    God i've been waiting for YEARS for a film of this quality and finally it's here. It's magnificent. Direction, production, cinematography, music, acting, story line, all of these coming together... just wonderful. The individual scenes and work involved in creating them... I can't believe it was only filmed in 6 weeks! Can't wait to watch this film again tonight.. then next week.. then next month. Genius. My non-sci-fi-fan wife loved it too!

    it's interesting that Isaac mentions Stanley Kubrick. There have been a lot of sci-fi movies about A.I., but for me, this one confronts the topic in the same eerie, creepy way that 2001: A Space Odyssey did. Garland definitely studied 2001.

    • @lewstone5430

      Not really since expression is a way to communicate (facial expression, body movement expression, verbal expression, etc.). Oscar was simply trying to sound wise and you ate it up!

    • @beatatarian
      @beatatarian ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You don’t understand his point. Expression is “I want to *say* something”. Communication is “I want you to *hear* this”. Everything we say isn’t heard and everything we hear isn’t expressed. That’s where consciousness enters the picture and allows one to recognize the differences through life experience.

    Great movie.. leaves you with some uncertain questions, maybe on purpose...
    A few questions remains:
    1. What was the real role of Kyoko in this story? why does she colaborate with Ava in murdering Nathan? what's in it for her, and how does she communicate with Ava? (Nathan said a couple of times she does not speak nor understand English). And why didn't she use the opportunity to escape as well?
    2. How come Nathan, a genius who built Ava and Kyoko, did not program his robots to not harm him and not use any violence against him? that's really odd.
    3. Why didn't Ava free Caleb, after murdering Nathan? Was she afraid that Caleb would not let her go and leave? did she hear him at all when he was screeming for help? what was the motive behind this decision?

    • @mihir0980
      @mihir0980 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He was building a machine that could think for itself, with dangerous protective instincts. There was no way he could design her to not harm him and let her think for herself at the same time. And talking about not saving Caleb, I think it's because she, in human standards must be a genius. Perfected. The definition of perfection here is definitely selfishness. Ever wonder why Nathan said the model after this would be better? He clearly knew she was dangerous.

    • @mihir0980
      @mihir0980 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ofri K I guess most of it still remains a mystery but maybe Kyoko was programmed to behave a certain way, still having a small ability to think for herself(as it's necessary for her to function) and Ava tried to alter some part of her. That kind of seems open to interpretation.

    . Spoilers .great move.....
    A young programmer is selected to test a new A.I in the shape of a beautiful android woman. It turns out the reclusive designer/owner of the android is also an android all long and the real test is to see if brendan gleeson can spot that Nathan the reclusive owner/designer is also just an aritificial constuct. When Nathan reveals he is an android , Gleeson is shocked, but then Nathan tells him that he himself is also an android, and shows him a room of 10 others identical,just like Gleeson, all androids, he turns gleeson off using a remote control and drags him back into a storage room.....Roll credits...one more scene,,,,Nathan comes back on screen facing the audience.. He asks ..."Are you sure you are not an Artificial Construct too?"

    Spoiler Alert:
    I think the movie is fantastic but I also think its made in a specific way in order to have a story. isac is made to look like the evil one (esp when they show him building and destroying his robots - taking them apart with showing emotion) but in reality he acts normal in this respect. a robot is a robot. we are made to sympathise with the ginger dude and also made to beleive that the robot is a conscious being. the gigner dude probably knows better than us laymem in computing that this Ai is nothing but a programmed robot but he falls in love with it. I dont think this would happen in real life. at the end hes willing to escape with her and get rid of isac in a terrible way. I dont think a programmer would be so in love with a robot that he would kill for them. thats the part thats far fetched..

    • @GuyMcRae
      @GuyMcRae 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nathan (Oscar Isaac) isn't just shown building and destroying his robots without emotion, he's also shown to have a sadomasochistic relationship with them. Given that he as a character is at least unsure as to whether his creations are sentient, this is definitely reprehensible and sociopathic behavior.
      And as for Caleb knowing that Ava is "nothing but a programmed robot" as you say, one of the main points of the movie is that that would not remove the possibility of her being conscious. He believes she is, and his belief is justified - he just wasn't justified in believing he could trust her. I think the film illustrates all of this convincingly.

    • @aibel99
      @aibel99 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GuyMcRae good god, this comment of mine was made 6 years ago. Forgive me as I was young and naive.
      I do agree with what you say my Guy.
      I would like to add that both of these guys tried too hard to create conscience without understanding it in humans first. Were still debating what the hell it even is and whether animals have it and these guys were giving it to female robots and having sex with them. Not a good scientific formula when you let your penis do the thinking hahaha

    • @GuyMcRae
      @GuyMcRae 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aibel99 No worries, mate.
      And yeah, it’s hard for me to believe that we’ll be able to create a sentient AI before we properly understand our own consciousness. Also, I think the most solid proof of something really being conscious is if it commits intentional self-harm and/or suicide - there is nothing more against the programming of a living thing than that. I’m surprised they didn’t delve into that in the film to be honest.

    Yeah I don't think his recluse attitude is just from being incredibly science smart. He doesn't exhibit a detachment from people as if he is not emotionally aware of others (aka when we think of geniuses that show autistic like social attachment). I get more of a read that he is recluse and cold because he is entitled and is determined to be in control. From turning living beings into voiceless sex slaves to playing with celebs emotions to get what he wants.

    Also would have been nice to hear more about Eva from Alicia. Like why is Alicia even invited if the posted vid is just going to be Oscar speaking his philosophical views? I'm not saying I don't want him to share his thoughts too but the dynamic is weirdly reminiscent of the film in that he is just waiting to talk more about himself and what he thinks, and when he speaks he is lecturing "the artist this, the artist that" while Alicia is speaking from personal experience "for myself this is true". Maybe I am just projecting and of course there was more of an interview than this so unfortunately we don't get to see how else their dynamic worked out when interviewing, but from this clip he looks super mansplainy.

    • @Beth___-
      @Beth___- ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t think this is mansplaining because that would mean he had to be invalidating her experiences by telling her and everyone else how she should feel. Oscar was just really excited about the whole premise of the movie and it shows, so was Alicia. They have thoughts and want to express them, only don’t wait enough for the other to finish their sentence 😅
      I do agree that this particular bit is a little one-sided though, maybe other bits show more of Alicia’s thoughts on this.
