I remember listening to an interview with John where he talked about that decision to sing the song live, and how he said that he wanted the song to have the real sound of being in a theatre... and every time I watch this scene, I can't help but think that such a choice is part of what makes this song LIVE.
I too appreciate this being available. I always thought this was one of the best songs in American music. And this scene nails it. The sexual connection between Cole Porter and the Fred Astaire character is beautifully natural, riveting and gentle at the same time. The camera pan that enables seamlessly the jump in time is masterful, and adds to the dramatic climax. This scene was filmed live in the Old Vic.. Kline and Barrowman were not lipsyncing but fully performing. THAT's talent.
So true. It wasn't till I fell in love that I realised how true the lyrics were. "In the roaring traffic's boom, in the silence of my lonely room, I think of you...night and day."
@purpleslog I like the transition from the rehearsal to the premier with the audience filled with men it tux's and ladies in gowns. That entire shot was pure genius.
I never really liked this song until I heard this. LOVED IT! Beautiful voice and gave the song perfect tones and great delivery. I also liked the background musical instruments. Both together made it captivating.
I enjoy hearing John's voice this low but I know it's difficult. But my God . . . this is a beautiful song and to hear these two particular men singing it . . . it just gets me!!
Kevin Kline is magical. Cole Porter/ Kline is cynical, witty , profound, gay circumspect and a true composer. There is still some subtle insight here for Porter lovers and for me its a joy
I have loved this movie for years. It was just now checking John Barrowman's IMDB page that I realized he played Jack. For those who haven't seen the movie John has one more scene...he is also a one night stand for Kevin Kline (Cole Porter.) All seems most appropriate.
hey, I love this movie, the music just makes your mind travel to clean peaceful thoughts!!!! under the height of meeeeeee there's such a hungry yearning burning inside of me!!!! and its this song!!! hahaha
I found this DVD on clearance at my local supermarket... Just had to buy it, even if just because it was a musical with John Barrowman in it. It doesn't matter that he only has a brief part in the whole thing. XDD And it was really good.
@TCall2004 I think of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing together to this in the thirties. It is a great dance I love the old movie starts like Frank and Fred
@johnbarrowman1lover Not a lot at all, but memorably placed. I remember seeing this in the theater and how he simply leapt off the screen. Well-cast, beautiful voice, and one of the most handsome men I have ever seen.
I'm not really a singer, but I suspect the length of the notes, the amount of vocal control required to maintain good pitch on those repeated notes, and the range all make it pretty tough to do well. It sounds simple, but try singing along and you might find it's hard to figure out when you can take a breath without interrupting the smoothness of the lines.
+andyt1313 I'm a trained singer. First of all, the melodic line isn't exactly the easiest one to sing. The singer also has to stay on pitch and the voice has to be even throughout its range. The singer has to enunciate well, but not exaggerate the way he sings the words, making sure that the audience can understand every word. Then, the singer has to have the ability to interpret the words of the song. John Barrowman is one of the best pop and musical theater performers around. He has a gorgeous voice, but he's also well trained and knows how to keep the audience in the palm of his hand with not only the beauty of his voice, but his wonderful interpretation as well.
@HorseyWitchOfTheEast Stuck on a paralell universe being chased by cybermen. It's nice tobe back though, thanks. If you love Doctor Who,I've got a band you should check out. Chameleon Circuit. They're really good and the songs are fantastic!
Nobody but nobody, not even Sinatra, sings this song as Porter wrote it. He synchopates the rhythm and all the famous interpretations smooth it out. SSorry Cole
@Kismetico Very erotic is right! Cole Porter was vey gay and John Barrowman is gay in actual life so I thought the movie, the scenes and the music wher so erotic... It was just beautiful!
Recently watched this film for the first time ever and absolutely fell in love with it. Truly de-lovely.

GORGEOUS.....I loved this film it was magic and the stars were fantastic.
Thanks for posting.
Charming, elegant , and graceful.
I love this movie! I saw it in the theater with my late grandmother and I remember her crying.
FABULOUS......Thank you for posting this awesome share.
Why John isn't more famous? FCS !
If you mean in the US, it's because he spends almost all his time in the UK, where he's very famous.
Loved the movie and Cole Porter! 🙏
So true. It wasn't till I fell in love that I realised how true the lyrics were. "In the roaring traffic's boom, in the silence of my lonely room, I think of you...night and day."

John Barrowman has such an amazing voice. I really adore him.
Lo adoro. Il film, la canzone, gli attori. Meraviglioso tutto

