  • In the far north east of the English Lake District lies Carrock Fell, one of Alfred Wainwright's favourite fells of the area. Not content with this, Neil embarks on an epic circular walk, taking in another three Wainwrights: High Pike, Knott and Great Calva, before meeting a few local residents.

Hi Neil! How many miles is this entire walk, please?

Hello! It’s about 13 miles with around 3,000ft ascent/descent (although a good bit of the mileage is the walk along the road at the end!). Hope that helps.

Hello! Yesterday we did Knott and Great Calva. MAN that downhill bit after Great Calva did us in, not to mention then the scrabbly downhill path just before the footbridge followed by the long walk back to the car. The climb up to Knott via the Grainsgill Beck path was stunning. We are now experts in navigating the boggy muddy squelcher steps. What an adventure! Thanks, Neil!

Thank you! Yes, it’s a long slog back along the road - did you see any red squirrels?!

@@LakeDistrictFilms not during that walk, but we did see one on our way to Souther Fell! No ghost armies though… :)

Thanks for that one, very useful as I have been thinking about doing Gt Calva as a separate walk, but it doesn't look too bad and only makes 2 miles extra. I presume there is plenty of parking around Mosedale?

Thanks! There is some parking in Mosedale, I think, but it's mainly off the roads, rather than a specific car park. This is a decent spot, for the path up Carrock Fell itself: goo.gl/maps/r1Bny424mA6ALFL36

I’m running this tomorrow. I looked at maybe parking at the end of the track where the two rivers meet and going up Brandy Gill, but I think I’ll only be saving about a mile, for a lot of extra effort 🤔

Good morning just wondering where you started the walk me and my friend David have been last 2 days trying to find the parh to it but everything seems to be over grown we went through mosedale village turned left went up that road for a while then came back to mosedale and turned left again went up that road but just couldn't find where you start the walk have you got the postcode to the farm where you started it thanks Jordan from Wigan

No problem - it’s little a way out of Mosedale, heading north. The grid reference for the start should be (54.6948320, -3.0041452) or on Google Maps it’s here: maps.app.goo.gl/JuC2xLCKE5AeUzNV9?g_st=ic
Not been there for a while, so don’t know if it’s become overgrown, but it is/was a proper path, so hopefully it’s clear. Hope that helps!

This might be an original “composition” via the magic of GarageBand loops…

Brilliant film. It’s walk we haven’t done yet, so this was very helpful. An enjoyable watch too ; love your humour “this is definitely steeper than not going uphill” ! 🤣. Thanks for sharing your time and efforts. All the best, Yvette and Mark

Thanks, Yvette and Mark. Hope you have a good day, when you get to it - there are some cracking views across to Skiddaw and the back of Blencathra - well worth the walk.
