- I know asking me for requests can be pretty hit and miss, I'm happy to help when I have the song, but kinda feel bad when I don't! Here's one that I was asked for a long time back and never got around to adding until now. I've had it, but have been waiting for a better copy. Got one now! A #57 hit in 1976.
This is the most truthful truckin song I’ve ever heard
been truckin 40 yrs servin yall in America and I thank GOD for that JOHNNY allways kept awake in the ole days when we had to truck day and night.GODs speed to yall
I'm a trucker and I'm gonna tell you exactly like it is
This ain't no job to glamorize the way them singers do it in all their songs
It's hell to be a family man and have to spend your time away from home
You strain your eyes and break your back to try to buy the things your family needs
The you wind up with an ulcer and the pain can drive you crazy when it bleeds
You pull into a truckstop thinkin' that you'll grab a bite to eat
You're lookin' for the restroom cause everybody's body needs relief
There's poems to read on every wall and some of them will make you stop and think
And the germs are thick enough to play ring around the rosey on the sink
You take the T-bone special and it's about as tough as some old shoe
But you wash it down with coffee and wish to God you'd brought a bowl of stew
You order homemade apple pie but the cook don't know the sugar from the salt
You'd like to choke the waitress but somehow you know it ain't the woman's fault
Sleepin' in the bunkhouse ain't exactly like the fancy motel bed
You get a lumpy mattres and a pillow that just barely fits your head
You close your eyes and visualize the guy back home who thinks he's such a hound
You know he lives next door to you and you wonder if his wife is out of town
You push your rig on down the line and fight the heavy traffic upon the road
You reach the destination and there ain't a mother there to help unload
I did my 48 year's, up until 12/18/21. Back In the day this was about all the music we got but more of it.......
To this it's golden.....
Loved this track when I used to pull 26,000 litres of kerosene up and down the U.K.
Perfect description of life on the road. I quit driving trucks at 40 when I realised there was more to life than burning myself out for a firm that didn’t give a crap, endless congestion, crap facilities, stagnant pay etc. I moved abroad and have been retired since the ripe old age of 45.
This and other classic songs brings plenty of good memories back. Thank you!
I'm a 75 year old ex trucker from the UK, this song takes me back to the 60s when not many firms had Fork Lifts and everything was handballed, and some of the stopovers you could be sharing a room with a dozen or more other truckers, boy was I glad when sleeper cabs were introduced. Having said that I really loved my life on the road.
Thanks & Regards from the UK

Damn, why is Johnny's stuff so hard to find? He was a world class singer!
wms229 I've never heard of Jhonny before now 3/26/18
Because phoney modern country wannabe artists and music industry corporates murdered country music tradition on Music Row. That's why you don't hear it on radio and hear it on stage. Look for Johnny Russell's music on Amazon and Ebay. Should have some good selections.
thank you soooooooooooo much, ive searched high and low for this track, bless you sir, very underated artist
Really love this song, your performance and the pickers. This is Country at it's best in every way. God bless Johnny. Don Drumm
i also have been looking for this for ages. thank you.
great singer, this message from Argentina
we love him!
simply great
You asked for requests of hard to find songs . I heard a song about 40 years ago that's funny as hell & remember only one line. I think it's called "I married a space cadet". The line I recall is about this guy's wife, She has the lawnmower out "And she's pushin' it round and round, then yells to him It doesn't work". so he goes over and starts it,,,,,,,,,,, and she says " WHAT'S THAT SOUND. probably never hear that song again.
Had many days like this driving OTR, wouldn't trade it for an 8 to 5 job!
