Hard to believe there are younger Tennessee fans that don’t know to hate Alabama. So many consecutive losses to one school should engender its own hatred, separate from historical rivalry. Younger Alabama fans, however, don’t even understand the importance of “Tennessee Hate Week” when their older counterparts start sharing videos on social media each year. The pain from the Peyton Manning years lingers on though for older Bama fans.

Living in Big Ten country, I've noticed a similar phenomenon with younger Michigan folks. I wouldn't call it a lack of awareness, it's more of a resignation. I grew up watching Mizzou during our 25 game losing streak to Nebraska and I found it easy to hate them, but that game wasn't an Alabama-Tennessee or Michigan-Ohio State situation where both programs have generations of championship-level history.

The problem is so many in Alabama and T*nnessee students aren’t from the state anymore, and have no context for the rivalry. I lived in Ttown for six years and saw more and more plates from up north, no appreciation or respect for what happened before they got there. Now even the players have lost that edge, sad day.

We were mad 10 years ago... now most of us are just apathetic. Football has been so bad for so long most freshmen don't even care about their first football season as a college student. We know no matter who the coach is or what players we have we're going to lose to every team that matters as well as most teams that are completely irrelevant.

BASIC MOVIE TIME I AGREE FANS SHOULD BE UPSET, But i have begun now to understand that there are those that have been taught that loyalty and committent NO LONGER have any meaning. That starts in the enviorment they were raised in. Im old school i believe in staying where you committed to stay
But i also understand that if someone is not committed to be where they are at then its best for them and others that they leave, My Vols just recently lost maybe one of the best players to ever play at TENNESSEE, But it became obvious that he NO LONGER wanted to be with the Vols, AND he will be better off and the team will be better off without him. As a vol fan i wish him well he is a great player that will be playing on Sunday somewhere, I would never question his talent but i do question his committment.

    • @LonghornsLegend
      @LonghornsLegend 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yea, I don't get where you can make definitions about what type of fan you are if they don't agree with you. Times change, it's ok if you don't agree with the new rules, but something tells me when you pull in a big time transfer that benefits you that you won't be "pissed" he was allow to play. Something tells me if he was productive you wouldn't care that he transferred.
And it's hypocritical to get upset over players not playing in bowl games. That isn't our body on the line, and it isn't us who loses millions if an injury happens. Their body is their livelihood. This is just a sport you enjoy for fun, I know you like to think they are just some gladiators here for your enjoyment on Saturday but they have to provide for a family and high picks playing in meaningless bowl games makes no sense.

The TN v AL game was the game of the year when I was a kid. But back then (I’m 54) Auburn was a scrimmage game. Then when Coach Dye took over at Auburn things started to change. After Coach Fulmer was replaced Tenn started downward and the rivalry became Auburn (to the younger fans). Tennessee remains a rival to me but they are down now so it is not as interesting. Since Coach Saban took over it seems that every team that has beaten Alabama during his time wants to be a rivalry. (LSU, Ole Miss, TAM). Just remember the Mike’s that coached bama before Saban. We hurt for a long time. Point of this story be loyal when you are scraping the bottom and enjoy being on top because neither one lasts forever. RTR

I've been an Alabama fan since the first football game I remember watching in the 1963 Orange Bowl, so quite a while. In my lifetime Tennessee never knocked Alabama out of a national championship by beating them.
Whenever they beat Alabama was always a year Alabama wasn't going to win a NC anyway.
I can't say the same about Auburn. Somebody has to take something away from me that I could have (and probably should have) had for me to hate them as a #1 rival.

Speaking as an Ohio State fan, I think it's a huge deal. The two schools are historic rivals. I've had these discussions on ElevenWarriors before, having a handful of other fans try & put down your passion for the team on certain issues. The question I always ask those fans is: If you don't care that much, what are you even doing here?
Ohio State's stadium atmosphere in the 2000's was on par with Penn State & LSU, now it's a well known fact that we only get up for the big games & night match ups. On one end of the spectrum, when nobody is checking the whackos in your fan base, guys like Harvey Updyke start poisoning trees. But on the other end, too much fan checking & ego investment in the fan base's reputation can neuter even the most passionate fan base.

