Very honestly, even for us locals in India, it's safest to celebrate holi with family and friends at/near our homes. That's what most poeople do. There are celebrations in local community halls and grounds in major cities and the safety depends on the kind of crowd. Usually family crowds are safe and will respect you and your boundaries. But groups of men do get drunk and eve-teasing incidents are not very uncommon if you venture out on the roads. For foreigners coming to India, I would advise to get in touch with local families (amazing if you have a local host) and get the holi experience with the family. That would be the most fun and safest way for moth men and women. As solo/group of female travellers, Holi time is best avoided for your trip to India. Holi can be fun, but it doesn't take more than a few seconds for the fun to turn into your worst nightmare (as was the case with the couple you met in the lobby). It's sad that many Indians tend to take advantage of women in their drunken state and foreigners usually tend to fall victims because they don't know what exactly to expect. Holi is a celebration of colours and a very old tradition. Wish every Indian celebrated it with the right spirit. Hats off to you guys for your Vrindavan temple celebration and the sheer positivity you possess at all times. Love watching your vlogs :)
She is totally on point. We Being from India, would never venture out in any public celebration especially certain parts of the country which has history of ruckus. You guys were seriously brave and throughout this video I was hoping it ends well.
Antarik Anwesan thanks for your wise advice. However I do think it’s important to stop using words like ‘eve teasing’ to disguise sexual assault as something silly and harmless. After all if someone grabbed your balls in a crowd you wouldn’t call it ‘Adam teasing’.
Hmm...I think the eve teasing can happen in North India, 'Adam teasing' and sexual assault are not common at all:)! Remember this is like United nations, on the streets there are rich, poor, educated-not educated, good and the bad all though latter is very small percentage...all at the same place, so you use must the part between your ears:). Walking in a poor neighborhood in India is perhaps safer than such places in a country like USA; lets just say, you should take precaution your take anywhere else in the world. FYI...i have seen the "Adam teasing" of the kind you describe in USA, not in India yet lol. Enjoy travels wherever you are.
Thank you for being honest about your experiences in India. As Nate said, 95% of the experiences are positive. But you do have to use common sense when traveling. Half of my trips to India (7-8) were by myself. I never once felt in danger or afraid. India is a beautiful country. Thank you for sharing that beauty with the rest of the world!

Nothing's wrong with pointing out the negatives. I think the people who complain are showing their jealousy and lack of understanding about travel. Just like the rest of life, you can't control everything. It doesn't mean you're not grateful. But, it's important to be realistic. Going to different countries is challenging, and sometimes difficult.
Nubianette, that's true. Sometimes it is difficult to travel overseas. No getting around it. Also, it's not just us as Westerners going overseas, but others coming to the USA or Canada, or European countries, either as tourists or as immigrants. When the food, language, customs, etc., are different, it's a challenge.

This video might be one of my favorites, to be honest. First, the editing was beautiful, as usual. That fire ceremony looks like it was an incredible thing to witness. I would take great notice of what they say positive and negatively. I know they like to be positive and many times it is due to the fact that they do not want to be insulting to someone’s culture.

Hi Kara and Nate, As a fellow Indian it really makes me miserable and my head bows down in shame thinking about what the couple you met in the hotel lobby went through. There aren't any excuses that we can make, and women's (and everyone's) safety should be our utmost priority. That been said we are really really shaping a new India and most of India's youth are on a really productive path, and we have only love and respect for everyone. It still hurts me, but I promise you that we will together work hard and make India the best experience a traveller can have, and the only worries a traveller will have is to cancel their return flights because they'll wanna stay for longer. Born and raised up in India. I would not play Holi with strangers or go near them. You will be touched, groped by them on the name of festival or fun. Also some people do not use good quality color and chances are you would damage your skin with skin reaction or allergy. For street food: please avoid anything that is not boiled/cooked and has water in it (lassi, chutney, sugarcane juice with ice etc). Stay safe, love you guys and your videos.

i live in india.So i would advice tourist who want to celebrate holi to celebrate it in private celebration or in metro cities were it is relatable safer. As a local we also don't just go about to celebrate it on roads just like that. We usually have friends or neighbors and family to celebrate with. In smaller cities holi scenerio is bullying more than celebration. People drink on holi in metros too but the scenerio is not bad as u described
Arvind Gupta not at all, this is the 71st country they have visited which includes the Middle-east and Africa. they have never given a negative impression of any country until now. I have followed their vlogs since they started and they are not the type of people to make things up for views.