I miss my time at The Waldorf Astoria New York. Mister Porter gave me life, because of him I created my lifestyle.
Such a good movie
I enjoy hearing John's voice this low but I know it's difficult. But my God . . . this is a beautiful song and to hear these two particular men singing it . . . it just gets me!!
John Barrowman is awesome, gorgeous to look at and what a voice!
So do I. John Barrowman has a such a beautiful voice.
love this movie! don't think it received the acclaim it deserved! Ashley Judd is perfect in this role!
Charlene Kelley, agreed! its a brilliant film showcasing Poster's amazing talent against the backdrop of his personal life.
John Barrowman has an absolutely gorgeous voice!
Wonderful song, performed perfectly. I totally enjoyed the film in all, and this scene really hit me :)
Lovely 😊
I'm so agree with you!!
Night and Day....Day and Night!
Kevin Kline is magical. Cole Porter/ Kline is cynical, witty , profound, gay circumspect and a true composer. There is still some subtle insight here for Porter lovers and for me its a joy
John Barrowman's voice is amazing!!!
Hum. I would like to see Capitain Jack sing sometimes... XD
I love this movie.. Have seen it serval times, and it amazes me every time :D
Después de esta interpretación no hay nada, muchas vivas en el cielo para Cole lo amamos
Barrowman handles this great song well. I like the movie special effect for the scene as well. This was the best part of the movie.
Sensacionall!!!! B R A V O !!!! B R A V Ì S S I M O!
What a wonderful clip. It's a shame that nothing else in this 2004 film, DE-LOVELY comes close in excellence or creativity.
john barrowman is soooo hansome and so talented. :D
John Barrowman is pure awesomeness!

I love his voice!!!
This song translates what passion is about.
hey, I love this movie, the music just makes your mind travel to clean peaceful thoughts!!!! under the height of meeeeeee there's such a hungry yearning burning inside of me!!!! and its this song!!! hahaha
I love when he says, "Try E-Flat."
Cole Porter was such an incredible composer & lyricist!!!
Very charming!
Both are my favorite actors :D
"It's relentless... obsessive." :)
I found this DVD on clearance at my local supermarket... Just had to buy it, even if just because it was a musical with John Barrowman in it. It doesn't matter that he only has a brief part in the whole thing. XDD
And it was really good.
I love John Barrowman!
gives me goosebumps like all get out...
John Barrowman!
speechless
I like it best when Kevin Kline slightly dips down and says: "Its beautiful..."
OMG, have always loved Porter. Now a Whovian...had no idea it was Captain Jack looking back...LOVE IT!!!
Kevin Kline...*swoon*
la amooooo
@TCall2004 I think of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing together to this in the thirties. It is a great dance I love the old movie starts like Frank and Fred
Lindoooo demais
Gran Cole Porter!
The only reason I love this movie is because of the MUSIC.
poetry!
I thought it was cute/funny how John(Jack. Whatever.) was like 'I CAN'T DO IT!' at the beginning of the song. Ooooh John. He can do anything.
Me too...
@johnbarrowman1lover Not a lot at all, but memorably placed. I remember seeing this in the theater and how he simply leapt off the screen. Well-cast, beautiful voice, and one of the most handsome men I have ever seen.
This is just beyond beautful, and it's one of my favourite songs ever. Did John ever record a full version of this song? I'd love to hear it.
I love this movie. But I can not find a full movie of De lovely.
I like it let it be
Both of them!
💝👍✌😘
ho sentito un bel "Bravo!" tutto italiano alla fine... Troppo poco per lui! He's great, i love him :)
It's available on Netflix if you're a subscriber. I've seen it about four times...love it.
This was probably the off broadway or Boston version before it went up on Broadway. John Barrowman plays a character called Jack. He isn't Fred Astair
Was anyone else screaming "Just kiss him already!!!"?
hahah... yeah
J.B.. looks so young in this vid ... but still hot as hell
John Barrowman has an entire Cole Porter Album
back in those days, singing was just a little louder than speaking. they didn't scream the vocals.
my girlfriend sounds like a female john barrowman when she sings its wonderful
Damn Ras al Ghul.....
@KHearts16 well you do, when he's performing that night.
I'm curious from any singers or musicians out there what is it about this song that makes it challenging to sing?
I'm not really a singer, but I suspect the length of the notes, the amount of vocal control required to maintain good pitch on those repeated notes, and the range all make it pretty tough to do well. O_O I am just realizing this is the same dude from Torchwood.
Grande escena.
Vilma
CAPTAIN JACK.
which film is this???
i think i may have to watch it too infinity if the doc is in it
on Broadway?
@HorseyWitchOfTheEast Stuck on a paralell universe being chased by cybermen. It's nice tobe back though, thanks. If you love Doctor Who,I've got a band you should check out. Chameleon Circuit. They're really good and the songs are fantastic!
where can i watch all of this?
Jack Harkness!
Okay - so I have to point out - technically Barrowman should be playing Fred Astaire, as he introduced the song.
This is quite homoerotic... LOL :D (I should stop being such a nerd...haha!) Very well sung :) But it's John, would be weird if it wasnt =)
Cole porter right?
Captain Jack from Dr.Who
Nobody but nobody, not even Sinatra, sings this song as Porter wrote it. He synchopates the rhythm and all the famous interpretations smooth it out. SSorry Cole
@DBMalone The whole film is genius, and why wouldn't it be, Cole Porter was one.
@zahraeljaouhari
BARROWMAN
LOL
HELLO 3 IN THE MORNING INSOMNIA
@MikaXKempo No... it's Kevin Kline. ;-)
Harkness is Harkness and ley him sing
I didnt know Captain Jack could sing.
@Kismetico
Very erotic is right! Cole Porter was vey gay and John Barrowman is gay in actual life so I thought the movie, the scenes and the music wher so erotic... It was just beautiful!
