone has already mentioned it. I like 'Spirit of Dugnad' that someone mentioned below. Or 'Dugnad' for short.
Before you glue the bowsprit to the boat, do weigh it, for I bet there are a number of people out there (like moi) very curious to know how much it weighs just with the fiberglass, no rollers or the ss liner on the channel. How about doing a quiz, or a guess-a-rama shootout for people to try to estimate the weight of the bowsprit? As is, I bet it is weighing about 35 to 40 lb, and I say this because as a burly Viking descendent that you are, I think I heard a grunt as you fitted it to the bow... : ⁰ )
With the jazz background music it seems like "welcome to our piano bar / boat building project". I love it but especially the omniscient narrator's question-comments. Always good humor !
The naming process got me thinking of a word with MP for Mike Plante, a word like eMPower for example. Yet there is a NorthWest flavor, so the letters NW could factor in somehow too. I cannot think of a word that contains all these letters for a name which would be like a pseudo-acronym.
No. It was never named Duracell as Matt explained and using a commercial companies’ name makes it sound like a sponsor. Anyway it is so without creativity and thought.
As someone who has only sailed twice in my entire life, this channel brings back every bit of emotion that you get from cruising across the water with just the wind! I love that you introduce each Patreon individually because it showcases the diversity in the sailing community! As far as names go, Spirit of Duracell is my vote!

Sorry I'm late. I was surprised when Matt said he was not going to vacuum bag the bowsprit. Very uncharastic. I thought he enjoyed the challenge of figuring out how to vacuum bag as much as the finished product. I've been thinking about a name suggestion. Sticking with the "battery" theme, How about "Eveready" with the 9 lives logo having a picture of LaPawz inserted through the 9. Otherwise, I like the Duracell name. Thanks for the video 👍👍👍😁
Congratulations on the bowsprit and great peak into this year's Wooden Boat Festival. Cool to know you two were so close by our spidsgatter "pod" doing the sails aboard La Vie n Rose for NWMC. I love your approach to naming... including people and honoring the past. The comment about shortening to "dug" was fun and given all the prominence of Duracell.. What about Duradug? You'd get to tell both stories then... the connection to Duracell and the spirit of community in the Norwegian word. Or, Durasprit... a nod to Duracell and spirit (but abbreviated in a fun way) AND occurs to me because of this cool new bowsprit;) Plus, have you eaten at Owlsprit? An awesome small, locally owned cafe in PT? One word names are definitely easier for the long term and people often nickname to one word if names are longer. Congratulations on all your progress!
Dear both of you. I haven't been writing a lot of comments on your videos. I confess I love what your are doing. And a lot of thanks for what you publish every week. Regarding the name of the boat, if I may suggest "Duracell From The Woods". That would preserve the link with the history of the boat (Duracell) but also the work you are doing in the woods. Thanks again for your videos, best regards. Merci !
Given the name of your channel, "Duracell" would be the obvious choice. Although, I'm almost 100% sure that the "no affiliated" company will claim copyright. "Spirit of the woods" does make sense now that you are doing all this work in that environment. But going forward, cruising the oceans, IMO it would be awkward to see a 60ft astonishing boat in an anchorage with that name. Dugnad is pretty close to what this boat represents (build by the community) and given that Janneke is Norwegian would be a nice touch towards her and a tribute to the vast maritime history they carry (I'm from the south of Europe so no strings attached) If I may, I have a name to suggest. Given the history of the vessel, the circumnavigation that it has done and one more (I guess you are planning on doing after launch), I would consider "The seven seas" ⛵⛵⛵
Reggae is very calming for the laminating but keeps you going at a nice pace. Good choice. Weight guess - "More than 20 lbs" - that coosa board is heavy.
I really like how the bow sprit is coming out, looking forward to seeing it on the boat. As for the name I think you have some time to think about it and when it hits you, you will know that is it.
Thank you for the beautiful afternoon on the La Vie en Rose, and for the great videos! My Norwegian heritage compels me to vote for Dugnad … or if you really want to foul the lines with a compromise: “The Spirit of Duranad”
As Duracell, the Ocean racing sail boat technically is no more I think “Spirit of Duracell or Duracell II” when you listen to Mats intro and having witnessed to incredible transformation of this boat a change in name is warranted but let’s keep in the spirit!
