I got home from work, feeling crappy, first day of my period, slightly sick, and physically cold from my office. All great reasons to climb into bed. Instead I flicked on your video, and found the motivation to: clear the rest of a cupboard I’ve been working on, vacuum 1/3 of the house, clear the dishwasher and put away hand washed ones too, prep vegetables for for dinner, and clean out the cleaning cloths, tea towels and hand towels (of which we have 3x as much as we need). Each job only took 2-5 mins and in the end, the momentum was going so good, I had to force myself to sit down and have a rest! This morning I woke up with your voice in my head “DO IT ANYWAY”, and got up and did yoga and all sorts of other chores instead of being lazy. Thank you Laura! (Whangarei, New Zealand)
I did it. I created the account I needed to download the tickets for a grad ceremony that were in a message from my sister that I hadnt opened yet. So I opened the message, clicked on the link, created the account, confirmed my tickets (and my willingness to let them search my clear bag. For a graduation ceremony.... But I digress) then returned my sisters message with a thumbs up emoji. Took all of a minute and a half... Put it off for days now. The ceremony is today. In 3 hours. I..
I was sick yesterday. I told myself I was going to do 3 things just now: drink my water, fold and bag my store return, and finish loading the mostly full dishwasher. I did those things, refilled my water bottle, made couscous, scooped the cat box, took out the trash from 2 trash cans and put bags back in them, refilled the rabbit’s water bottle, changed the dog and cat water, emptied one bag from camping, put away a few items I passed by, etc. I then climbed back in bed with no guilt as I went way past my goal. Thank you so, so much!
I got a shelving unit from Lowes, like months ago, in December 2020. It sat in its box for a couple of months because I was afraid my idea with its purpose wouldn’t work. I started to put it together w/out tools, but needed a rubber mallet. So it stood halfway done as I went to dollar tree for the mallet. Got the tool, finished it, and made sure the shelves were level. Now the shelving unit stands with everything from my previous full size bed’s bookcase headboard. A bit later, I got a kitchen cart with a drawer from Target. I use it as a bedside table. At present time, I got a laundry station with a hang bar also from Target. Tomorrow, I hope to put it together. It says tools are included, but I will have my tools’ kit bag by my side just in case I need a “hammer” for those stubborn moments. I’m doing it all without any help. So Procrastination is running behind, Motivation is speeding up, and Decluttering rules the day!!!!!
Your idea of teeny tiny steps is really good for those of us battling depression and anxiety. Your words are really encouraging and helpful. Thank you!
@@HowToGYST Exactly! Yesterday this video helped me get up and do small chores - very small. But in the end, I felt good because I had accomplished a task.
These are good tips, I struggle with executive dysfunction due to anxiety and depression, so getting started on a task is often the hardest thing 😢. I try to tell myself, "look if you do this thing you're going to feel better because it's done, and if you don't you're going to feel more stressed and guilty. You need the dopamine from completing this task! Go get it!"

