Idgaf what race you are, if I come in for a service and you don’t walk and talk with absolute certainty of your skill and what you can achieve AS WELL as your coworkers’ assumptions of your capabilities, I’ll ask for someone else or come in another day to save them the embarrassment. Discrimination is real, yes, and it sucks. But when it comes to putting your trust in another, it’s important that you feel comfortable. I’m not gonna automatically assume every black queen or king knows their shit, and I’m not gonna automatically assume that they barely made it into their profession. It’s all about your comfortability and how they carry themselves as well. Personally, I’m the type to never let a newbie mess with my health. They can stand and watch from a corner but that’s it, no matter if it’s big or small. How we speak shouldn’t determine our character but at the end of the day it does. You never know. People watch and listen while waiting for their appointments, and they remember the little things that they don’t like, or trust..and are quick to not let that doubt enter the room with them as best as they know how. Now, I think she’s amazing, but I probably wouldn’t have let her work on me. I would’ve been polite about it and not bring up personal dislikes or “reasons” other than that as a customer/client, it comes down to your decision and wants. Now, in this day I’m sure we’ve all encountered those “uncle ruckus” type of individuals. We’re not all automatically proud of each other just because we’re black. And we’re not all “black” just because we aren’t white. We all have preferences and it sucks that you experienced that but it definitely won’t be your last. Just keep walking and speaking with confidence and assurance...( not that “period” bullshit, REAL CONFIDENCE in yourself and capabilities), you got this girl!🖤

Omg this is so crazy but I’m a dental assistant and I once had this older black woman as a patient and when I went to the waiting room and called her name I swear JUST like you said... the looked me HEAD TO TOE and did not budge. I looked down at my chart to make sure I had said her name correctly and called her name again. This time she literally sat there for at least 10 seconds before she got out of her seat, looked me dead in the eye and gave me the HARDEST eye roll. The ABSOLUTE rudest patient I had ever encountered. I could not for the life of me understand why she had acted that way toward me until I was much older and realized sometimes your worst enemy can be someone that looks exactly like you. But I still love and support all black people. I just realize now that all skinfolk ain’t kinfolk. God bless you girl and keep doing you.

I've experienced this too at my current job. I work at a career center, and I've watched several customers refuse my help or assume that I'm unqualified for my position. One black girl couldn't perform a simple task on the computer but refused my help when I offered to assist her. She waited for my white coworker to return from her lunch break. I wanted to tell her, "Well if you would get off your a** and get educated yourself instead of sitting in that chair applying for food stamps, then maybe you'd realize that there are plenty of beautiful black women out here who are educated professionals"

This has happened to me as a nurse and it was another black woman and her black family. It was so bad I almost cried at work. I felt so bad because I legit treated that woman like I would treat my own family. Some of the white nurses were being kinda disrespectful towards the patient's family (the family was always so loud in the room and they were not complying with the hospital's visitation policies). The patient and her family were also "racist" towards my hispanic co-worker so they asked me to go take care of her since I was black. They thought it would help but hell no! Omg!! I’m in dental Hygiene school in California (I’m originally from Texas) . I have had such a horrible time in School Being the only magical black girl in the entire program.. I have gotten “snooty black bitch” sticky notes placed on my car I’ve even had teachers to throw my papers at me. Even when recruiting patients there was one of the many who looked me up and down and said “oh they are letting y’all clean teeth now”.. and the patients have treated me horrible I have one patient rolling his eyes at me acting like he didn’t even want me touching him when I was taking his x-rays.. i’ve been trying to become a hygienist for a long time and now I’m here I sometimes question myself or if I chose the right field.. it’s hurtful extremely hurtful especially when you give it your all and you’re actually good at what you do.. I appreciate your video I’ve been following you for a long time
I’m in my last month of completing Dental hygiene school and I’m so scared because of the way I’ve been treated by classmates and teachers and the patients..

As a white female dentist who started out in hygiene that has my own solo practice, I was horrified by the way your boss handled this. I was also extremely surprised, no shocked, that the patient was black. I had no idea black people discriminated against their own race. The dentist should have said "I'm sorry but we do not allow discrimination here. I am sorry but you will have to go elsewhere." There would not have been a 5 minute discussion with the patient. It would have taken me 30 seconds to say goodbye to that patient. The dentist should have had your back and you are right, if she doesn't have your back now, she never will. You were right to leave. ... I can understand that patients have favorite hygienists just like hairdressers. That is completely different so future hygienists, be prepared for that anywhere there are multiple hygienists that patients will prefer one hygienist over another.........Another point I need to make is your saying that there is "discrimination in healthcare".... No, there is discrimination everywhere. It is not limited to your situation, to dentistry, or to healthcare............How are you going to handle future interviews? Are you going to bring this topic up and ask how the dentist will handle it? I think it would be a good idea to let the hiring person know up front that you need to be in an office that is supportive of their employees.........There is nothing anyone can do about patients like this. It is how the boss handled the situation that makes the difference. I am very sorry you experienced this. This situation would have never happened in my office.

I’ve heard of black people being racist to their own but never thought it was true. This is crazy. Im so sorry you had to go through this. If I was the doctor I would have asked the patient to leave cause we don’t do that here.

I am a black male working in nursing in NC. I had to file two discrimination case against my employer in the last year. Thank God for the EEOC, they don't want us to work and then complain we are lazy when we live off the government. Racism is so real in health care. I hate the medical field bc of this. It starts in the schools

Yes this is very common in the south especially from older black patients. I’m a nurse & I have been in the same situation. So sad

As a dental assistant who is majoring in pre-dentistry at the moment. This makes me so upset! I’m glad you uploaded this because it reminded me that I will at some point face racism even as a provider. So glad you knew your worth. A dental practice who allows their staff and providers to go through racism is not worthy of meeting anyones needs.

You are a beautiful woman!! 26 years in the Dental field. So many things happen in the Dental field that is like WTF just happened. Just press on! Never let anyone bring you down. Bless and Release!!! The Doctor should have had your back. They are so used to pleasing patients no matter what craziness they want. I am glad you posted this! We will definitely discuss this at our office.

Sis I totally agree with everything you said I to was in a similar situation where the patient told me that any black people that don’t support our previous president should be hung. My doctor reacted the same as yours and did not speak up for me as well. I was hurt but this is literally how the world has and still is. I listened to an interview with cicely Tyson and gayle king and she spoke on this so well. She will be greatly missed for sure! But one thing for sure is I’m tired of my skin color being reasons for people to think that we are criminals or beneath them, uneducated etc.

I’m a black girl in the medical field and my degrees speak for themselves but if you can’t support me by letting me showcase my skills or allow patients/other doctors to talk down to me because of the color of my skin that person has some work to do within themselves! I’m proud of you for standing up for yourself ! ❤️

The doctor should have had your back and asked the woman to leave, and for the patient to be another black woman discriminating against you was ridiculous. It’s ok for a patient to discriminate against you, but not ok for the patient to be checked on it? I love being helped by black health care professionals. Very happy you resigned and I hope the doctor learns from this.
