  • In this video I show you how I replace the rear struts on a 2003 Honda Civic (7th generation). The exact vehicle in this video is a 2003 Honda Civic EX with a manual transmission. 2001-2005 Civics should be similar.
    This was not filmed in high definition, thankfully it was one of my last videos filmed this way.

    Thanks Big Dog50001!!! Just followed this excellent video to put a set of KYB struts in my '02 Civic. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. By far THE best, most informative, straight to the point video here. My old struts were completely shot. Took a quick spin after the install- night and day difference. Front is next, then an alignment.
    Have a good one

    I followed this tutorial and it was helpful. My rear strut was sagging and come to find out dust pieces coming from the bump stop. I’m glad I ordered a new one thanks to you. I do want to say I have a trouble time lineup the mount and spring because it would not go in the holes right. I’m no mechanic, but I did look at the markings Honda put one on the top mount and markings on the spring. I suppose to line them up I guess. Lastly, like everyone is having trouble installing the bottom bolt count me in. Took me the whole day by myself to do it instead of using wood you suggested I used a breaker bar to pry it down from the control arm and I sat myself on the breaker bar giving it some leverage. I’m not a heavy guy by all means. Anyhow I suggest two people to do this job. I also do want to mention that the Honda strut I ordered has a marking on the bottom of “KYB” I guess it’s oem. My old strut didn’t have markings on them so if anyone is ordering struts get kyb instead of ordering it from Honda. Thanks big dog your videos are really helpful. I’m just not to sure to spend all my energy doing the other side of rear strut. Maybe next time.

    Thanks for the jack info, Dave. Saw the brand of jack you are using an Arcan 31/2 ton and goes up to 22 inches lift. I have an Arcan 2 Ton and only extends to say 19 1/2 inches. Maybe it's just me but I can't understand how the assembly can EVER become misaligned (strut head relative to strut bottom). The lower spring collar is welded to the strut, so that the end of the spring is correctly aligned with the strut bottom. Then the spring itself determines the angle at which the head will sit. If you've got the right spring then the head will ALWAYS be at the correct angle relative to the bottom, surely?

    I've gotten that lower bolt out by inserting a long and slightly smaller bolt or punch on the opposite end and hammering it through to push the stuck bolt out.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Be careful, that bolt needs to be clear of the threads for that to work. In many cases, if it is far enough out to be clear of the threads, then it should no longer be rusted to the bushing inside, and you should be able to take it out by hand by taking the tension off the bolt with a bar or piece of wood like I showed in the video.

    • @pktaske8535
      @pktaske8535 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pulling one off today so I'll take a look at what you're talking about. Normally the threads clear with use of a breaker bar if need be.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 20.06 in the video I talk about some things to do. Bottom line, there is no easy way to get them out when they seize. Most shops will cut the bottom ear of strut off, either with a torch or cutting wheel. Some DIYs have had success hosing it down with penetrating oil every day and tapping on the bolt until it finally frees up, but that can take a week or two. Others have had success drilling small holes at bottom ear of strut into the bushing and shooting penetrating oil into holes (this way the oil gets to the bushing that is seized). Here is a video that SMA just did on how fun it can be :th-cam.com/video/EkSWb02eSmA/w-d-xo.html

      Mirik Man Sometimes the ride height can be slightly different, especially using aftermarket parts, but it shouldn't be too far off. Of course, double check your work. Sometimes after a few miles they will settle in also, especially if new springs were installed.

    Pretty sure you can just buy the whole strut assembly. This way you don't mess around with a spring compressor. It can be dangerous. It can KILL you!

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, compressing springs is very dangerous that's why I have that professional spring compressor. There are more aftermarket manufacturers making complete strut assemblies now than when this video was filmed, but many of the cheaper ones use complete junk parts, so I would only use a good brand name. Also, many vehicles owners want original equipment struts and most OEM struts do not come as complete assemblies. Thanks for the comment.
