    Nice tutorial. A month ago I set up 2 Asus ac86u routers in a wireless mesh configuration. I had no experience but it was surprisingly easy using the Asus software. The feature that really attracted me was the open vpn capability. (I used proton vpn because they specifically supported this router.) Only the main node needs to be configured for vpn - devices connected to other nodes are also automatically encrypted. Thanks for the excellent overview.

    AiMesh has been great for me so far. I added a Blue Cave router (roughly $50) to my existing Asus router at 2 homes, hard-wired via Cat 6. Performance is great, and setup was so simple. Nice work, Asus.

    superp review and in-depth tour - you have got one more subscriber!
    I have been using 2 Asus.N-routers since 2019, with great success (setup as AP's with Roaming-Assistent, as a primitive, yet stabile "router-mesh").
    I have just ordered 2 AX56U's, for AiMesh, and I love that Asus now goes beyond "simple on-off" + "roaming-assistant SignalHandOff-levels" managment.
    Especially cool, that backhaul can be "auto" or "100% user" selected ...
    This might be the only "mesh" that lets the user select this and actually see that the units is designed for Wired-backhaul.
    Another great feaure, I do see with Asus's "Router-AiMesh Mesh-implementation": Is that one can "actually Setup and Control" - MANUALLY.
    ALL the "dedicated Mesh-systems", seem to be "full-auto" ... controlled by a tiny 5-10'' App-interface (vs. a 30'' PC-screen + keyboard).
    I hope, that Asus has got it right (which seems to be the case) with the AiMesh ... because their pure-Mesh systems, wasn't working stable for me (I have tried AX8 & CD6).
    Which was kinda embarrasing, because I had been using 2 good Asus-routers (N66U & N18U) for 1½ years, that provided a Rock-Solid Wifi-N signal - and then the AX8 + the CD6 couldn't deliver the same! (including the Mesh-systems cumbersome full-auto wait-wait maybe-maybe not, disconnected, power off/on, once-again ... which just isn't good enough).
    So, hands-up for investments in the "Router-AiMesh approach" ... especially combined with the extremely usefull features such as "roaming-assistent handoff-signal-level adjustment (dB-levels)".
    Power-Usage - 24-7 :
    This is also wotrh mentioning. The "smaller new Asus-routers" are quite "power-efficient".
    Example: My new Asus-AX55 uses only 2,3W (without wifi, and with all LAN-ports "connected/powered") - and appr. 4W with Wifi-ON (2,4+5GHz). That is simply "shockingly low".
    I kinda hope the same low-power-usage will be the case, with my ordered AX56 mesh-units.
    Comparison 1: My N66U uses appr 8,5W and my N18U uses appr. 6,5W (with wifi-ON and only 1 LAN-port connected, as AP).
    Comparison 2: All the Mesh-units, I have tested uses from 4-6W ... so, a "not top-tier year-2020 Asus-router" can also compete in-terms of the Electricity-Bill !!!

    Hi Nater. Nice vid. I noticed you're using ethernet over powerline. I've never had good throughput despite trying many different versions of that, yet my house is fairly new.
    What did work is buying an actiontec moca 2.5 adapter from Amazon.
    Those are 100% solid and it supports up to 2.5GG per. I'm not sure if you have coax in the same places or not, but I initially went with powerline due to extremely difficult runs from basement to upper floors.
    Now I have an RT-AC88u ethernet backhauled to an RT-AX88u via Coax. it is SOLID, and it was pre wired in the home to get where I needed it to. I have multiple devices connected via ethernet to take as much load off of the network since I still have 40+ clients connected at all times when it was just the RT-AC88u. It did the job well, however an office space required as much throughput as possible to help out the VPN situation while people are working from home.

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Danny. Yes MoCA seems to be better than EoPl. I do have coax ran to many rooms but its a mix of some for satellite and OTA antenna and the ones i want to use are not the same circuit so i'd need to run new coax (or just ethernet at that point). It's a valid point though and my brother swears by MoCA as well.

      @EvilDeadFan11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NaterTater Yes with good reason. I tried it out last weekend and was floored that, guess what, their claims are every day reality and like ethernet, easily achievable with good cable. Unlike powerline where even under lab conditions, it never gets full speed. Totally understand your situation though.