I paused this video about 3 times and worked on my class planning for graduating college in a timely manner. Your videos get me moving- which is a big deal after a year of depression and loss which had turned me into an unmotivated slug. Now this slug is moving. ;) Love your attitude and channel. I did it, thank you! I took two broken items out to the trash. They broke months ago, but the sense of waste was so strong, I kept procrastinating. I did attempt to fix both of them, but it couldn't be done. Los Angeles, California.
Whah has helped me with this trash is looking at everything as future trash. So I find it easier to let the current trash go to make room for the future trash or the stuff I am keeping.
Yes, I need to hear this. What can one do when your body hurts including ponding headache ? I won't have to do it tomorrow if, I do it today, I am more limited in time tomorrow. I am going to get another Coffee with 3 Ibuprofen.
Excellent advice. The hardest thing to do is just stand up and move. This video is full of excellent advice -- and excellent insight. Some of my mother's patterns got attacked by cats and goats. She brought them over to me to see if anything could be done. Though it was only a large present bag full of unorganized pattern paper -- I procrastinated for months. Finally, I got to it late Friday. I finished it up last night. It wasn't the nightmare I thought it would be. You don't have to want to do it, you just have to do it!
Yess! I'm going to do it now! And "it" for me today is to box up the dvds, books, and kitchen items I piled up on the floor during my decluttering session yesterday. They won't be such a dust-collecting eyesore once I get them boxed up since my charity pickup us not coming for another few weeks. Thanks for the motivation!! 😊
"Treat it like an appointment. Why would you treat your dentist better than yourself?" Oooh girl, yes! Thanks for the tough love and real life advice, I absolutely love your voice and am receptive to anything you say ❤
Lol, you killed me at the end with the phone call challenge! I WILL make that one call I need to make today, then I'm out the door to run the errands I don't want to take time out to do! LOVED this video! Your style is amazing. I've been watching you since your channel was teeny tiny. It's been si fun to watch you grow and reach more people with your great advice. Not just that, but your compassion, understanding, and gentle humor is so helpful, too! 💜
I've started implementing the timer method and it is working wonders; just having a finish line has increased my motivation tremendously. Especially for things like digital decluttering which I find both boring and frustrating... but now giving myself 5 minutes to do as much as I can, means that I have made more progress in 5 minutes than possible 5 years. Thank you and many blessings x x x
Yeah I've found that the biggest source of procrastination is often lack of clarity in some capacity. So it's like you were mentioning - thinking of any previous steps, breaking things into smaller steps, etc. Great tips!
I love your videos. I watched this one while cleaning out my van. Still not done, but I feel like I've been productive on an otherwise lazy Sunday. One thing a therapist had me do is set timers so that I focus on a task and then walk away when the timer goes off and do something else like read or watch a show. I tend to get lost in those things and time passes without me realizing it so I have to allow myself only an hour or one show episode, something like that. Helps with my procrastination and to actually focus on the one thing which helps me to get more done in that limited time.
Laura, this is my favorite video you have done. Wonderful motivation and great advice on how to get things off that anti-procrastination list. Loved how you explained about breaking up tasks into smaller steps, and then just beginning. Eye-opener for me!
Thank you for this video, I spend my working week cleaning for others...and then coming home..urghh no.. Well I had my Pfizer jab on Friday (massive sore arm) But because my dad and bro had horrible side effects... I took this week off... And I started with the boxes I had on the floor that I had in put together in one my videos 'donate' & 'dump'... When I created them we were lockdown...well shops be open a few weeks now & with work finding the hours to get them to the dump or charity shop was hard... It it was the first thing I tackled yesterday!!! Then did a deep clean of my bathroom...(filmed for upcoming video) I plan to get walking today and enjoy Nature!!! And go to a local garden centre and buy plants! P.s I watch the video last night so when you said right pause and make that phone or something...I gave the kitchen a quick tidy (a couple plates/bowls that needed going into the dishwasher!

I have been working (playing?) at decluttering for past year. Today am looking at the giant sectional sofa that has been depressing me for quite some time. It is going to local thrift shop this week. 😊😊😊😊
Hi Laura:) What a wonderful tip about "anything needed BEFORE doing a task". I often do this but have never been consciously aware of it. Like, making sure I've eaten, showered and done my me time morning stuff before I dive into a project, makes a WORLD of difference and ensures I stay on track because I'm prepared 😊Now, I'm gonna make sure I'm consciously thinking about this before I start a project. Thank you!

Thanks Laura! This weekend I couldn't bring myself to do more decluttering but I tackled some minor things that put together made a difference on the tidyness of my home. So even if I didn't do a big project I feel that I didn't waste my time and I feel accomplished 😊
Thank you! I am just watching this on 9/20/22... After having 2 strokes in less than 6 months...i am not ready to "throw in the towel"! So, THIS is PERFECT for me 😁❤
Funny thing about timers - My grandmother used to cook according to the time it took to do another task - like, something would be done baking by the time she finished vacuuming the house, or something might be done boiling by the time she finished the ironing... things like that. Somehow our own rhythms may surface from how we approach whatever our tasks are.

