As I’m reaching the end of my term as troop SPL, the last thing I wanted to do is honor my scoutmaster of nearly 4 years with this award. I’m just waiting on my unit commissioner, he’s preoccupied with recharter and installation of our new committee chair ;(

@Ethan - As the SPL you need only write a recommendation letter during your term as SPL of the Troop. The application can be submitted with your recommendation letter after your term as SPL is up. Keep asking the committee chair about the status of the application. Keep up the good work. YIS⚜

@@ScouterStan yeah, the unit commissioner said he would take care of it. I’m just waiting for it to be signed off and completed with my written statement, but my unit commissioner said he’s preoccupied.

So if I wanted to become a Scouter where should I begin? I was thinking of just starting with helping out with a fishing merit badge, Hiking or helping out at campouts. Is this realistic? I was just going to go through the Youth Protection Training and submit my app to the Bay Lakes Counsel. Is that a good plan? I should say I do work 2nd shift so I would be unable to attend meetings. I was a Scout many years ago. I think I only made it to 1st class. One last question, are most troops in need of help? There is a Boys Troop about 30 miles from me. Thank you so much for these videos. Your enthusiasm is contagious!

Thank you so much for volunteering to help. Many scouting units in your area are in desperate need of adult leadership. Volunteers must understand that they should consider their available schedule when selecting service positions. A Merit Badge Counselor or other “behind-the-scenes” leadership is critical to the success of any unit. Then there is the larger “Big Picture” of District and Council service. One of my early videos on scout-facing or behind-the-scenes leadership might help you understand some of the requirements to do the job. [ th-cam.com/video/9DHD1zcdCH0/w-d-xo.html ] One of the most important and most overlooked positions is that of Unit Commissioner. Units outnumber Unit Commissioners by almost 32 to 1. I would recommend that you talk with your local district commissioner about a position that would fit your schedule best. Thank you so much for asking your questions here in our community. YIS⚜

You forgot to mention the special position of responsibility patches that go with the knot.

We thought about it, and it made the episode too long. We try to keep the videos less than 10 minutes. We will bring it up in season 5, episode 10, due to air on September 8th this year. Thank you for the suggestion and for being a member of our community here. YIS⚜

I have worked on camp staff for nearly a decade and have worked all the way up to being a program area director. Is there any awards or recognitions for longevity and service as camp staff, or do you think that there should be something that can show that level of involvement in scouting? If there isn't I believe that there is, camp staff is something few scouters ever do and I feel that there should be something to recognize them. Your thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.
    Thank you!

I think that the primary issue is that most camp staff positions are paid and not volunteer. There should be square knots available for professionals and paid staff. Personally, I think that there should not be a separation between paid staff in volunteers in regards to awards. After all, Scouting is a charity and does not pay all that well in comparison to other for-profit businesses. This is just my opinion and I don't believe in separating paid staff from volunteers that have the same common goal in Scouting. YIS⚜

@@ScouterStan I see your point, I do agree that camp staff is not a well position at all, I even volunteered for my first year on camp staff as I was to young for working age in my state. It would be nice if camp staff/volunteers had some kind of square knot or device to proudly display on their uniforms back at their troops/crews and etc. Thanks for your quick response, I will continue to enjoy your channel.

I just joined my old troop as an adult leader to help give back. (I’m an Eagle Scout in college) what can I do to help in my troop and are there any other awards/stuff to earn as an adult?

Wonderful news. Scout units benefit greatly from having young adults staying in a leadership positions. Get all the online and in-person training you can get. Keep your YPT up to date. Try to go on as many of the unit events and meetings as you can. Communicate with the other adult leaders every week. Thank you for taking the time to help America's youth become the leaders of tomorrow. YiS⚜

That means you're still a Tenderfoot. I always ask Tenderfoot Scouts which one?... They look at me strangely and then I point to their feet. It's an old joke, but I'm allowed 'cause I'm old. All kidding aside you keep working at it and do the best you can. YIS⚜