Kara and Nate - this was one of my favorite vlogs so far. I love that you can show all aspects of a place instead of just the good parts. Don't be afraid to be honest with us. Life isn't only joy - it's understandable that you'd have good travel days and bad, and that each place would come with the same dichotomy.
I appreciate you guys always including both positive and negative aspects of the places you visit in your vlogs. Setting expectations is so important and I'd hate to go somewhere thinking it would all be peaches and roses if that wasn't the case and wind up disappointed, but if I know what I'm getting into, I'm much more likely to be interested. Although, of course, I enjoy how upbeat and fun your channel is in general, I'm really grateful that you show the reality of it too. Also, now I know that Holi is probably not for me, I was thinking even on the first day that the crowds where you were would be dense enough to make me panicky, let alone when you were in the temple! Looks like a blast though.
Holi parties happen at almost all 5 star properties across all metros. Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore. These places are safer. The roads tend to get filled with the urchins and the unsavoury people who you wouldn't want to meet. Especially in certain states which are notorious for their lawlessness. So it's EXTREMELY CRUCIAL that you do your homework about the property you're staying at, the locality, city and state to ensure your safety. I'm Indian and I love my country but there are problems which we can't ignore. I want all tourists to have great experiences here, so it's important you guys visit the right places.

I celebrated Holi 2018 in Rishikesh and felt pretty safe being outside. Myself and a friend were traveling as two female travelers so were a little anxious about how Holi would be. We met a group of girls at the hostel we were staying at who spent Holi with us. We all bathed in the Ganges afterwards which was such an amazing experience (its much cleaner than in Varanasi)

My friend and I did Holi in Nepal and had an amazing time. We stayed in Pokhara and being at lakeside was super safe and everyone was very friendly especially as we were two 19 year old English girls. It was a beautiful place to celebrate the main festival is celebrated at the lake and everyone walks up and down covering each other with colour and dancing in the streets. Would definitely go again!! Holi is celebrated just as much here as in India but it’s a lot safer and less extreme.

There is nothing wrong with talking about the not so good stuff actually it's good because others then can be prepared so y doing this you are doing a great service. Things happen in our world which we cannot change but there is always the people the locals that have hearts of gold and generally care for others. We have had Bangkok Belly x 2 and Hawaiian Belly I think sometimes it the luck of the game stay safe and when you are covering large areas you should put in a few days of real rest please. I'm sorry to see you got a bout of the dreaded Delhi Belly. I was fortunate enough to travel through Bangladesh and India for 6 weeks, eating local food and even once drank well water, without any problems. I must have been very lucky. I've since read, by eating curd along with any curry dishes, this might neutralise any bugs in your system. This might have protected me during my travels. Another fascinating video, guys.

I went to India on an exchange programme last year for two months and also got sick. Exact same symptoms as Nate :( My host family mom was a doctor in India, and she said it's the street food and the water used to clean pots in restaurants/hole-in-the-walls that causes those symptoms. It really makes you appreciate your health! I was there for Diwali and still have such good memories from it! Holi is definitely on my next thing to do! You guys really inspire me to travel more! I hope you enjoyed India and learnt a lot (like I did!) and enjoy Myanmar x
There is negative for the "sport" of being negative and then there is negative in the form of constructive concern; this video is the latter. Kara and Nate have had one experience on one celebration in a country of 1 billion plus people which I write for context, not criticism. Excellent work.
I have been going back to watch all of your videos while I am at work. I absolutely love seeing the older videos and seeing how all these other countries and cultures live day to day
its actually not safe for women to go out on the streets on the day of holi. most of the people are intoxicated with booze and bhaang and they get very physical and rowdy. But this is not the case in every state in India. There are lots of places where it is very safe and women do go out and play holi, such is not the case in Varanasi. It is always advisable to go to private holi parties and enjoy there...
I can totally appreciate this video. Its so important to get a well rounded understanding of the reality of traveling. Without this video I would have kept thinking Holi was ONLY what I saw in videos- a fun, safe, colorful festival. But there are 2 sides to every coin. Thank you for your honesty.

