I have watched all the videos on the build of that saw mill. That thing is truly awesome. And this big trunk that you are cutting have some beautiful grain in it. My hat is off to you sir fantastic job.
Matthew, that's gotta be at least a 200-year-old oak. Wow. What a rare and exquisite collection of wood from which to make something profound. How special that will be.
We had a white oak directly in front of the house I grew up in. It was about 40-inches across at the base. The city did borings into the trunk in the 1970s and determined it was a sapling at the time George Washington was a boy, and was about 220-240 years old. It was called the Tuttle Oak for the farm it had grown upon and lasted until about 2010 before it died of disease and had to be taken down. You've got a 200-year-old oak there I'm quite confident.
I Googled the Tuttle Oak and discovered it was taken down in 1996 (not 2010)and that the tree did date back to the 1700s as my memory served me. You've got something ancient and rare!
From one of the center slabs, I think top of the 5th slab, approximately 107 years there. Then you could probably add 15-30 for not being the exact center of the tree and how many years it took to grow to that height. You can have two trees be the same diameter, but one easily half the age because of how well watered and fertilized it was or was not. Your ring-counting, using a 37-inch gross diameter and a 140-year-old tree, works out to about 0.26 inches of diameter growth per year. This means each ring should be about 1/8-inch apart, probably not unlikely. Still, based on the Tuttle Oak, I would have thought your tree is in the 200-year-old range. However, if 140 years is accurate, that's still something special. Trees are such an amazing gift from God! I am constantly envious of you all.

I'm sure you've been in similar situations yourself: I was sitting in a local cafe a while ago, a couple of tables from a group I know. One, a retired doctor, was relating an anecdote which was causing great amusement. His laugh was so infectious I found myself laughing out loud along with him. Get yourself a good dust mask and for heaven sakes figure out a better way to handle those heavy slabs. Take it from some one who knows when the back is gone it is gone. Love watching you saw slabs, Matt. I made my final comment last week about destroying your back. Now you've got your head under the last portion of the log while it's supported only by the farm jack, you have your legs in the mill frame while rolling the log. You won't use rollers because a slab could get away, but yet you take all these chances.... A longtime friend of mine died a couple of years ago when a pine trunk got loose and crushed his skull. The authorities had to take his wife out of her class at the high school to break the news to her. You have a beautiful wife and sons. A Bobcat or all-terrain forklift is much cheaper than your sons growing up fatherless. I pray you will act more responsibly. I believe you to be smarter than this.

Matt, great job on the sawmill and your videos! My concern is your safety. As a kid, I worked as a sawyer on two sawmills. Both had minimal safety features, and our crews had numerous accidents that were unforeseeable. Bad things happen very fast and very violently. Once, a part of one of the blade guides came off and hit the stick man (operator) in the helmet and chin. He was lucky and only bruised. The other time, the blade hit a hardened steel thing and the whole log spun around the upright posts and sent the stick man to the hospital with two broken femurs. And we did have the log clamped securely. I suggest that you fabricate a protective cage or shield out of 4"x4" steel, surrounded by a strong mesh to stand in while operating your sawmill. You got quite a few really nice slabs out of this log. My favorite is probably the second to last slab on the main log. The variation in the grain was interesting.

I'm thinking of a natural edge BIG coffee table. Knock the bark off, smooth up the raw edges, and sand the top to perfection. If I were closer, I'd be trying to buy one of those slabs! steve
David Wieder I just compiled bills for a herniated disc surgery... grand total = $14k. Matt could build a mighty fine jib crane for much less than that, and have a lot more fun doing it than recovering from back surgery.

I said it once before I love the arch on your trailer. I am going to copy that idea for mine, make it attachable in two places so that I can shift large stuff further up the trailer bed. I put a mounting point for a swinging engine hoist crane but so much I want to move is too heavy for that setup.

Beautiful wood and that mill is truly awesome. It's good to see you trying to use more tools to move the heavy stuff instead of Fred Flintstoning it. Consider buying a portable winch such as a PullzAll to further reduce the wear and tear on your back. You'll be glad you did when you get older.
Matt, when you start feeling better, after your illness, in your spare time, I can see you getting your welder out and fabbing a tower crane. I'm sure you would put it to good use and would probably take you only a fraction of the time it took to build your saw. If you need any more suggestions, just let me know.
Hey Matt, maybe an easy add-on. Harbor Freight's pressure pot spray system could be used to apply your blade lubrication. Mount the spray head just after the operators side bandsaw wheel. Mount a ball valve at the operators station as a spray control.