In 2005 I was working in Knoxville on the west end of town at the Sam's club that is located right in front of the Wal Mart basically both are the same parking lot. Anyway, I walked over to the Wal Mart to get a bite to eat for lunch. We had to work outside during operation hours, then we worked on the inside of the store after hours. As I was leaving the Wal Mart I seen a truck that had an Alabama license plate and the county # was 33. Which in Alabama that is Franklin county and home of the Russellville HS Tigers, and there stood about a 6' 4"- 6' 5" tall 260-300 lb African American and another guy and I said to the 2 guys "So you guys from Franklin county Alabama? Must be a couple of Volunteers. You guys don't look like you're up here just visiting a Wally world lol." So the one guy says "Yeah Im from Russellville." and the other guy was like "I'm from Muscle Shoals." And being a huge football fan I said "So you have to be Aaron Sears, and you must be Jason Allen?" They both laughed and said "Yep! That is who we are." I shook both their hands and we talked for 20 min. I told them I was from Florence, Alabama and what I was doing in this part of SEC country. Aaron was driving an old ragged truck, and we talked about that truck and how much he loved that truck, along with some football talk lol. And this was during a streak of victories by the vols that started in 1994 when Peyton Manning led the Vols and the marching band to a 41-14 victory and a loud playing of Rocky Top at Legion Field. One of the most disgusting moments in this rivalry. Still wished Peyton Manning would have slipped and fell on TV while leading the band. Just something to laugh at because he whipped Bama pretty bad that year and started one of those streaks that these teams seem to run against each other. But I looked at Aaron Sears and Jason Allen and said "Brodie Croyle, DeMeco Ryans, and the rest of the Alabama team are gonna beat yall this year." Sears and Allen laughed and said "We will see." We all said bye and I told them win or lose I hope it's a great game and told them it was an honor to meet them. That year Alabama beat Tennessee 6-3, in one of the strangest Alabama/Tennessee games that Ive ever seen, and this was just 2 yrs removed from the 5 OT thriller. And a few years later I seen Sears on social media and sent him a message and asked if he remembered me. And he responded "Yeah I remember you and thought about what you said after that game, matter of fact I went to eat that evening and we talked about you making that prediction and laughed about how we should have seen it coming since we talked to this Alabama fan in Knoxville giving us the biz." It was really cool to have that moment in my life. Also when I would work during that late hours from 7pm- 4am inside the store, there was this manager that was a huge Tennessee fan and when I would get in the scissor lift to paint conduit, and air ducts, he would play Rocy Top over and over and over. My point in all of this is that being a fan, and a rival fan of another team has its fun moments. Did it piss me off to hear freaking Rocky Top? You damn right it did. But I had fun, and these folks were extremely great to work around. I enjoyed every minute of it. And if you're a Tennessee fan I think you should be upset about stuff like this. You don't have to make it something that impacts everything in your life. But It is extremely understandable to be upset and angry about these situations. As an Alabama fan, I would be really upset if this was happening to the Alabama program. Do I want Tennessee to start beating Alabama every other year? No! Are you crazy? That would be just stupid for me to even think about. But I do understand that this is a great, traditional, and one of the best rivalries in college football that is better if it was more even. And what is happening now to this rivalry has made it one of those games that no one even entertains anymore. Even Tennessee and Alabama fans have written this game as a win for Bama every yr now, and that shouldn't be the case with these 2 schools. So yes I think Tennessee fans should be upset, and Alabama fans should NEVER take Tennessee lightly. Because I always look to that 2005 season and say Tennessee could do the same thing. And Prayers for Aaron Sears because Ive been told he has some concusion issues with his mental state and isnt doing well. So I hope he gets better.

I used to invest all my emotions and be all in on college football. That was 15+ years ago. I learned it didn't make money. It didn't pay the bills. It is just a hobby. Yes, I think you should put some time and effort into your hobbies. I am a season ticket holder with a parking pass and a club membership. I attend every home game. That's my investment.
I just don't let the results rule my well-being and life. When I was a child, a teen, and a college student CFB ran my life. The win-loss record decided my emotions for at least 2-3 days. I realized how immature that was as a grown adult.
I say enjoy the sports. Be a fan. Have opinions. Dislike a player's transfer choice. Etc. Just don't let that be your emotion for the rest of the day. If you're upset with your program say your opinion and move on. It's an opinion just like the guy you disagree with. You're not going to change another person's mind on a sports board. As a Sooner fan I know that we've reaped the benefits of UT transfers, however, when you really stop and think about the entire situation it makes sense to me why UT fans are irritated. We all know about the McDonald's ordeal that brought Pruitt (and ultimately the UT program) down. But who ends up getting the worst end of the deal? The Tennessee fans. I don't know which players got paid but the guys that transferred basically just jumped ship, the coaching staff was dismantled and the AD was fired. But in the end, who pays the price for all of that? Tennessee fans. I get the mentality of those fans right now.

It's not right for a program to invest time and money into an athlete only to have him transfer to a rival or team they have to play the next season.

Bama has three major rivals in the SEC (in order): Auburn, Tennessee and LSU. LSU in recent years has leapfrogged Tennessee, and risks doing the same to the Barners (though interstate rivalry is always strong). The Vols find themselves in the same situation as Bama did pre-Saban - hiring new coaches, rolling the dice, and when it didn't pan out (over a ridiculously short term), kicking them out to the curb. In the process, they leave the program mired in uncertainty, and if you're a 5-star trying to choose among top-tier school offers, concern about the future coaching regime can be make or break. I fear that in a few years the Tide will be in that same situation but I hope I am wrong. But it's also never adventageous to succeed an amazing HC.
But in one of your previous videos ("Be careful what you ask for") I think you hit the nail on the head: When the game environment changes, Saban adapts - perhaps reluctantly, but with venom.

Why isn't the Tennessee Alabama rivalry passionate especially among Tennessee fans? Go look at the games they've played vs Alabama as of late. Hard to be passionate when you feel like you're guaranteed a loss.
I'm a Gamecock fan. Born and raised to HATE Clemson and ANYTHING orange. I get where apathetic fans were under Muschamp. Haven't had a competitive game since Spurrier left. There are kids that have been born and not seen us beat Clemson in football. Even Clemson fans I knew in college would say "You'll get your win every five years and then go back to losing". When the team is down it's quite demoralizing for a fan base and that's why it takes so much to turn programs around.

They don’t know what you are talking about. This thing you called “competitive hatred”!
Today, people go all the way from the start.
This lack of enthusiasm has been brought on by the bad athletic decisions made by Tennessee “management “.