Even we local people go out to only those places which is well known to us .Since most of the people are over drunk , this may result to something which no one wants to happen !!
You must be safe in India. It might look like the men are being friendly when they try to take selfies and hug and touch you but its not innocent as it feels. They have ulterior motives and are trying to take advantage. Be safe as a girl.

I am very pleased you are telling us about the not-perfect side and how it gets to you. That is as important part of travel as the sights, sounds, smells, people, and places. Travel is all the small things, the reactions of other... doesn't matter if you showed similar before it is still part of the experience you are sharing with us.

I never understand why Varanasi is a tourist attraction - it's dirty, polluted and underdeveloped. If you want to see the Ganges or get spiritual, try Rishikesh or the many other ashrams present in the south.

The best part of traveling the world is experiencing great cultures, eating great food and connecting with locals. With traveling, it does take a toll on body and mind. Always remember to take it slow at times, hydrate and have a good balance in vegetables and protein. I mentioned the bad side of holi privately to you about your friend , CupofTJ and her friend that encounter a bad incident during Holi. Men was surrounding one of the girls and got bit too close. With travel, it’s easy to get lost in any beauty of a city. But always remember to be smart and always trust your gut feeling and in the mist of bad things, there are still some good people that always warns us of harms way and scams. Beautiful blog imo, informative and respectful of culture , traditions and life along the Ganges river.

This was not a good video about India, this is absolutely the worst country out of the 71 they have ever visited. They met a recent victim of rape, how are you telling them to have a wonderful time? Furthermore you can tell that Kara is being harassed she always has more color on her than Nate or any other Indian around her, and creepy random guys asking her for a selfie and putting their arms around her.
Tan first of all, it is made pretty clear in the video that the lady wasn’t raped, and second, they are just showing the reality in that part of the world during a holiday. This does not make the video terrible or anything, it just shows how different the culture is over there. Granted, this is probably not an aspect of life in India that natives want foreigners to talk about, but this problem seems to be prevalent in that country, people have to be aware this is going on.

I am telling him how bad and backwards India is and asking him how delusional he is to think they are having a wonderful experience at this point. Seeing a girl sobbing after being attacked by a group of men is horrifying. The way these men use a selfie as an excuse to put their arms around Kara is also just creepy. I also noticed she had more color put on her than other Indians and Nate, I'm guessing because its a physical action. They want to act positive because they are vloggers and their subscriptions and views depend on it, which is why tjis video is packaged in the most positive light possible. At one point in this video Nate said they wanted to take a selfie only with Kara always and at another point he said he can't complain about the powder giving him congestion because it is no where close to what kara is getting.

A temperature of 103 is dangerously high. Waiting it out was not a good idea. You two got lucky that nothing serious happened as a result. The Ganges river is soo polluted. I wouldn't have even chosen a boat ride especially on such a little row boat. Make your health a priority when you travel. Stay safe!

We aren't brave enough to do India independently so we are going with a small group. I have picked up that you are a couple with a strong faith. Carol, dividing the answer in two parts. If you go to Punjab, then you’ll be in the northern part of the country only. But then if you have a friend there, then it is an awesome idea. Punjabis (residents of Punjab) are known to be great hosts and even greater friends. Rest assured you’ll have the nicest time there and yeah a lot lot and lots of Punjabi food, which is yum, but don’t count calories 😃.

Keep it real! The good, the bad, the great, the not-so-great is what makes me watch Vlogs in general. I have unfollowed any that are always happy and perfect. Life isn't ALWAYS perfect and neither is full-time travel. Real is best. I would rather you admit that some of the dives you guys stay in are not great. One time recently Kara said "and our hotel is great!" when clearly it was a dump (or would be a dump in the US!) Then Nate said "well, it's okay" or something to that effect. Just stay REAL!

It's simple, you guys are visiting the most crowded places to celebrate the festival which is mainly for Masses, My advice is to get to West India or south India where it is less crowded or much better would going to hill stations like Kullu, Manali,Rishikesh etc where it is safe and also you get to experience the culture PS Even Indians are afraid to celebrate Holi in Varanasi, so it's not that they harass just the foreigners, they would do the same to Indians (those people are just set in their own pathetic, cruel way ). It's better to avoid those celebrations.

