Claude Makélélé arrived at Chelsea in 2003 after three successful seasons at Real Madrid. In his time at the west London club he came to define a position and approach to playing it with such success that his name has become synonymous with the function.
The Makélélé role is, in effect, the deepest lying midfielder of a midfield three in a 4-3-3, or the base of a midfield diamond. While it has largely defensive connotations, the role does in fact serve an attacking purpose as well.

An Important question I have for Tifo Football is because of the situation with Cornavirus should the Premier league season be null and void or should Liverpool be handed the title? You asked if the league should be cancelled or Liverpool given the title. Both of those things should not happen
The league should finish as planned when they they able to play the games.
You can't hand the title to team when all game are not completed and mathematics show they might not win it. Even though that is highly unlikely.
You can't cancel it either. There is no need as there is all the time in the world to finish it. Just means the next season it delayed.

      @123dan165 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@london_james I see so just further postpone it for until further notice once this issue goes away even if it means delaying the next season. If that's the case what should happen to the Euros and the Olympic games should they also be delayed or simply cancelled? Because I have a slight query on the matter of delaying if we are going to delay the bpl and football as a whole how are we going to eventually sort out the schedule for further seasons, will it be permanently changed or will the change only be short term? Because I might be wrong on this but we need to look at the issue of Fatigue of footballers. If the change is only short term will it be a case of football potentially skipping pre-season games? let me know what you think and if you understand what I'm saying.

Makelele was a pure genius in its own style, the archetype of the 'sentinelle' and a great artisan of France great tournament in 2006, always playing smart in the shadow of the other talents around him (Zidane, Vieira, Ribéry, Henry..) It's funny that he started his career at FC Nantes (the club of my heart) playing as a winger, but not surprising that he succeeded as a central midfield, the head coach there at the time was Suaudeau (check this one out), a manager known for movement, playing in one touch, being clever, vision and vista.

To me, Makelele was either born at the perfect timing to represent his position, or at the worst timing be underappreciated. Despite his accolades, Makelele never won the World Cup and Euro with France, missing out on the legendary 1998 team. The player who played his role in 1998 was Petit, who was only 3 years older than him. When he arrived at Real, he was already 27, relatively old for a footballer at the time. Had he been born earlier, not only might he have been with the team to win 2 world cups, but he would have also led the wave of shifting into transition focus football. Had he been born later, he would have arrived at Chelsea younger than 30, and might have been able to achieve more with them, as well as developing a variety of skills familiar to defensive midfielders of today: long passing, ball distribution, air contest.
At the same time, he was able to serve as the anchor to the Galacticos and paving the way for Chelsea. He was the best at his position when it became much more important. As player's work rate increases with better training, counter attacking football, which abuses static defensive scheme and tendency to overcommit by attacking focus teams, and possession football, which dominates the match through constant movements, became more lethal. Makelele became the poster child that period, serving as guidance to a generation of midfielder as to how to operate in defence and transition. Clever positioning, quick passes, forward dribbles, discipline were all great attributes that weren't appreciated when artistical attacking midfielders were celebrated. It's almost ironic that the playstyle he helped elevated by creating space for Real midfielders, he helped killed by controlling those star players with clever defensive plays that disrupting their tempo and threaten their wingbacks.

The Makelele role is also referred to as the regista. The Makelele with a more defensive connotation and the regista with a more attacking connotation because of Pirlo etc. Both are attacking and defending. IMO the most important position on the field when u play a 4-3-3 with 2 advanced midfielders

I find it very funny that it's known as the "Makélélé role" in England, when it had existed for ages already. Makélélé is only the first great example of it that was seen in England. Defensive midfielders of similar characteristics were common in places like Spain, Italy, Brazil or Argentina, while in England the 4-4-2 was king, and they played with two box to box midfielders.

Not really i think. Busquets role was more flexible on offense and less area to cover on defense. Busquets covers mostly on central area, and if the fullback is in the front, the CB would move to the side instead of Busquets. Busquets was also allowed to dribble more to find space and build up attack, but Makelele was not, as Mou instructed him to pass to his nearest teammates over dribbling. Sometimes he passed the ball directly to the front line, but mostly he didn't.
Casemiro was the closest i think, but back then there was a lot more players with his role i think, Gattuso, M. Diarra, Lass Diarra (at Real Madrid) to name a few...

Kante is very different to Makelele. Kante doesn't play as a lone 6 like Makelele, he doesn't have the technical ability to build the play out from the back. He has always been paired with another midfielders who is better at passer(Matic, Jorginho, Drinkwater) and allowed to win the ball/disrupt play(what he is the best at). Modern players like Makelele would be Casemiro or Fernandinho.

This is why I've never considered Kanté to be anywhere near Makelélé's level. Kanté can beat the press sometimes but his passing is way below par. He would be overworked in a typical 4-3-3 where he's at the base of the midfield and that's why Sarri and now Lampard play him in a more advanced role (Sarri probably wanted to replicate Allan). I personally think he's much better in a midfield 2 e.g. the 4-4-2 at Leicester with Drinkwater or the 3-4-3 at Chelsea with Matic.

Kante had a very similar role at Leicester and Chelsea under conte, but sarri and Lampard deployed him differently since jorghino sits in front of the defense now. He's still tasked with defensive duties and tracks back just as well just like back then but now he has the added responsibility of turning with the ball and pushing it forward at times, wether it's via pass or by dribbling ahead. More of a box-to-box mid, but his strength is still in the defensive side, although his passing and ball control/dribbling have improved greatly over the past 2 years. Haven't gotten to watch him play much recently cuz he's been hurt this year alot, but hopefully when the coronavirus goes away, he'll be fully fit.

@@MrLeyr what original role? He played in a two man midfield at Leicester, and was arguably the more energetic of the two. He has never really played as a holding midfielder, in any formation.
Kanté has always advanced farther up the pitch and been more aggressive in terms of his positioning than Makélélé. His original role is the one he plays right now, only with an extra supporting player behind him. People need to drop this false notion that he's a holding midfielder just because he's a world class defender. He's more like Nainggolan or Allan than Makélélé was.

Anyone who mentions Kante here either doesn't watch him play or doesn't understand the Makelele role.
Kante's strength lies in his speed and ability to retain the ball, but his positional awareness has never been his strong suit. That's why he has rarely been played as the last midfielder before the defense, since that role requires him to stop attacks BEFORE they happen. Kante's best role is that of a defensive-minded box-to-box player. Basically, playing slightly higher up where he is free to roam. Putting him in the Makelele role would waste his speed, worsen the attacking prowess of the team as well as weakening them defensively, as Kante wouldn't be able to catch up to attacking players from that far back if he found himself in just a slightly off position, which he does a lot.
And before anyone says "But that's where he's always played before", no. He played as a b2b midfielder alongside Drinkwater in the title-winning Leicester side. Then when he moved to Chelsea, Conte initially put him in the DM/Makelele role, but after a shaky start with several losses, he changed to the 5-2-3 system (or 3-4-3 depending on how you look at the wingbacks) that later ended up winning them the season. This had Kante again playing b2b in a two-man midfield alongside Matic, and occasionally Fabregas. Absolutely not the Makelele role, as this video says, that would leave the other cente-mid completely alone. Since then, Kante has always played as a b2b for Chelsea, but with increasingly offensive duties. What people are really asking for is for Kante to simply become more defensively focused like the good old days again, but he has NEVER played his best football in the Makelele-role.
However, that's not to say Kante doesn't do well as a DM. That's the way he played for France when they won the World Cup. But it's definitely not how you get the best out of him.
