  • Have you ever considered the impact that regular bodyboarding or surfing can have on your ears? Exostosis or Surfers Ear can ruin your surfing and give you long term issues.
It's common for bodyboarders to go out and enjoy the ocean without really giving too much thought about ear protection. Although this might seem fine in the short term, the chances are that problems may begin a few years down the line.
In today's video, Rob Barber from Bodyboard Holidays takes you through the various ways you can protect and shield your ears from the constant attack of salt water and help stop surfers ear during bodyboarding.
    ● Issues Caused - Repeated exposure to cold water or wind can cause permanent damage to your inner ear, this is called exostoses. More commonly known as ‘surfer’s ear’, it is a condition in which your ear canal bone begins to develop small growths. If left untreated or ignored, you could find that your hearing becomes partially or fully blocked and would require surgery to repair it.
Luckily this is preventable and taking precautionary measures is something we would definitely recommend. From home made DIY ear plugs, to professionally made custom ones - this video explains how you can best protect your ears on any budget.
    ● Blu Tack - You probably won’t even have to leave the house to make these. Squeeze a small bit of blu tack into the shape of a mushroom and press the small end into your ear. The tackiness allows it to stick to your ear perfectly, preventing any water from entering. Unfortunately it has the same effect on sound and you will struggle to hear what’s going on around you.
    ● Custom Fit Plugs - Brands such as Surf Plugs, as shown in the video, take an impression of the inside of your ear and create your own uniquely shaped ear plugs. These allow some sound in whilst keeping the water out. Although any water that does happen to get in can stay stuck in your ear for a number of days. Frustrating at best. surfplugs.co.uk/
    ● Surf Mould Pro - Designed by healthcare professionals, we have been trialling these for a while now and are super impressed! Again, these are custom shaped to your ear but they are more flexible than other plugs on the market, making them much comfier to wear over longer periods. What’s more, they contain an internal hydrophobic membrane which means you don’t have to sacrifice your hearing at all. We can’t recommend these enough! www.surfmouldp...
The earlier you begin to use ear plugs, the better chance you have of avoiding surfer’s ear. We strongly recommend investing in a decent pair of plugs so you can safely enjoy those waves for longer.

Ear protection is as important as a wetsuit. Thanks for making this video to let others know. I use "Surf Ears (3)" which came with different sized options to make the best fit. They also allow good hearing while keeping water out.

I wear a Gath & duct tape the holes up , works a treat stopping wind.

My Gath helmet broke the nose of a surfboard - saved me from a cracked skull. I wouldn't be without it!

I use Mack’s ear plugs they are cheap and come In a set of 4 plugs. They are small purple pine tree shaped plugs and they work great. Sometimes during a big wipeout you might lose one but for the most part they stay in and protect you from water going in your ears. Great advice!

Have tried them all and the only long term one that works is first clean the oily surface of your ear then use blue tak thats it!! The others will after awhile let water in. I've put the op off for 15 years so far :)

Yeh we have used blue-tak in the past. The operation isn't great but makes hell of a difference. There's a new technique available now called micro-filling which is available in the UK. One of our staff have had it done.

18 years ago i had both my ears done, but one year apart, and even though the operation is pretty straight forward, and painless, the time out of the water pre op and post op is frustrating to say the least. Try 6 weeks oit of the water pre op and 6 to 8 weeks post op. Its a killer when you live to surf. Now my surfers ear is back and my surgeon says my canals are 99% blocked. Operation on one ear in 3 weeks, but no pre op crap. But theres no getting around post op. My surgeon says 8 weeks. Bugger😢. But im now wearing Surfers Ears, and they are fantastic.

Insert a small piece of cotton in each ear. Seal it with Vaseline. I have been doing this for decades and water has never gotten in.

Do the surf mould pros loose any sound once they're wet? I have tried surf ear 3.0 and the second you go under your first wave its the same as any ear plug that you cant hear with

Just had this surgery 5 days ago. Ringing in that ear is now really intense. Has anyone else had this ringing post-op? If so, how long did it last?

    Why not wear a hood?

    • @bodyboard_holidays
      @bodyboard_holidays  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You can do that in the winter yes, but we would still recommend using earplugs even when wearing a hood.
