For anyone who's drummed behind a microphoned drum kit you will be familiar with this sound. Cyrus this is your best one to date! The Toms sound really good as does the bass drum . The mix is spot on like you would have got from an isolated sound check.
I could be sitting behind that kit myself😀(except I'm not on your playing level😩)

Thanks. The second verse is fun, I remember with this song in particular, as we were hashing it out in the writing sessions, we purposefully were trying to see how many different beats I could play over that same riff, which is one of the reasons why there's so many different drum patterns in the song, like the syncopated rhythm in the main riffs, yet the downbeats in the prechoruses, and then half time in the choruses. And, last but not least, the nod to hardcore at the very end of the song with the final two measures.
@@CyrusBolooki You guys absolutely nailed the writing, Cyrus. I'm a guitarist - not a drummer - but I grew up listening to NFG and I air drum to your beats all the time. They are that much fun. You've added so many little nuances that I've loved from day one. You guys will always be a legendary band in my book. Have seen you guys just about every time you come to my area. I love this! I did the same thing in real life when we toured with Blink-182. I was able to stand behind Travis while he soundchecked a bunch and watch him play songs from a drummers' perspective. It broke down his rhythms and fills in a totally new way for me and taught me a bunch -- without me ever picking up sticks!

It is clear that you guys have stood the test of time with minimum member interruptions. Has anyone approached you all for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. While there are a lot of great pop punk bands, you guys have carried that genre for 24 years. What are the qualifications?
The main qualification is that a band’s first eligible year is when their first studio album is at least 25 years old. So NFG would be qualified in 2024.
@@fissi0n470 I saw that too. I wonder what the politics surrounding an effort like this look like. With a 3 year runway ahead of us, could we do something now that would help land that plane then.
@@corner7bass02 I know Green Day got in the first year they were eligible. Blink 182 didn’t get in after 2 years of being eligible. NFG is smaller than Blink so I don’t think they’d be nominated either. The Offspring have never been nominated and they’ve been eligible since 2014. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke though. NWA is in, LL Cool J is nominated while bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Slayer aren’t in.
@@fissi0n470 Interesting. Excellent point. Ya, speaking of the same or similar genre, to see the Offspring not in is pretty wild. I’m sure there are a ton of politics surrounding it. I wonder if a social uproar would impact the committee’s views. Shoot, it took Rush forever to get in as well.
Thanks for the compliments and thanks to Fissi0n for the explanation, which I believe is spot on. Personally, it would feel like an ultimate achievement, but, again, just like Fissi0n points out, the chances of it are probably pretty low so I'm not holding my breath over here. I'm good with just knowing that we've definitely made a mark on this genre in our career, and hopefully for the better!

Yep, that's me taking a stab at it, while trying to keep the drums as the focus in the mix. Not perfect, but way better than just the mics on the camera(s), especially if you're going to be swapping between angles like this!

It's "muscle memory" at this point. I definitely don't sit up there and think of exactly what I'm about to play as I'm playing. If I did, I'd probably be messing up a lot more than I already do! Also, what km5658 said here, I did write the drum part, so it's kinda ingrained in me.
That being said, over the years, the drum part (and the fills) have slightly morphed as I've become more accustomed to playing it. For examples, go find old live videos of us playing this song, like on the NFG Facebook page, for instance. There are way less fills and ghost notes in those performances, and it's more just straightforward like the record.

That snare sound megs! What you using?
That's my secret weapon -- a SJC Drums Titanium snare (6.5" x 14") that's a certain titanium alloy that can't be sourced anymore...last I heard that specific alloy was gobbled up by the military like 7-8 years ago and is "no longer available." I also have a Remo Black Emperor X head on top, with some slight muffling with a Drumtac dampener (I tape them down just to ensure they don't come flying off mid-show, and also to give a little extra dampening without having to cut up a 2nd one and put it on).
Plus, know that the mix in the video has some processing on the snare -- dynamics and EQ definitely help it stick out in the mix!

Why did you switch the sticks?
Sometimes I feel as though one might be a different weight than the other. Vater sticks are very well balanced from the factory, but, especially with the ones I keep on the sides of my kit as extras, sometimes they can get mixed up from night to night when I don't use them and just pack them away. I've known some people to "mark" their sticks to further break them down by weight. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes when grabbing a replacement stick, it just feels like a completely different weight than the other one, and in cases like those, I sometimes shuffle them around in my hands to see which way feels better.
P.S. I'll almost always try to put the "heavier" one in my left hand, because my thought is that the right hand is usually having to play faster (like on the hats), while the left is just slamming away on the snare!