    • @Placesandspaces35
      @Placesandspaces35 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NaterTater yep Moca is the next best thing to Ethernet. Actiontec runs more on the expensive side but Gocoax is not terribly expensive and has been running solid for me for months now. They will be coming out with a 2.5 gig port with the latest version sometime this year. I think Actiontec already has an adapter with a 2.5 gig port out already for their adapters.

    Glad I got to see this video. Not sure if you'll see this comment, but I have an AX58U and was thinking about getting a router to make a mesh, but wondering if any router will do like your 68u? I was reading some other sites that really geeked out on compatibility. Mine will have to be 100% wireless since I don't want to backhaul through my house and garage. Do you think any Asus router will suffice like the one you are using? It's not even a large area I'm trying to cover, it's just through walls.

    I have two AX-3000s and another AX-56U and none of this has been updated on the web GUI or phone app. I would assume it will roll out soon for the AX side after AC. Hopefully so, as I'd like to use some of these features. I am still waiting on a new home to be built, so I'd like to understand everything before upgrading my current AI Mesh network and moving it to the new house. I plan on swapping the current AX3000 main hub to a new AX5700, and making the 3000s both nodes with the 56U, and adding a 4th node with an AX-55. I plan on adding potentially 3 more AX-55s in the future for a full Mesh of 1 HUB and 6 NODEs. Everything will be Ethernet back hauled, with only 2 of those running on MOCA 2.0 adapters, the rest with actual CAT6. Anyone have any experience with the db and gain settings with something similar? My concern is the nature of this is going to give me excellent coverage, but my neighbors may be seeing my network from a pretty good distance. I'd prefer to not overlap their signals and make things difficult for them. I know likely the channels I will use will not interfere initially being AX, but security is also a concern. I've looked into some signal direction control, but it seems like aluminum foil boards are not ideal, and I'd want coverage in my yard around the house.

    • @NaterTater

      Scott, the idea is to have the main router as the most capable (processor/memory) in your setup. The bigger the mesh the bigger the need for that. Many people use two 68U/R as their aimesh setup and that works fine. So you can just grab another AC68 to play with. @@10449 depending on which Asus router you have a VPN on the router is better. Some Asus routers have VPN Fusion which allows you to specify which devices get VPN usage and which ones do not. So different devices can use different VPN servers in your home network via the router. It also allows VPN usage for devices that cannot download a VPN app (say like a stereo receiver with internet capability). You can also set up Open VPN on some Asus routers so when you are away from home you can have your data encrypted back through your home network. It is s bit cumbersome to set up but i was able to put the Open VPN app on my Nvidia Shield when i travel i can use my router back home as a VPN server to encrypt my data on that device when i am in a hotel etc. AMPLIFI Alien router has a similar feature called Teleport. @@NaterTater I have made similar choices when kids, training, wife, friends and work became more important than tweaking PCs and routers :) BUT, one thing that made me install Merlin was Diversion! It can double your speeds and half your data usage by sinking all your network' clients' adtraffic generated by websites into a 0.0.0.0 IP. It uses a pretty extensive - but gentle enough not to break sites - domain list that you can edit if need arise. So, instead of installing adblockers on your clients (ublock Origin, 1blocker etc) you stop that crap at the network single point level. I run this on an old but trusty single AC56 until the weekend (AX86 quad core baby setup time!) and the performance is acceptable for 3 persons small home. You would be missing out, see www.snbforums.com/threads/diversion-the-router-ad-blocker.48538/ for guide on how to set it up (one time 60min, perhaps a few minutes every year to update the block list if you want to). Too many choices to list, pretty much any Asus AiMesh node would work. Ideally you'd go with a Wifi 6 node and if you are using backhaul you could save money and go with a dual band unit since the 2nd 5GHz band wouldn't be used. RT-AX68U is probably the cheapest.

    What speeds do you get in your AI mesh modes? I connected a Blue Cave to my RT-AX58U wirelessly in the den. The connection is green & listed as good but the speed is lower. Connecting to my router that's in the living room from the den gets me 200+ Mbps but via the Blue Cave as AI mesh node I get < 10Mbps. What makes it worse I tried moving the Blue Cave right beside the AX58U, still low...30-50Mbps & then I tried ethernet backhaul...75Mbps.