Being an Indian I never enjoy playing Holi with strangers...Holi must be celebrated with friends, colleagues or people whom you know.....for foreigners playing Holi with people in the street is a strict NO....if you do it for adventure do that at your own risk....most people get drunk in the Holi and unpleasant things are highly likely to happen.....so for foreigners my advice would be play Holi only if you find like-minded people, friends in your Hotel or where you are staying otherwise just refrain from participating in it, watch it from a distance, take pictures and enjoy....there are millions of exotic things in India which you can experience and enjoy....so don't be so upset if you don't get a chance to play Holi....your safety is much more important than taking part in a festival.....and if you want to have a completely different experience of Holi then come to Birbhum district of West Bengal in Shantiniketan, the place of Rabindranath Tagore....in my personal opinion here you can get the best Holi experience in entire India....Holi mixed with the celebration of Culture, with Song, dance, drama and lots of things.....and here it is quite safe....
As a seasoned traveler, I love and appreciate your honesty and forwardness about the challenges of travel! All of my family and friends think it's so elegant and perfect, but anyone who's travel an extensive amount knows thats literally not possible! I feel you Kara!!! While I wasn't there during Holi, I was SO sick (from what I assume was my previous destination in India) while in Varanasi and pushed through for the first day but was bed ridden for the rest. Not sure if my friends and family just told me this to make me feel better, but they said the smells in that city over the other 7 cities we traveled to in India, were the most challenging in Varanasi--which wouldn't have helped my sickness!

I celebrated Holi in Jaipur a few years ago. The owners of my hotel said the same thing to myself and another young woman I was traveling with. The owner did help us get a taxi to a party hosted by the tourism board so we were able to have a great time while being safe.

Travelers visit Varanasi because, as I understand it, it is one of the most important cities in the Hindu religion. This is similar to the way in which visitors to Rome (Catholic or not) will usually want to see the Vatican.
These two people are not a couple of rubes. They have traveled extensively throughout the world and I'm pretty sure that they knew what to expect in India. Varanasi is a well-known destination for domestic and international tourists due to its religious and historical significance. If there are things that make people uncomfortable there, perhaps they should be addressed and improved rather than ignored.

Barb - There are many travelers who say they love Varanasi - but if that was their first destination in India - they would have hated india forever. Some others travel there first and love it - because they find india exactly how they imagined - like a caricature. Visiting Varanasi on Kara's birthday and on holi was a bad idea. Going from the executive lounge in the airport to the tiny cheap room in chaotic Varanasi - on your birthday must have been such a turn down. Lol. It's a good place, but you need to let it grow on you. The place - Varanasi does have substance.
Very honestly, even for us locals in India, it's safest to celebrate holi with family and friends at/near our homes. That's what most poeople do. There are celebrations in local community halls and grounds in major cities and the safety depends on the kind of crowd. Usually family crowds are safe and will respect you and your boundaries. But groups of men do get drunk and eve-teasing incidents are not very uncommon if you venture out on the roads.
For foreigners coming to India, I would advise to get in touch with local families (amazing if you have a local host) and get the holi experience with the family. That would be the most fun and safest way for moth men and women. As solo/group of female travellers, Holi time is best avoided for your trip to India.
Holi can be fun, but it doesn't take more than a few seconds for the fun to turn into your worst nightmare (as was the case with the couple you met in the lobby). It's sad that many Indians tend to take advantage of women in their drunken state and foreigners usually tend to fall victims because they don't know what exactly to expect.
Holi is a celebration of colours and a very old tradition. Wish every Indian celebrated it with the right spirit. Hats off to you guys for your Vrindavan temple celebration and the sheer positivity you possess at all times. Love watching your vlogs :)

Hmm...I think the eve teasing can happen in North India, 'Adam teasing' and sexual assault are not common at all:)! Remember this is like United nations, on the streets there are rich, poor, educated-not educated, good and the bad all though latter is very small percentage...all at the same place, so you use must the part between your ears:). Walking in a poor neighborhood in India is perhaps safer than such places in a country like USA; lets just say, you should take precaution your take anywhere else in the world. FYI...i have seen the "Adam teasing" of the kind you describe in USA, not in India yet lol. Enjoy travels wherever you are.

Thank you for being honest about your experiences in India. As Nate said, 95% of the experiences are positive. But you do have to use common sense when traveling. Half of my trips to India (7-8) were by myself. I never once felt in danger or afraid. India is a beautiful country. Thank you for sharing that beauty with the rest of the world!

