"Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav encountered angry chants of “pay your writers” as he delivered the 2023 commencement speech at Boston University on Sunday.
Zaslav spoke for about 20 minutes at Nickerson Field - where he was met with jeers from the moment he was introduced. As Zaslav offered his advice for the graduating class, there were repeated pauses and interruptions as hecklers were heard shouting “Shut up, Zaslav,” and “We don’t want you here.”"

it's just like in aaa video games. Very often when a studio releases a game that does amazingly well and sells beyond expectations a whole load of the people who worked on that game and made it soo successful get fired, because next quarter when the sales of that game start falling off the executives don't want their profits to go back down, they want to keep them artificially elevated to make sure they get that extra bonus. So they cut costs by getting rid of the skilled and dedicated people who probably put up with intolerable working conditions, unpaid overtime and bullying from management to give them that boost in profits in the first place to save money and keep their numbers looking good. And that's one of the reasons why big games are getting worse, and more buggy, and blander. Because the people who know how to make and finish a good game get chewed up and then kicked out when they do. So next time round there's fewer people with experience, skill and vision to do the job. But the CEO still gets his bonus, and the shareholders get their pay out, so who cares if hundreds of lives are ruined and quality of future games is degraded. Because people with more money than they could ever spend in 10 lifetimes now have even more, and that's all that matters

Of course we back the writers! When people with more class power unionize and strike it helps keep the ability for all workers to do this alive. Also, i don't know if it's just in my head but i feel like the writing is getting pretty bad in a lot of entertainment, and i hope if the writers win enough maybe they'll also win back some freedom in creating entertainment and some time to actually be able to create a good story. Also we need the upper classes fighting the exploitation of run amok capitalism because they have more power. Capitalism is eroding the worth of all people, increasingly it's that everyone has to work more and more and get paid less and less while working in worse and worse conditions. I'm afraid of society collapsing back into feudalism.

This guy pretty much changed the whole of Discovery and especially Animal Planet (my fave channels as a kid) and Travel Channel from education, animals and travel to reality and ghost stuff while airing the same three shows over and over again. It wasn't until like 2019 that I found out, hey, Nat Geo can still do animal and anthropology documentaries, while doing more entertainment stuff that is actually not morbid. It didn't help that Discovery had a huge ammount of channels on the cable package.

Zaslav and the other STREAMERS' "CE9s in particular (Netflix, Amazon) are the loudest proponents of this strike. He absolutely does not look at the humanity in the writers.
As a former Discovery employee I can tell you that every Town Hall meeting had a Jack Welch story. DZ is a horrible name dropper. It’s his shtick. We were under ridiculous objectives and time lines but we got the job done. He’s a hardball CEO but in the end I would say very successful while I was there. I left before the Warner merger, but I hear the place is nuts.

That move sets a dangerous and as you can see, very unpopular precedent. You can't go about doing things like that and not expect some push back.
It might have been better if the writers etc. were paid better, given good guidance and inclusion and picked for talent, not who do we know who do we owe and how cheap can we get them...
But most of the content Zaslav has built his career on has been horrible low grade reality shows. I could care less about DC movies, but arguing Zaslav cares about quality is hilarious.