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The blue cave is my most troublesome node, it seems only semi-supported by Asus. Being "only" a dual band router it has to use its same 5ghz channel to backhaul as connect with 5ghz devices so that can cause slow downs (up to 1/2 speed). That shouldn't happen via ethernet backhaul (did you confirm it was doing ethernet backhaul on your 85mbps test?). Did you test mutliple wifi devices on the blue cave? Did you try a ethernet connected device on blue cave? Those would help narrow down the issue.

    I’ve having problems with my AiMesh. I have 2 new ASUS AX86s Routers. I use one as my main router on one end of my house….and the other one I use as an AiMesh node on the opposite side of the house. They are connected with an Ethernet cable for Ethernet backhaul. (Not all the time, but many times), my devices will connect to the router even if I’m standing right next to the node. I will turn my device Wi-Fi on/off to refresh the connection and even standing right next to the node, it will connect to my router on the other end of the house. Do you have any why this is happening or have any suggestions on what settings I might need to adjust? Also, when I am on the ASUS GUI and see my devices listed…..the Wi-Fi devices all have a small icon that asks which of the 2 routers I want my device to ‘Bind’ to……well, I don’t want them blinded to either, I just want them to connect to the closest/strongest signal…..but when I click on that little icon, 1 of the 2 routers is ‘already’ selected, so it’s as if I have to choose one or the other….I don’t understand this, and it defeats the whole purpose of why I set up AiMesh in the first place. If you have any suggestions, I’d greatly appreciate it.

      Hey Bud, if you login to the web interface and go to the "Wireless" page at the top there is a "Professional" tab and there is a "Roaming Assistant" setting that you can adjust. That is the signal strength at which your device will switch to another node (if available). You have to do that for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz band (select at the top of that page). What speeds do you get though when connecting to the "wrong" node? What it might be telling you is you dont need a mesh system for good coverage over most of your house.

      @@NaterTater I finally got everything set up like I want it and it works great!
      There's one concern I have however and I haven't been able to find a setting
      for this specifically:
      Is there a way to turn Wi-Fi off for any node separately? My other AC88U is
      located wall in wall to my bed and I'd like to turn it off when I'm asleep and
      back on in the morning.
      I went and pressed the button on the AC88U to turn off the Wi-fi but there's
      no way to turn it back on. Long press, short press - doesn't work.

      @@cipher893 yes, most routers support individual wifi on/off. see 8:19 also I if you are good with SSH commands I am sure there is a way to run a scheduled task on your computer to automatically do it daily.

      @@NaterTater Thanks a lot! Found it finally. It’s strange that this feature
      doesn’t seem to be available on the mobile app though so for now I’ll just
      have to log on through safari on my iPad.
      Thanks a lot for your help! Many other y-tubers never answer questions.

    ok my house is really old and really bad for wifi... so i set up AiMesh. the most annoyint thing ever. been trying to get it work for over 4hours now. the wifi connection between the 2 routers is too weak and it disconnects (the routers are not even that far away from each other. so i try to use ethernet. yay it works fine aand... nope it desides not to use ethernet and uses wireless and gets disconnected in minutes and wont reconnect at all in any way until i restart the whole aimesh prosess and look for the node again.. and force ethernet is not supported by the node.

      im literally almost to the point of selling my asus routers and buying some other brand probably would work better........

      Ethernet backhaul is what you need. I'll bet if you have that poor of wifi signal at any mesh node it wont work.

      @@NaterTater i got it working like a few hours after i commented. (Also it says the node [AX 56U] does not support ethernet backhaul) but i got it working with ethernet and i was almost done then i notice that its using the wrong 5Ghz band (the main router is a tri band with 2 5Ghz) and i tried to make it use the other one for a few minutes and gave up and just made the 2 5Ghz smart connect.badicly duck tapes my problem as im done with my routers rn 😅

      @@NaterTater backhaul standard to 5Ghz and it has some performance limit that if there are 10-15 wifi devices on that AiMesh node, nodes will be randomly disconnected and even the node will be dropping off the AiMesh and reconnect again!! (probably due to the constraint 256MB RAM on AC68U)
      It happens to me for a while until I found out about it!