As a fellow Indian it really makes me miserable and my head bows down in shame thinking about what the couple you met in the hotel lobby went through. There aren't any excuses that we can make, and women's (and everyone's) safety should be our utmost priority. That been said we are really really shaping a new India and most of India's youth are on a really productive path, and we have only love and respect for everyone. It still hurts me, but I promise you that we will together work hard and make India the best experience a traveller can have, and the only worries a traveller will have is to cancel their return flights because they'll wanna stay for longer.

Born and raised up in India. I would not play Holi with strangers or go near them. You will be touched, groped by them on the name of festival or fun. Also some people do not use good quality color and chances are you would damage your skin with skin reaction or allergy.
For street food: please avoid anything that is not boiled/cooked and has water in it (lassi, chutney, sugarcane juice with ice etc).

i live in india.So i would advice tourist who want to celebrate holi to celebrate it in private celebration or in metro cities were it is relatable safer. As a local we also don't just go about to celebrate it on roads just like that. We usually have friends or neighbors and family to celebrate with. In smaller cities holi scenerio is bullying more than celebration. People drink on holi in metros too but the scenerio is not bad as u described

I appreciate you guys always including both positive and negative aspects of the places you visit in your vlogs. Setting expectations is so important and I'd hate to go somewhere thinking it would all be peaches and roses if that wasn't the case and wind up disappointed, but if I know what I'm getting into, I'm much more likely to be interested. Although, of course, I enjoy how upbeat and fun your channel is in general, I'm really grateful that you show the reality of it too. Also, now I know that Holi is probably not for me, I was thinking even on the first day that the crowds where you were would be dense enough to make me panicky, let alone when you were in the temple! Looks like a blast though.
Holi parties happen at almost all 5 star properties across all metros. Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore. These places are safer. The roads tend to get filled with the urchins and the unsavoury people who you wouldn't want to meet. Especially in certain states which are notorious for their lawlessness. So it's EXTREMELY CRUCIAL that you do your homework about the property you're staying at, the locality, city and state to ensure your safety. I'm Indian and I love my country but there are problems which we can't ignore. I want all tourists to have great experiences here, so it's important you guys visit the right places.

I celebrated Holi 2018 in Rishikesh and felt pretty safe being outside. Myself and a friend were traveling as two female travelers so were a little anxious about how Holi would be. We met a group of girls at the hostel we were staying at who spent Holi with us. We all bathed in the Ganges afterwards which was such an amazing experience (its much cleaner than in Varanasi)

The best and safest place to celebrate holi is to celebrate in a cosmopolitian city like Mumbai, specifically Bandra and South Mumbai.

My friend and I did Holi in Nepal and had an amazing time. We stayed in Pokhara and being at lakeside was super safe and everyone was very friendly especially as we were two 19 year old English girls. It was a beautiful place to celebrate the main festival is celebrated at the lake and everyone walks up and down covering each other with colour and dancing in the streets. Would definitely go again!! Holi is celebrated just as much here as in India but it’s a lot safer and less extreme.

I'm sorry to see you got a bout of the dreaded Delhi Belly. I was fortunate enough to travel through Bangladesh and India for 6 weeks, eating local food and even once drank well water, without any problems. I must have been very lucky. I've since read, by eating curd along with any curry dishes, this might neutralise any bugs in your system. This might have protected me during my travels. Another fascinating video, guys.

You are entitled to be honest and say how u feel without sounding bad. But I understand that you wanna choose your words carefully cause people go nuts in social media behind the screen and starts disliking you for being honest.
I went to India on an exchange programme last year for two months and also got sick. Exact same symptoms as Nate :( My host family mom was a doctor in India, and she said it's the street food and the water used to clean pots in restaurants/hole-in-the-walls that causes those symptoms. It really makes you appreciate your health! I was there for Diwali and still have such good memories from it! Holi is definitely on my next thing to do! You guys really inspire me to travel more! I hope you enjoyed India and learnt a lot (like I did!) and enjoy Myanmar x

its actually not safe for women to go out on the streets on the day of holi. most of the people are intoxicated with booze and bhaang and they get very physical and rowdy. But this is not the case in every state in India. There are lots of places where it is very safe and women do go out and play holi, such is not the case in Varanasi. It is always advisable to go to private holi parties and enjoy there...
I can totally appreciate this video. Its so important to get a well rounded understanding of the reality of traveling. Without this video I would have kept thinking Holi was ONLY what I saw in videos- a fun, safe, colorful festival. But there are 2 sides to every coin. Thank you for your honesty.