They have been perfectly stored, there's at least half left in all of them, and are still good, but for the past 6 months, I cannot find anyone or any organization to take them due to them being opened already or COVID concerns - I've tried my neighborhood groups, swap sites, charities, homeless & domestic violence shelters, churches, senior centers, etc. I want & need to get rid of them (to make more room for the better-for-me, more naturally-based products) but when I see the box with all the bottles, I see many, many dollar signs & still usable & good items... and can't bring myself to throw them away. The money 'wasted' and frustration over not finding anyone or anywhere willing to take them seems to be what's stopping me. Any advice for how I can get over this, or what I can tell myself to finally make pitching them in the trash bin a reality?
I think you have 2 options: box them up and put them out of sight until things re-open so you're not seeing them and tormenting yourself with them every day (but a note in your calendar for a future date so you won't forget them) or yes, you trash them. The money is gone. I'm assuming that if you're willing to donate them, getting money back isn't a concern for you. They're already wasted because nobody's using them. I'd say they've already cost you enough. As soon as they're gone, you'll feel a weight lifted and you can move on. Good luck!
@@HowToGYST Well, that's good to know, because I have *plenty* around this house to tackle.🤣 Thank you for the informative, helpful, and inspiring videos you publish!
Great advice! 4:25 I would call this (natural) consequences rather than punishment. And it goes with the first thing you said about considering whether you really need to do the thing at all: if the consequences aren't bad enough - the stakes aren't high enough - our brains are great at calculating that it's more efficient to not put in effort that we don't really need to. I'm a master procrastinator, but Dr K from healthygamer_gg has some fantastic analysis of why we procrastinate, and I'm finding that a useful starting point. Your tips here address similar issues to what he talks about.
Every night I start the dishwasher and go to bed. Every morning I unload it while coffee brewing. Dishwasher is no longer on the list of dreaded tasks. No more wondering by other family members is it clean or dirty? Yes you can put your glass right in. It is always dirty until I run it tonight.
Laura suggests writing a list and breaking it all down into small steps. Can you do this? Then when you have times when you have five mins to do something, get one ticked off. Maybe think of the too five things you want to do, and focus on those

She's not a fan of the camera, for some reason. 😂
I, probably ALL of us, DO need a kick. Laura, honey, you are wonderful. Thank you! Hugs from the Southern California desert, MK. 🤗❤☀️🌵

Hello 👋 from USA Ohio Cleveland Strongsville
Waving up from Cincy. 😁
These ideas will and are helping. I HATe un-loading the dishwasher and have for years. I don't know why either, but the two min thing might help.
I can't promise it'll make you love the task (it never worked for me 😂) but it does make it easier to get it done when you've got 2 minutes to spare.
=) thank you. =)
Awe, sweet dog... so adorable. =)
Great advice! What kind of dog do you have? He is very cute!
Thanks! An Irish Doodle (Irish setter - poodle mix).
I was going to ask what you used the fennel for! 🤪
Every night I start the dishwasher and go to bed. Every morning I unload it while coffee brewing. Dishwasher is no longer on the list of dreaded tasks. No more wondering by other family members is it clean or dirty? Yes you can put your glass right in. It is always dirty until I run it tonight.
Yey, first! Greetings from Germany!
Guten tag!
We seriously need to meet for a coffee so I can get some more advice from you!
How to do through chronic pain?
She just did a video on this - check the last vid on the channel. 😁
As someone with r.a. ...I declutter one area at a time..for example the top of my fridge, next day a couple of drawers, etc...it adds up slowly...
Laura suggests writing a list and breaking it all down into small steps. Can you do this? Then when you have times when you have five mins to do something, get one ticked off.
Maybe think of the too five things you want to do, and focus on those
the dishwasher always seems like a terrifying endless abyss... until it's emptied within a couple of minutes 😅
"Life it too short to stuff a mushroom."
Ugh, the PHONE CALL...