I never understand why Varanasi is a tourist attraction - it's dirty, polluted and underdeveloped. If you want to see the Ganges or get spiritual, try Rishikesh or the many other ashrams present in the south.

The best part of traveling the world is experiencing great cultures, eating great food and connecting with locals. With traveling, it does take a toll on body and mind. Always remember to take it slow at times, hydrate and have a good balance in vegetables and protein. I mentioned the bad side of holi privately to you about your friend , CupofTJ and her friend that encounter a bad incident during Holi. Men was surrounding one of the girls and got bit too close. With travel, it’s easy to get lost in any beauty of a city. But always remember to be smart and always trust your gut feeling and in the mist of bad things, there are still some good people that always warns us of harms way and scams. Beautiful blog imo, informative and respectful of culture , traditions and life along the Ganges river.

This was not a good video about India, this is absolutely the worst country out of the 71 they have ever visited. They met a recent victim of rape, how are you telling them to have a wonderful time? Furthermore you can tell that Kara is being harassed she always has more color on her than Nate or any other Indian around her, and creepy random guys asking her for a selfie and putting their arms around her.
Tan first of all, it is made pretty clear in the video that the lady wasn’t raped, and second, they are just showing the reality in that part of the world during a holiday. This does not make the video terrible or anything, it just shows how different the culture is over there. Granted, this is probably not an aspect of life in India that natives want foreigners to talk about, but this problem seems to be prevalent in that country, people have to be aware this is going on.
Martin C. I know it reflects reality, read my comment again. I am not saying that they should censor any of their vlog or that they are deliberately making India look bad. I am telling him how bad and backwards India is and asking him how delusional he is to think they are having a wonderful experience at this point. Seeing a girl sobbing after being attacked by a group of men is horrifying. The way these men use a selfie as an excuse to put their arms around Kara is also just creepy. I also noticed she had more color put on her than other Indians and Nate, I'm guessing because its a physical action. They want to act positive because they are vloggers and their subscriptions and views depend on it, which is why tjis video is packaged in the most positive light possible. At one point in this video Nate said they wanted to take a selfie only with Kara always and at another point he said he can't complain about the powder giving him congestion because it is no where close to what kara is getting.

It's really sad that some people harassed that girl. Knowing this I feel terrible as an Indian. I wish people stop all the rowdiness and celebrate this festival with joy and harmony. A temperature of 103 is dangerously high. Waiting it out was not a good idea. You two got lucky that nothing serious happened as a result. The Ganges river is soo polluted. I wouldn't have even chosen a boat ride especially on such a little row boat. Make your health a priority when you travel. Stay safe!

We have booked a trip to India in November and Varanasi is one of our destinations - so much more excited after seeing your Vlog. We aren't brave enough to do India independently so we are going with a small group.

I'm trying to decide if we will head south to Goa and Kerala area. Any thoughts or recommendations? I have many friends from the Punjab région so that direction is also a possibility. Carol, dividing the answer in two parts. If you go to Punjab, then you’ll be in the northern part of the country only. But then if you have a friend there, then it is an awesome idea. Punjabis (residents of Punjab) are known to be great hosts and even greater friends. Rest assured you’ll have the nicest time there and yeah a lot lot and lots of Punjabi food, which is yum, but don’t count calories 😃.
I love your vlogs so much for a lot of reasons, but the main one is that you capture life. It's so beautiful being able to see all kinds of different people, traditions, and lives being lived. Thank you for bringing this to us all.
Keep it real! The good, the bad, the great, the not-so-great is what makes me watch Vlogs in general. I have unfollowed any that are always happy and perfect. Life isn't ALWAYS perfect and neither is full-time travel. Real is best. I would rather you admit that some of the dives you guys stay in are not great. One time recently Kara said "and our hotel is great!" when clearly it was a dump (or would be a dump in the US!) Then Nate said "well, it's okay" or something to that effect. Just stay REAL!

Really sad to hear about two days, but in way its good, your body is rested and stronger....yes you are right about Holi should be celebrated with known family, friends and only close ones.... people go nuts and they are high on weed, so have no idea how beastly they are behaving...please please dont go to streets, even if its major cities... they're many groups eho celebrate holi in a safe manner. But i feeling sad that you had such bad time, here....but that's the best thing about life and travel, everything changes at next station

It's simple, you guys are visiting the most crowded places to celebrate the festival which is mainly for Masses, My advice is to get to West India or south India where it is less crowded or much better would going to hill stations like Kullu, Manali,Rishikesh etc where it is safe and also you get to experience the culture
PS Even Indians are afraid to celebrate Holi in Varanasi, so it's not that they harass just the foreigners, they would do the same to Indians (those people are just set in their own pathetic, cruel way ). It's better to avoid those celebrations.

Being an Indian I never enjoy playing Holi with strangers...Holi must be celebrated with friends, colleagues or people whom you know.....for foreigners playing Holi with people in the street is a strict NO....if you do it for adventure do that at your own risk....most people get drunk in the Holi and unpleasant things are highly likely to happen.....so for foreigners my advice would be play Holi only if you find like-minded people, friends in your Hotel or where you are staying otherwise just refrain from participating in it, watch it from a distance, take pictures and enjoy....there are millions of exotic things in India which you can experience and enjoy....so don't be so upset if you don't get a chance to play Holi....your safety is much more important than taking part in a festival.....and if you want to have a completely different experience of Holi then come to Birbhum district of West Bengal in Shantiniketan, the place of Rabindranath Tagore....in my personal opinion here you can get the best Holi experience in entire India....Holi mixed with the celebration of Culture, with Song, dance, drama and lots of things.....and here it is quite safe....
As a seasoned traveler, I love and appreciate your honesty and forwardness about the challenges of travel! All of my family and friends think it's so elegant and perfect, but anyone who's travel an extensive amount knows thats literally not possible!
I feel you Kara!!! While I wasn't there during Holi, I was SO sick (from what I assume was my previous destination in India) while in Varanasi and pushed through for the first day but was bed ridden for the rest. Not sure if my friends and family just told me this to make me feel better, but they said the smells in that city over the other 7 cities we traveled to in India, were the most challenging in Varanasi--which wouldn't have helped my sickness!

I celebrated Holi in Jaipur a few years ago. The owners of my hotel said the same thing to myself and another young woman I was traveling with. The owner did help us get a taxi to a party hosted by the tourism board so we were able to have a great time while being safe.
hey nate and kara.. i am from delhi and one of your subscribers. i usually never comment on anyone's vlog., however you guyz have compelled me to mention this. i have been following you, you guyz are wonderful and doing great.. but but.but.. your choices are quite wrong while travelling india. you have not explored delhi really well. vrindavan was fine but hats off. i would not dare to go there during holi and i am an indian😂... you have missed delhi completly. i stay in new delhi and old delhi is overwhelming for me, forget about westerners. you commited all those mistakes which a typical traveller would make. varanasi.. omg.. why why why.. try offbeat places.. ask me anything you want. i would be glad to help. beaches/ mountains/ monuments/ i can help you plan for rest of india. cheers..n tc. love you both ☺️
Travelers visit Varanasi because, as I understand it, it is one of the most important cities in the Hindu religion. This is similar to the way in which visitors to Rome (Catholic or not) will usually want to see the Vatican.
Beauty is subjective. Kara and Nate finds beauty in wherever they visit and they loved it, I see nothing wrong with that.
These two people are not a couple of rubes. They have traveled extensively throughout the world and I'm pretty sure that they knew what to expect in India. Varanasi is a well-known destination for domestic and international tourists due to its religious and historical significance. If there are things that make people uncomfortable there, perhaps they should be addressed and improved rather than ignored.

Barb - There are many travelers who say they love Varanasi - but if that was their first destination in India - they would have hated india forever. Some others travel there first and love it - because they find india exactly how they imagined - like a caricature. Visiting Varanasi on Kara's birthday and on holi was a bad idea. Going from the executive lounge in the airport to the tiny cheap room in chaotic Varanasi - on your birthday must have been such a turn down. Lol. It's a good place, but you need to let it grow on you. The place - Varanasi does have substance.
